The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is the world's oldest non-dam irrigation system that's still in use. It was built around 256 BC, over 2000 years ago. The system has survived earthquakes, wars, and time. To this day, it helps to make Sichuan province the most agriculturally productive province in China. In this video, I breakdown how the Dujiangyan Irrigation system works.

A five week solo journey on a Chinese dirt bike from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province through the Tibetan, Western part of that province and up onto the Tibetan Plateau, entering the corner of Qinghai Province. My goal is the Tibetan town of Yushu. This time, after a long ride from the grasslands of Tagong, I get to the town of Garzi.

Jinli Old Street is one of the oldest shopping streets in Sichuan Province, and it can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms Period, over 1,800 years ago. The street showcases the customs of Xishu and the culture of Shuhan (one of the Three Kingdoms from 221 to 263). Most of the architecture here is of the style of the residences in western Sichuan Province.
Mayhem on Chinese National Day - Motorbike escape from “Golden Week
It’s Chinese National Day! Grab the nearest motorcycle, weave your way through the gigantic traffic jam and head for the hills... better yet, the mountains of West Sichuan!
But you probably should have checked your motorcycle before you tried to climb a 4,500 meter high pass so far from home, or a gas station…
This week the Mayhem crew try to avoid the crowds and traffic of the Chinese National Holiday in Chengdu (Golden Week) by heading deep into the mountains of West Sichuan.
Motorcycles include:
Qingqi qm200 (Known internationally as QLink XF200) - a 200cc Chinese made dirt bike
Shineray X2: a 250cc Chinese dual sport Bike
Yamaha YBR - a Japanese-built 125cc road bike that resembles most of the bikes you see riding around China, but Japanese-made so...much better
Route:
Our route starts in Chengdu, to Qionglai, where we get on a riverside road: the X73, which takes them all the way to LuShan. From LuShan they take the (?) road north into the mountains. After arriving at the 303 (Beautiful Road), they then head east over the 5000 meter mountain pass!
***NOTE*** Mistake in the video! Bao Xiang is actually Bao Xing! (Day 2 location)
If you try this same route, learn from Carl’s mistakes and fill up before you head up the pass!

Southwest China includes Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi provinces and Chongqing municipality. It had long been the Wild, Wild West of China dated back to 221 BC, and people who lived here had long been called as Xinan Yi , literally, southwestern foreigners or barbarians.
The faraway distance to China central inland and the complicated geographic conditions made this mountain-locked corner a remote, underdeveloped region and even nowadays, a less-developed region in China, in the meantime, created a variety of spectacular landscapes and rich, colorful, unique ethnic histories and cultures.
Along the long river of history, traces of the ancient Southern Silk Road & Tea-horse Caravan Road have been disappearing in high mountains and deep valleys, while the Burma Road built in WWII still serves the people...Great changes happened and happens everyday in Southwest China, there is already so much being explored, and still, so much waiting to be explored...
