Africa's Longest Arch Bridge - Birchenough Bridge Zimbabwe
The bridge crosses Zimbawe's longest and widest river called Save.
Birchenough Bridge is Zimbabwe's finest piece of Engineering and one of the wonders of world Engineering. The structure is the third longest single-arch bridge in the world, second only to the bridge over Sydney Harbour and to the Bayonne Bridge, New York.(USA).
Birchenough bridge was designed by Mr. Ralph Freeman who assisted in designing the bridge over the. Zambezi at the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the bridge over Sydney Harbour. The bridge is named after Sir Birchnough who was the chairman of Beit Trust and assisted in the building of the bridge. Sir Henry Birchenough ashes are buried beneath the structure of the bridge.
Work started in June 1934. The bridge was officially opened on December 20, 1935, by Sir Herbert Stanley, then Governor of Southern Rhodesia. It was build under 2 years.
The staff comprised some thirty Europeans, and half that number were skilled steel erectors and crane drivers from England. Nearly 600 locals were employed as laborers on the work.Remarkable.
Ladies and gentleman enjoy some never seen footage of Birchnough bridge.

On both sides of the bridge, a picture of Sir Birchenough picture is engraved & this beautiful entrance welcomes you to Zimbabwe's most beautiful bridge.
I am particularly fascinated by the statistics: Lets explore a bit in the game of numbers.
# Some 90,000 rivets were driven at the site by pneumatic riveters supplied with compressed air from petrol-driven compressors.
#The bridge was built at a cost approximately £150,000, in 1934.
# The weight of the steel used to built Birchnough Bridge is 1 500 tonnes
In 2000 its load capacity was reduced and only vehicle weighing less than 25 tonnes are allowed to cross.
currently some boom gates are at the entrance of the bridge and only cars going in one direction are allowed.
