Quadratura Exhibition, Bildmuseet, Umeå, Sweden
Quadratura showcases four multi-media projection installations that repurpose obsolete audiovisual media such as 35 mm film, VHS tape, analogic television screens and the soon-to-disappear DVD. These media are sculpturally arranged so as to become screens, surfaces onto which video animations are projected. This effect seems to bring them back to life, exploring in this way the phantasmagorical properties of the moving image, and its psychic associations to desire and illusion. The artist attempts to liberate both personal and collective memories trapped within these technologies. Accelerated technological obsolescence seems to discard these memory-containers all too easily, and with them our sense of our past and our identity.
Quadratura is Daniel Canogar's first solo exhibition in Scandinavia.

Art at the Bildmuseet in Umeå
Claustrophysical 2, 2013
In Claustrophysical 2 I navigated a public space outside of the art museum Bildmuseet by using a jump rope with an attached counter and white chalk. Using the jump rope, I tried to jump as fast as I could. Every time I stopped jumping I looked at the number the counter had registered and, using the chalk, wrote it on the ground. The duration of the performance was decided by the moment when the chalk ran out. In this performance I'm interested in mirroring the pathological aspects of the contemporary workout culture by creating and adhering a controlled regime of monitoring and documenting my achievements and challenging my own physical endurance.
Performance on 4th of May 2013 on the opening of the MFA group exhibition of Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, Farewell, my lovely at Bildmuseet (Umeå, Sweden) bildmuseet.umu.se.

Statement
I am Gunilla Samberg, a visual artist, living and working in Umeå. I started my artistical career late, I was 36 years old when I decided to convert becoming a visual artist.
By then I had passed an examination, Bachelor of Science at the University of Umeå, my subjects were chemistry, zoology, botany and pedagogy. I worked as a teacher of science in college for about ten years.
A radical change for my artistical work was my studies of Estethics during the years 2005 – 2009 on A- B- and C- level. The theoretical studies gave me so much material and new thoughts which inspired me to use new expressions and new forms for my works of art. Before 2005 I had been a passionate painter. The influences from my estethic studies made me work whith different materials and expressions - installations, performances, objects and sculptures and sometimes also painting. The conceptual meaning is always is the foundation, the skeletal of my work. Form, that has an estethical effectiveness is a container that expresses the philosophical, contextual and sensitive meaning.
I have been very successful the latest years. Last year I got the two-year working grant from Bildkonstnärsfonden, Konstnärsnämnden of Sweden.
I have also had success with two exhibitions and two ordered permanent art installations since 2010.
I have three big projects in progres, they all are financed, I call them collective performance. One of them Molnskugga – Cloudshadow I plan to show in collaboration with Bildmuseet in Umeå. The other two: Convoy and Hirredh are projects connected to Umeå – the cultural capital of Europe 2014.
So, I have big plans and so much inspiration for the future. I do have confidence in my art, I have confidence in my ability to creeate new interesting works. I am curious, I am hungry. There are so many works of art not yet done.
Mostly I have exhibited in Umeå and in Norrland. In 2010 I had an exhibition in a wellknown gallery of highest quality, galleri Mors Mössa, in Gothenburg. It is really difficult to get contact to get exhibitions for instance in Stockholm.
So, what I need is qualified contacts whith the art world, inside and outside Sweden. I also need good advice and qualified context to discuss my works of art. It would be exciting to participate in the planned workshops, to know whats in it for me. I am a curious and social person, I fit in most contexts. I can always see possibilities.
All best
Gunilla Samberg
Umeå Skafferi at Survival Kit Umeå
An excerpt from a summarising video of Umeå's Survival Kit festival, where the thematics of survival was interpreted in a broad sense of the word. The festival took place in September-October 2014 and dealt with some of the most crucial issues of our time. For the original full version, see
Umeå Skafferi is a participatory art project that portrays Umeå through its food that is naturally available, which provides a lively meeting place where dialogues about food can take place among visitors, consumers and local producers. Umeå Skafferi lives on, even after the festival, through a collaborative platform with committed participants/organisers in the community and abroad.
Before and during the Survival Kit Festival, it was realised through 6-month collaboration among artist group Myvillages, Bildmuseet, Galleri Verkligheten, Studiefrämjandet, Umeå University, local food producers, retailers, chefs, craftsman, researchers, volunteers etc. Events were held over 5 weekends (Fri - Sun) during the festival covering themes such as
Week1 - Farming and Landscape
Week2 - Taste of Transparency
Week3 - Symposium: why food matters?
Week4 - Art of Transformation
Week5 - Pantry Manifesto, Umeå2014

umeå
here is a little glimpse of my adventures in Umeå, Sweden during my semester abroad with Gustavus' Sweden Today program!
I am happy to report that without a doubt, Umeå is my favorite city we have been to so far! it was really fun to be in a bigger (and much warmer) city this week after living in the frozen tundra of Jokkmokk. our hostel was located right in downtown Umeå, so we spent a lot of our week exploring the city! we visited the Västerbottens museum and Tráhppie, the Sami cultural center, listened to lectures by amazingly intelligent professors (and a Gustie alum!) at Umeå University, and went on a guided tour of the university’s Bildmuseet. the featured exhibit at the Bildmuseet was about the intersection between art and physics, and it was absolutely breathtaking. the one activity I didn’t get any footage of was dogsledding! we went after the sun had set, so it was too dark to get good videos, but that was an amazing experience as well!
thanks for watching, and don't forget to follow my instagram (@lydiakalenze) to see even more of my travels!!
