Bicycle Touring in Cuba-Renting Bikes in Havana-Part 1
This is a mini-series about bicycle touring in the western region of Cuba. In the span of 7 days, we pedaled from Havana to Viñales, and back to the capitol city, about 350 miles. My friends Dana and Dominic joined the adventure, and together, we leisurely cruised through the beautiful Cuban countryside. In this episode, we get situated in Havana, and prepare for the big ride.

Cuba Havana Bike Tour

Bay Bike Tour in Havana, Cuba
A video of the Bay Tour by Rutabikes ( in Havana, Cuba. The tour starts in Havana and goes around the Havana Bay to Casablanca, Guanabacoa, Regla, and more. The tour gave deeper insights into Cuban culture, history, family life, education, and religion. Eva was my amazing, knowledgeable tour guide. I highly recommend her for a tour around Havana.
The camera was mounted on the handlebar so shots against the light are not ideal.
Havana Cuba - Vedado Bicycle Ride and Travel Guide,
This is a bicycle ride and travel guide through Vedado, in Havana Cuba
After a couple of days exploring Habana Vieja and Centro Habana we decided to taxi across town for dinner to the slightly more upmarket area of Vedado.
This part of the city features the infamous 1930’s Mafia hangout Hotel Nacional, as well as Modernist resorts, large wealthy Art Deco, neoclassical and baroque mansions, plus the occasional brutalist soviet style skyscraper
The next morning we returned to Vedado and visited the Necropolis Cristobal Colon cemetery, which one of the largest in Latin America.
We then took an extended sunset bicycle ride around the city, guided by Eva from Cuba Ruta Bike Tours.
The tour started out in the wealthy suburb of Miramar home to, diplomats, embassies, moneyed foreigners, and high-ranking Cuban officials.
From Miramar we ducked down into the natural park area of Rio Almendares, where we wound alongside the river and through the tropical green forest.
Eventually, we emerged near the large monuments of the Plaza de la Revolucion, dominated by the José Martí Memorial and Che Guevara. It was an ideal place for tourists to get photos next to the flashiest of the vintage cars.
From the Plaza we then took a long loop down through the old streets of Habana Centro, which was the area where we were staying at Casa 1932. We Stopped for a quick visit to an artist area.
Finally we cruised along the Malecon at the waterfront - just as the sun was going down. It was a long but very enjoyable ride, ensuring we would sleep well and be ready for the 5.30am flight to Baracoa - which is at the very far end of Cuba.

Cuba underwent a bicycle revolution in the 1990s during its five year ‘Special Period’. Oil was scarce as a result of tough economic constraints, and throughout those years of austerity, bicycles where introduced as an alternative mode of transport. Thousands of Cubans used bicycles on a regular basis, as pedalling became the norm on the island.
Years later, the transportation crisis subsided and motorised vehicles returned, and the country’s bicycle culture took a hit. Now, new bikes are difficult to come by and parts are not readily available, yet many Cubans still use bicycles daily and, despite the limited resources, a handful of mechanics provide a service to those who rely on their bikes in their everyday lives.
Plenty of cyclists roam the streets of Havana and the rest of Cuba. Ángel, a typical bike riding Habanero, provides a brief insight into Cuban bicycle culture and the importance of bike mechanics in the capital as we come across both riders and repairmen.

A nice trip on the northern coast of Cuba. Starting at the Marina Varadero. Cycling with a rented bike about 500 KM along the Via Blanca to Havanna, continuing on the Carretera Panamericana to Mariel and going finally to the magic rocks and caves of Vinales. Country No. 96 for Chris-on-the-Bike.de
HOW TO TRAVEL IN CUBA: Bus ◼︎Train ◼︎ Caminones ◼︎ Colectivos ◼︎ Cycling
Cuba is a great destination for tourists. It is so interesting for so many reasons, among them its diversity of means of travel. The most common means of travel would be by bus either individual travel or organized travel. Car rental is certainly popular due to its flexibility. Really easy would a taste of Cuba by taking a cruise that stops at three ports of call. For the more adventurous, why not take the challenge of crossing Cuba on camioness or by bicycle touring. Colectivos also an option if you miss a bus or are looking to meet people.Oh yes for shorter distances there is always the horse and carriage that are still a big hit in Cuba.

Cycling Across Cuba-Santiago de Cuba to Havana
Cycling across Cuba at 15mph is the perfect speed to experience this beautiful country. I began the trip in Santiago de Cuba, headed through the steamy Sierra Maestra mountains to Baracoa, then headed west toward Havana, passing through all the major cities. The entire trip was about 850 miles through beautiful Cuban countryside.
