Gannets on Bird Island, Lamberts Bay, South Africa
Bird Island Nature Reserve is one of only six places in the world and the only accessible spot in the world to see Cape gannets (Morus capensis) breed.
Part two: Bird Island, Lamberts Bay
In part two of my video we went to Bird Island in Lamberts Bay. Most of the birds have migrated for the winter, but you can see a few Cape Gannets. We also visited a skeleton museum of the animals you can find in the area.
Hope you enjoy!

Kaptölpel-Kolonie in Lambert's Bay - Südafrika
The Cape Gannet Colony at Bird Island is one of the most monitored colonies in the world. As the only accessible spot in the world to see Cape gannets breed, Bird Island is a bird-watcher’s paradise. The island’s hide is perfectly situated to observe their activities first-hand and learn more about their breeding habits. Other birds include the African penguin, the Cape cormorant and the kelp gull.
SA Ramsar - False Bay Nature Reserve
False Bay Nature Reserve, a mere 25km from Cape Town city center, is South Africa's 22nd Ramsar wetland. It is a unique wetland due to its urban location, and focuses on both conservation and recreation. This video gives you a brief overview what to expect.

Some Bird Photography and The Misadventures Continue
Bird photography isn't something I do every day. Mostly because I don't really have the patience for this type of photography. But here in Lambert's Bay, South Africa there's a place called Bird Island National Reserve and I couldn't resist the urge to go somewhere with a name like that.
So, we woke up and did a little bird photography at the reserve. It was such a cool place, and it was absolutely covered with birds. I don't think I've seen something like it in South Africa before. Jodie and I sat there for ages just snapping away photos of the beautiful mess of birds.
After our bird photography session, we headed north towards Namibia. On the way, we decided to camp at Goegap Nature Reserve which is home to quite a bit of wildlife. But, our series of misadventures on this trip continued as we broke an important part of our tent and couldn't repair it. Luckily, the park warden let us camp out in a bush hut.
In the park, there were some wildlife photography opportunities. But, most of them were simply way too far from the van to get great photos. So, I'll have to settle with the bird photography of the morning.

Cape Gannets
There are three species of gannets worldwide. Gannets mate for life and can survive for up to 30 years. They usually breed in colonies on offshore islands. Gannets may lack grace on land, however, they are master fliers like these Cape Gannets.
