CBH Bass Tournament: Billington Sea, Plymouth, MA
I fished a lot of tournaments this year. Forty-four, to be exact. I fished that forty-fourth tournament last Sunday, December 20, with a group called the Cran Bog Hawgs. They're hardcore and fish until there's too much ice on the water. Ice doesn't stop them; only TOO MUCH ice does.
Insanity.
But I joined them last Sunday, the latest I've ever fished in all my years. It was cold and windy, and the fishing was tough. For everyone, not just me. The winning bag went just 6.25lb. There were nine boats, and no one caught a limit.
My first fish came early, which gave me hope. Unfortunately I spent most of the day struggling to find another bass, while having my hopes and dreams repeatedly dashed by pickerel, crappie, and perch. Some giant pickerel, too. Fun to catch, but disappointing when you see that it's not a bass on the end of your line.
Oh well. At least I caught two fish for fifth place. Not bad considering all but one of the other fishermen were fishing as teams.
This was my last trip of the year. These cats are fishing again this Sunday, and every Sunday after until everything freezes, but I'm done until March or so.
I think.
Probably.
We'll see...
Thanks for watching!
(And apologies for the crappy footage. I need a new camera mount/angle for my bass boat, something at the back of the boat. Next year!)

WOO!! TUNGSTEN
I'm a Christian, husband and father of three before all else.
Fishing makes up everything else that I am and inspire to be! I grew up saltwater fishing with my father but took a long break while life took over. A few years ago I tried freshwater fishing (thanks to my wife) and I've been hooked ever since! I enjoy fishing for any freshwater species, however, smallies on light tackle have a special place in my heart. I will fish from any platform but I really enjoy fishing from my kayak.
Now I'm focusing on growing as an angler in all aspects and helping others to discover and learn the sport as well.
In the future I hope to be a social media beacon for the sport and an ambassador for the sportsman.

NEPVA Bass Tournament - Charles River
As a disabled non-boater, my father has been fishing the New England Paralyzed Veterans of America tournaments for about 10 years now, and I have been fishing them as a boater since I purchased my boat in 2014.
As I said in the description of my NEPVA video from last year, this is all made possible by a large group of volunteers—active duty military personnel, veterans young and old, the Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club, and many others.
The goal of these tournaments is to allow disabled veterans (and some non-veterans) the rare chance to get back on the water despite their disabilities. Basically, a pretty damn good reason to participate.
Though typically the boater/non-boater pairing is a random draw, they allow my father and I to fish together, something I appreciate because we don't fish together often and because until recent years we really had no relationship with each other thanks to his struggles with drug addiction (he's sober now).
The first NEPVA event of the year always takes place on the Charles River near Boston, launching out of the Newton Yacht Club. This is not the greatest stretch of river, and it's made worse because the best areas to fish are a few miles away and the speed limit is just 6mph (you'll notice in the video that the towel attached to my seat barely moves when we're cruising down the river). That's at least two hours of fishing time lost if you want to fish those areas, and the tournament is only six hours long.
That said, it's not really about maximizing fishing time; it's about giving a disabled veteran a good, fun day on the water no matter the cost.
My father and I fished overhanging trees along the shoreline for most of the day. That's where we've done well in past years and it's where we did best on this day.
We ended up with a small—but relatively common for this part of the river—limit of 7.74 pounds, which tied us for fourth place.
(Unfortunately I missed a lot of his catches because I forgot to turn the camera toward him. I have since remedied this problem with a second GoPro.)
As always it was a good day on the water.
This video doesn't really highlight the non-fishing aspects of the tournament very well (I failed in the vlog department, that's for sure), but if you’re from New England and are interested in participating in one of the remaining events this year—Lake Winnipesaukee, Moultonborough, NH, September 9–11; and North Pond, Rome, ME, October 21–23—check out the links below. Boaters and volunteers are always needed for this great cause.
