Thompson Road - Kula, Maui
Starting from the top of Kamaole Road and turning right onto Thompson Road. A beautiful quiet upcountry road in Kula. Distributed by Tubemogul.
scenes from Maui Wine, Ulupalakua (Kula), Maui, Hawaii
These are some views of the Maui Wine store and grounds in Ulupalakua, Maui, Hawaii. This winery is located on the Kula Hy. (No. 37) and is about 25 miles and 45 minutes away from Kahului. We didn't find a whole lot to do here but they do have some interesting trees on the grounds as pictured in this video. Only liked one of their wines and understandably because this is Maui, everything there was very expensive by mainland standards. It is a very nice drive to get here though.
Maui Mountain Biking featuring Boundary Trail UNCUT
This film is an uncut ride down Maui's best descent trail. Boundary trail is within the Pool Poli State Park in Kula, Hawaii. It's a 1,400 vertical foot descent over a 4 mile trail. The first few miles are mostly downhill with the final mile having easy to ride ups and downs.
Riding Boundary trail is an amazing downhill riding experience! The trail is within the Poli Poli State Recreational Park in Kula, Maui, Hawaii. The Boundary trailhead can be found on the right just after the cattle guard a short distance into the dirt road ride. Boundary is a 4 mile long single track that drops over 1,400 vertical feet from beginning to end, though there is more than descending to this trail. The first section is full-on downhill with tight switchbacks, off camber side slopes and wet and dry surface conditions. After that you will have several fairly easy hike-A-bike climbs and a narly but manageable hike-A-bike down and up a rocky ravine. Some fairly easy climbs will also be required. The final 1.5 miles of trail takes you into the misty old growth woods. Short technical climbs sprinkled in with loomy descents are the name of the game.
Overall the ride requires some bike handling and climbing skills to be enjoyed. The trail is not for the beginner (as you'll see in the video).
This video shows a top to bottom UNCUT ride down Boundary Trail. This is presonally my favorite Maui trail!

Kaupo Trail Road Descent, Maui, Hawaii
This is a mountain bike helmet cam video of the Kaupo Trail Road descent on Maui, Hawaii, USA. The road is near the Kaupo Gap on the Haleakala volcano. We start where the hiking trail begins at the top of the road, and we descend to the intersection near the Kaupo Store and then head east towards Kipahulu. There are great views of the Big Island and some glimpses of Kaupo Gap at the top. It's about a 1000 foot vertical drop, and it's quite fast and bumpy. It's an interesting downhill that varies between dirt, gravel, patchwork pavement, and smooth asphalt. The climb to the top is quite doable, and the grade is steady the entire way. There isn't much traffic on this road, but please watch for animals, horses, people, and vehicles if you decide to come down it fast. This one of my favorite short off-road rides when I'm in the Kaupo or Kipahulu area. Don't forget to get a cold beer out of the fridge at the Kaupo Store, sit on the porch and do some whale watching. ISLAND OF INSPIRATION
The island of Hawaii is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined (hence, its nickname, “Big Island”), its sheer size is awe-inspiring. You can travel through all but four of the world’s different climate zones there, ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra. From the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the lush valleys of the Hamakua Coast to the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach, the island of Hawaii is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature. However you decide to experience the island, it is sure to leave you Inspired!
The sun-drenched Kohala Coast sees an annual average rainfall of only nine inches, so soak in the sun and relax on Mauna Lani’s two sandy beaches, explore the Puako Petroglyphs, indulge at local restaurants or recharge at the spa. You’ll discover cultural treasures on the Kohala Coast, too, such as the remarkable Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, the largest restored heiau in Hawaii.
Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection is a luxury resort on the Big Island of Hawaii which is approximately 23 miles north of the Kona International Airport. It’s a 25-minute leisurely drive to the resort. Our concierge can assist you with your ground transportation.
#Hawaii Island, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, spans 4,028 square miles and is the most southern spot in the United States. There is a rich history and culture on the island with plenty of adventure from the mountain tops to the deep blue sea.
Extensive fitness offerings are fun and approachable for all ages. Indoors and outdoor classes such as beach boot camp and stand-up paddleboard yoga are available to provide variety and challenge you.

