Bike Friendly Cities: Copenhagen
Where better to start our series on Bike Friendly Cities than in Copenhagen - a city with over 215 miles of bike paths that was declared the world's best city for cycling a few years ago?
We talked with everyone who is anyone in the world of cycling, starting with urban mobility expert Mikael Colville-Andersen, who advises cities across the planet and Morten Kabell, head of Copenhagen's Technical and Environmental Administration. We even found the beautiful lady who ferries sperm samples to fertility clinics around Copenhagen on a sperm-shaped cargo-bike.
And of course we could not leave out the friendly wizards from the bike repair shops. For a number of days we researched whether Copenhagen really is paradise on Earth for cyclists. You can find the answer in our report.

Bicycle route The Green Path in Copenhagen, Denmark
Watch me ride the most interesting 3.3 km of the 9 km long dedicated bicycle and pedestrian path called The Green Path (Den Grønne Sti) in Copenhagen, my home town.
This is like a ring road for bicycles, as it follows a former rail line circumventing the city about 3 km from the center. The bicycle route connects the neighbourhoods Valby (West Copenhagen) with Frederiksberg, Nørrebro and Hans Knudsens Plads (North Copenhagen). My ride in this video is from Frederiksberg towards Hans Knudsens Plads.
Enjoy the nice and varied parks along the way - especially the last one, Superkilen (12:10), which is an award-winning park celebrating cultural diversity with design elements from 60 different nations!

Bike City Copenhagen: This Is The Ultimate Bicycle Friendly City
Welcome to Copenhagen, although if you’re a fan of two-wheeled transportation, you’ll probably come to know it as bicycle heaven.
Copenhagen is the city with more bikes than people, at a rate of 5 bikes to 4 people. Many cities in Europe have taken steps to make cycling the dominant form of transportation in cities, but Copenhagen is the gold standard among them.
When polled about why they choose cycling:
29% said that cycling is the cheapest available option to them. This one is a no-brainer. A bike costs way less than a car, is cheaper to service, doesn’t require you to spend money on gas, is easy to store and doesn’t require you to pay for parking, has no licensing/ownership/insurance fees attached and the city is perfectly designed to accommodate them.
56% of people said it’s because it’s the fastest option available. This is because, as mentioned above, Copenhagen is cycling heaven. The streets were designed to accommodate cyclists. There’s plenty of places to park a bike.
Cycling is easy. It takes a couple of seconds to hop on your bike and start moving. It takes just as long to find a spot to put your bike (whereas trying to find a parking space for a car in pretty much every city, including Copenhagen, will fill you with homicidal rage).
Bicycles are small, so even if there’s a lot of them, traffic doesn’t slow you down by much. In a city setting with local speed limits, cars have no advantage in terms of speed.
People who live in car-dominated cities might have a hard time imagining a place where a simple bicycle is the more effective means of getting around, but in Copenhagen, it’s just an every-day thing.

Exploring Copenhagen by Bike - An American Perspective
We had a brief layover in Copenhagen on our way to Eurobike in Germany. It was our first time in Copenhagen so I was just talking through what we were seeing as we rode through the cities infrastructure.
I was really impressed and although we were only here for a brief time the impact on my perspective was quite dramatic. Copenhagen is clearly a setting a trend for other cities to follow.
A journey around Copenhagen's bicycle innovations
This tour shows the latest bicycle innovations in Copenhagen: a wonderful new bridge (the Cycle Snake); the Green Wave, where cyclists going 20 Km/hr get the green light and might never have to stop because green LEDs are built into the road beside the bike lane; or bins inclined at a comfortable angle for cyclist to deposite trash without stopping his journey. The result of that is a 5% increase to 42% share of trips into the city and a lot fewer cars.

Copenhagen just keeps finding new ways to make it easier and more convenient to bike. Recently I had the chance to take a tour with Mikael Colville-Andersen of Copenhagenize and see some of the innovations that have changed the city's streets since I was there four years ago.
First off, if you've seen my 2010 Streetfilm about Copenhagen's bike infrastructure and culture, the busiest bicycle street in the world has changed: The Knippelsbro Bridge now boasts 40,700 riders per day! And speaking of bridges, Copenhagen is building six new crossings exclusively for biking and walking to help its citizens get around.
Last month another cool bridge debuted -- the Cykelslangen (Bicycle Snake). You'll see loads of footage as we traveled back and forth. It is truly a handsome piece of infrastructure. Even going uphill seems pretty easy!
You'll see lots of other things that will make you happy (or angry your city isn't doing more!), including waste baskets angled for cyclists, LED lights that indicate whether riders have to speed up to catch the green wave, and a cool treatment for cobblestone streets that helps make biking easier.

A Walk Up Stroget Street, Copenhagen, Denmark
Strøget is a pedestrian, car free shopping area in Copenhagen, Denmark. This popular tourist attraction in the centre of town is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe at 1.1 km. Located at the centre of the old city of Copenhagen, it has long been one of the most high-profile streets in the city. The pedestrianisation of Strøget in 1962 marked the beginning a major change in the approach of Copenhagen to urban life; following the success of the initiative the city moved to place a much greater emphasis on pedestrian and bicycle access to the city at the expense of cars. This approach has in turn become internationally influential.
The main street is bound on the west by City Hall Square (Danish: Rådhuspladsen), the central town square by Copenhagen City Hall, and on the east by Kongens Nytorv (The King's New Square), another large square at the other end. But the Strøget area is actually a collection of streets that spread out from this central thoroughfare. Components of the pedestrianised network are:
Macron and Danish PM Rasmussen take a bike ride in Copenhagen
French President Emmanuel Macron and Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, a cycling enthusiast, went for a bike ride through the streets of Copenhagen on August 29. The French president is currently on a state visit to Denmark. The Danish capital will be the candidate city for the start of the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021.

Copenhagen-The Most Bicycle-Friendly City in The World [ Denmark ]
In this vlog, I represented Copenhagen the most bicycle-friendly city in the world. Copenhagen has around 220 miles of bike paths and every day almost one million kilometers are cycled by 62% of its citizens. This is the reason why Copenhagen is the most bicycle-friendly city in the world. To many Copenhageners, the bicycle is their most important mode of transportation because its eco-friendly, cheap and healthy. - Infrastructure - Copenhagen has 454km of bike lanes! And there is 1.2m kilometres cycled each and every day!
- Government Support. The government supports the use of cycling and recognises the financial impact it has.
- Bike Culture. Bikes of all sorts are being used by business's of every type. Check out this for a blog all about the chic style of cyclists in Copenhagen
- Communal Bike Scheme - Much like many large cities, Copenhagen has a rental bike scheme called Bycyklen. In 2016 3.6m km were ridden and 1m trips used on this scheme. Oh, and they are e-bikes too!
- Transport Integration - Bikes can be taken on the S-train, locally known as S-tog as well as ferries permitting bikes to be taken on board and even some bus services allow bikes!
