Beauty is the First Test [A film by Electric Egg]
In craft we seek to explore the relationship of the process to materials, of hand to form, of eye to object
This quote by Liz Cooper, the curator of the exhibition Beauty is the First Test, was the starting point for this film, an experimental and conceptual exploration of the craft and work of five artists working in craft techniques across the UK. Beauty is the First Test, the exhibition, like the film, seeks to explore how mathematical concepts underpin the artists work and tecnhiques, and how maths theory supports the development of their work.
The filmmaker a spent a day with each of the artists, Gail Baxter, David Gates, Stella Harding, Carol Quarini and Margo Selby, to learn about their craft and work and to film the environment in which their work is created to create a film that not only shows how they interact with mathematics, but also how their environment and the tools at their disposal shapes their work.
The film was funded by the Arts Council of England's Grants for the arts scheme and is part of the touring exhibition Beauty is the First Test which was created by Liz Cooper which is exhibiting across the UK in 2013 and 2014.

Enamels
Bilston was once the home of enamelling. Helen Steatham looks at enamel boxes and the industry that created them.
During the latter part of the 18th century the town of Bilston was the largest producer of decorative enamel goods in the West Midlands, particularly snuff boxes (the taking of snuff was a popular custom at the time). The industry reflected in part the Georgian fashion for carrying small enamelled boxes to hold luxury items such as comfits for sweetening the breath, beauty patches to cover skin blemishes and of course, snuff. Other enamelled trinkets were made here, such as scent bottles, watch faces, ink pots and portrait medallions.

There's nothing cheap about Poundland founder Steve Smith's home.
These days, he lives in Hammer Hill, a 15,000sq ft mansion in Shropshire.
It comprises of five grand reception rooms, drawing room with sprung dance floor edged with disco lights, dining room with 18 seat table, bar, baby grand piano, swimming pool. And outside, a white Rolls-Royce.
The mansion has 80 windows and is filled to the brim with costly goods.
But Steve hasn't always lived a life of unadulterated luxury.
He started out on his parent's market stall in Bilston, in the West Midlands.
It was while working there that he noticed the 10p per item box made the most cash - and that gave him the genius idea to create a shop that sold EVERYTHING for £1.
His experience as a market trader buying unwanted stock worked in his favour, and in 1990, the shop was launched.

Birmingham ( (listen), locally also: ) is the second-most populous city in the United Kingdom, after London, and the most populous city in the English Midlands. It is also the most populous metropolitan district in the United Kingdom, with an estimated 1,137,123 inhabitants, and is considered the social, cultural, financial, and commercial centre of the Midlands. It is the main local government of the West Midlands conurbation, which is the third most populated urban area in the United Kingdom, with a population of 2,897,303 in 2017. The wider Birmingham metropolitan area is the second largest in the United Kingdom with a population of over 4.3 million. It is frequently referred to as the United Kingdom's second city.A market town in the medieval period, Birmingham grew in the 18th-century Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw advances in science, technology, and economic development, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society. By 1791 it was being hailed as the first manufacturing town in the world. Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided an economic base for prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century. The Watt steam engine was invented in Birmingham. The resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of political radicalism which, under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain, was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London, and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy. From the summer of 1940 to the spring of 1943, Birmingham was bombed heavily by the German Luftwaffe in what is known as the Birmingham Blitz. The damage done to the city's infrastructure, in addition to a deliberate policy of demolition and new building by planners, led to extensive urban regeneration in subsequent decades.
Birmingham's economy is now dominated by the service sector. The city is a major international commercial centre, ranked as a beta- world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network the joint highest ranking with Edinburgh and Manchester of all British cities outside of London; and an important transport, retail, events and conference hub. Its metropolitan economy is the second largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $121.1bn (2014), and its six universities make it the largest centre of higher educat ...

SUMMARY
=======
Birmingham is one of England's principal industrial centres and has a history of industrial and scientific innovation. It was once known as 'city of a thousand trades' and in 1791, Arthur Young (the writer and commentator on British economic life) described Birmingham as the first manufacturing town in the world. Right up until the mid-19th century Birmingham was regarded as the prime industrial urban town in Britain and perhaps the world, the town's rivals were more specific in their trade bases. Mills and foundries across the world were helped along by the advances in steam power and engineering that were taking place in the city. The town offered a vast array of industries and was the world's leading manufacturer of metal ware, although this was by no means the only trade flourishing in the town.By the year 2000, of the 4,000 inventions copyrighted in the UK, 2,800 came from within a 35-mile radius of Birmingham. Peter Colegate of the Patent Office stated that Every year, Birmingham amazes us by coming up with thousands of inventions. It is impossible to explain but people in the area seem to have a remarkable ability to come up with, and have the dedication to produce, ideas. While the time line of industry and innovation listed below is extensive, it is by no means a comprehensive list of Birmingham's industrial and scientific achievements, more a guide to highlight the great diversity in the city's industrial might, which can still be seen today.