OPRAH PRIVATE MAUI RANCH ROAD IS VISIBLE FROM OUTER SPACE via google maps
According to Forbes, Oprah Winfrey is worth $2.7 billion. She owns a production company (Harpo Productions), a cable network (OWN), a magazine (O), Oprah.com and the Oprah Radio satellite station. She also owns estates in Montecito, California and Fisher Island, Florida; houses in Lavallette, New Jersey, Douglasville, Georgia and Telluride, Colorado; and assorted properties on the islands of Antigua and Maui. The latter includes 100 acres in Hana, 1,000 acres Upcountry (which boasts a small, terribly exclusive 12-room bed and breakfast) and a four-mile road.
And not just any road, either: Oprah's road is concrete and asphalt 12 feet across. Goodfellow Brothers paved it in December 2010. The road stretches from the water tank at Kealakapu Road near Piilani Highway in Kihei to Keokoa, near Haleakala Highway. It's a road locals have been waiting for 40 years — a potentially golden road that could radically ease traffic congestion in Central Maui.
That is, if the public could use it, which it most certainly cannot. The paved road, drainage swales and detention ponds will be privately maintained, stated a June 2009 Drainage Report on the effects of paving the road prepared by Wayne I. Arakaki Engineer LLC for OW Ranch, LLC, (the initials reportedly stand for Oprah Winfrey) and kept on file with the Maui County Planning Department. This is a private roadway and will not be open to the public.
OW Ranch paid for the road. It wasn't cheap, said OW Ranch agent Hugh Starr when asked how much it cost. He ultimately declined to provide a figure, and officials with both the county Planning Department and Haleakala Ranch said they either didn't know or couldn't provide the number (grading the road did require a $34,520 bond, which county civil engineer Lance Nakamura said represented just a fraction of the grading costs).
According to Starr, the road lies entirely on Haleakala Ranch land, which he said was the road's main user. But he added that OW Ranch and Kamaole Ranch (which is owned by Winfrey's former personal trainer Bob Greene, who is also listed as a manager for OW Ranch) retain access rights to the road that dated back to OW Ranch's original purchase of the 1,000 Upcountry acres from Haleakala Ranch. Starr called the original dirt and gravel road very rocky and dusty as well as dangerous, which the grading permit and accompanying drainage report makes clear.
We will paved [sic] approximately four miles of road 12 feet wide, states the county drainage report. Grades which is [sic] greater than 12 percent will be constructed out of concrete. We will construct drainage swales along the paved road, with plastic liner. All slopes will be graded at a 3:1 [ratio].
Hugh Starr referred to the road as a driveway that makes going in a lot easier, though he added that the road doesn't actually reach any dwellings owned by OW Ranch or Kamaole Ranch. It was an existing ranch utility road, he said. The Department of Water Supply, Maui Electric and Haleakala Ranch all use it.
Rumors about the road have flown about the island for months. During a Jan. 11 Maui Planning Commission hearing on OW Ranch's request to extend a permit for its Silver Cloud bed and breakfast in Kula, Chairman Jonathan Starr (no relation to Hugh) asked OW Ranch agents whether the road existed and if it tied into Winfrey's Silver Cloud bed and breakfast.
Tom Welch, an attorney representing OW Ranch, Kamaole Ranch and Silver Cloud, said the road did not connect to the Upcountry bed and breakfast.
The road is not visible from either Piilani Highway in Kihei or Haleakala Highway in Kula, Hugh Starr said members of the public still find their way to it.
It's hard to monitor the road, Starr said. There's some concern about the general public. It's kind of a double-edged sword because the road is very attractive to skateboards and joggers. We have definite security issues.

Waiakoa and Waiohuli Trail - Maui Trail Running
Spent some time exploring the upper Waiakoa and Waiohuli Trails. I started at the hunter check in station and headed to the lower Waiakoa loop. After over a half a mile the upper Waikoa Trail starts. It is all up-hill switchbacks from pine to pasture then to rocky alpine. The trail is marked with blue flags and I would not recommend running when the clouds roll in. Waiohuli connects to Mamane Trail that connect to the main dirt road. The trail provides great views of the central valley. While on the trail I ran into Tom Armstrong - the maker of the trail and currently working on upgrading it.

Waipoli Road Part 3 of Haleakala to Lavender Farm Maui Hawaii Mountain Biking
Part 3 of 3 videos:Part 3 Waipoli Road
Skyline trail from Haleakala summit to Mamane trail to Waipoli Rd ending at lavender farm.
These are some combined clips of the road to give you an idea of what the ride was like.
So I rode from the summit of Haleakala to the lavender farm on Waipoli Rd today, Sept. 1st, 2013. We went up to wach the sun rise and my wife dropped me off afterwards to ride the Skylline trail. I had done some googling the night before and found Tommy Goggia's post at mauimountaingbiking.com but had never ridden any part of the ride I was about to take.
The ride had 3 distinct sections. The first section was about 4 and a half miles, but it seemed longer, and was an old road with lots of loose rock in the first couple of miles as Tommy points out. The second section was a single track called Mamane which was really pretty fun, but too short lived; only two miles at most. The Mamane dumped out on the dirt road end of Waipoli road where it is a dirt road. Waipoli road turned into pavement, and although I try to stay off the pavement as a general rule as much as possible, this last section was pretty fun. It was a really smooth paved road with barely any traffic. There was a lot of it too. The others posts say about 6 miles and I believe them. Towards the bottom by the lavender farm there were some fairly straight sections where you could really pick up some speed.
All in all, I guess it's a ride that is worth taking just to say you rode a volcano and to get like 7000 feet of downhill in to boot. I think it took me a little over an hour not counting my stops to try to figure out where I was going. I was worried about missing the Mamane trailhead but you don't have to worry about it because it is well marked. I might have missed the .7 mile section of Tommy's post because I don't remember any intersection so I wasn't sure if I should be going back up the Waipoli Rd to the right at the bottom of Mamane or not, but since I was trying to get to the lavender farm it looked like the right way for me. There were other trails there a person could explore that were part of the Poli Poli system. At least one of them was marked okay for bikes.
