On this episode, we visit one of our favorite attractions in the historic town of Tombstone, AZ: The Birdcage Theatre.
Originally opened in 1881, this theater has seen a lot over the years, starting with more civilized entertainment, to more rowdy fun.
Evidence of rowdier times are riddled all over the building. For example, you can see a reported 140 bullet holes, the faro table where Doc Holliday and Johnny Ringo had their famous duel, the remains of a poker game that went on for many years and had a $1000 buy-in, as well as the famous Black Moriah, the hearse that delivered all but six bodies to the many buried at the world famous Boothill Cemetery.
The Birdcage Theatre is part museum, part paranormal attraction. Roaming this very old building, you will get a sense of its oldness. From the rickety original floors where many famous men like Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Johnny Ringo and Curly Bill Brocius once walked, to the musty, dusty smells revealing the antiquity of this building, you will be immersed in history through all of your senses.
No wonder this place is reported to be haunted. Of course, we at the Cactus Atlas are very skeptical about the paranormal, but we do enjoy haunted history, and this location delivers it in spades.
Watch as we attempt to communicate with the spirits in the main part of the theater and see if we have any luck. Who knows, perhaps in one of the frames in this video, evidence of the afterlife will materialize. Please let us know if you see or hear anything suspicious on our video!
When you enter the famous Birdcage Theatre, you will be greeted by a friendly and informative presentation about the theater and some of its history. They will tell you about some of the artifacts present in the main lobby, including an original bar and cash register, left in its original state, as well as some other interesting artifacts such as original show posters.
If you ask one of the hosts about experiences with ghosts, chances are they will tell you some interesting stories. I know we heard a thing or two on our visit that got our attention!
At this point, you will have paid nothing to view the main lobby and can choose to leave. They will not pressure you and will be gracious for you having stopped by. At this point, you can choose to pay a fee to do a self-guided tour of the building. That is what we do in this video, and you can watch and see what we thought and decide if the self-guided tour is for you.
The prices are as follows:
$14 per adult
$12 per child (8 to 18 years old)
$12 for seniors (60 years or older)
$40 for a family pack
They also offer paranormal tours and events, and you can find out all that info on their official website:
If you are looking for the theater, check out our link to google maps:
We also give some visual directions in our video, but it is very easy to find.

ABOUT:
Great family fun, entertainment and food! Step into Tombstone AZ and you'll be stepping back into the rough and toughdays of the wild west. In the 1880s, Tombstone was a booming mining town that brought a rush of prospectors and miners looking to strike it rich. It also became a magnet to thieves, card-sharks, murderers, rustlers and an abundance of bad guys. Founded in 1879 by Ed Schieffelin who discovered rich silver deposits, the town grew quickly. Within two years, it became an isolated metropolitan city with two banks, three newspapers. four churches, an opera house and even a bowling alley. But the thriving streets of Tombstone became wild and wicked with 110 saloons, 14 gambling halls, several dancing halls with brothels. That’s just a small part of the excitement you’ll find here!

TOMBSTONE COURT HOUSE, TOMBSTONE ARIZONA HISTORIC COURTHOUSE.
Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, located in Tombstone, Arizona, United States, preserves the original Cochise County courthouse. The two-story building, constructed in 1882 in the Victorian style, is laid out in the shape of a cross and once contained various county offices, including those of the sheriff, recorder, treasurer, and the Board of Supervisors as well as courtrooms and a jail. Inside, the courthouse contains a museum with numerous artifacts from the town's history while outside, a replica gallows has been constructed in the courtyard to mark the spot where seven men were hanged for various crimes. The park was one of the first to be designated as a state park and in 1959 was the first to open following the 1957 establishment of the Arizona State Parks BoardFollowing the 1877 discovery of silver ore by prospector Ed Schieffelin in southeastern Arizona, the town of Tombstone was founded and grew rapidly as miners flooded the area in the hope of finding their fortunes. At the time, the area was part of Pima County with the county seat Tucson being a rugged two-day, 70-mile journey away. In 1881, the residents of the thriving boomtown voted to separate from Pima County and the territorial legislature subsequently formed a new county, Cochise County. A new courthouse was built the following year and housed all of the county's offices.
Tombstone remained the county seat until 1929, when outvoted by a growing Bisbee, and the county seat was moved there. The last county office left the courthouse in 1931. Except for an ill-fated attempt to convert the courthouse into a hotel during the 1940s, the building stood vacant until 1955. When the Tombstone Restoration Commission acquired it, they began the courthouse rehabilitation and the development as a historical museum that has continued to operate as a state park since 1959. It features exhibits and thousands of artifacts which tell of Tombstone's colorful past.
The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

A state that is known to people who love the outdoors, Arizona home to some of the most incredible scenic vistas, spectacular canyons, unbelievably colourful sunsets, and stunning star-filled nights.
