British Virgin Islands - The Baths of Virgin Gorda March 2019
On day 4 of our trip we set sail from Jost Van Dyke and travel about 15 miles to the Baths of Virgin Gorda. The Baths are a must see on our trip to the BVI. This BVI National Park is like no place on earth. I call it a big play ground for adults. The Baths are a series of huge boulders stacked on top of each other forming a hiking trails through tidal pools, grottos, passages and underwater tunnels.
Be sure to get there early to pick up one of the free day mooring balls and beat the crowd. You can either snorkel in or take your dingy in part way and tie up on the lines off shore and swim from there.
If you land at Spring Bay on the east, the trail takes you up to the top of the Baths. Here you will be charged a few buck by the park service to continue. If you have a cruising park permit make sure to bring it with you or take a picture of it. We then made our way down the west side to Devils Bay and started our hike through the Baths.
We spent a few hours exploring and then headed onto Leverick Bay in the North Sound for the night. We arrived and filled up with water. Since the Bitter End Yacht Club and Saba Rock got wiped out by hurricane Irma, Leverick Bay is the only place to get water and fuel on the east end of the BVIs.
We were lucky enough to be there on a Tuesday night so we caught the Micheal Beans pirate show at the resort.
What an awesome day sailing, hiking, more sailing and a Pirate show! Does it get any better? Ooh, ooh pinch me!
Sail On! Mark

Hike in Bitter End, B.V.I.
Hiked to the top of Bitter End on the island of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands!
Virgin Gorda really is Paradise
I decided to kick start the EW by talking about some of my favorite tropical islands. I first fell in love with Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands more than a decade ago and I am still spoiled by it beauty. I end up comparing other islands I visit to it and so far nothing else has come close. There is a part of Virgin Gorda around 5 square miles covered with massive granite boulders and surrounded by white sand beaches called The Baths.
In my travels here I met someone I consider just about the luckiest man alive, Steve Green. Forty years ago before there was a national park Steve showed up and bought 6 acres of ocean front land he used to create Toad Hall. His property is like something out of a Disney movie. Half of his land is covered in boulders and caves that slope down all the way to the ocean. At the bottom lies a incredible white sand beach. Steve spent a lot of time living on his land first to get to know it before building a small Eco Resort with 4 villas. By the time he built he had really studied the land and how to harmonize with it. For example he somehow managed to create a swimming pool tucked in side 6 massive boulders. He decided to live close to nature by creating overhanging roofs so the windows can always stay open. There are so many unique details about Toad Hall that make it relaxing. Floors made out of river rock massage your feet while you walk. In the dining room a breeze blows through keeping it cool ( An overhanging roof eliminated the need for walls). But most amazing of all is the walk to the beach. With a style like Swiss Family Robinson Steve built catwalks over 3 acres of boulders down to the water. As you walk over the catwalks you can peer into crevices and caverns hidden in the massive boulders. Except of course when you are staring at the panoramic ocean views. Halfway down the catwalk is a sun deck overlooking the ocean to sit and enjoy the sunsets.
After reaching the beach you stroll a hundred feet to the first cavern that leads into the Baths National Park. The national park consists of thousands of massive boulders the locals call God's Marbles. They are all balanced on top of each other and leaning against each other forming cathedral like caverns of granite. At the end of the winding trail lies Devils Bay a white sand lagoon with clear blue water.
