Bird Watching in Coorg, Karnataka, India
Kodagu/ Coorg is an administrative district in Karnataka. It occupies an area of 4102 sq km in the western ghats of south western Karnataka. Situated at an elevation of 900 mts. above the msl, it has a total population of 554519. It touches the state of Kerala on its three sides. Agriculture is the most important factor upholding the economy of Kodagu and the main crops cultivated are rice and coffee. Coorg is rich in natural resources that includes timber and spices. Kodagu is known for its coffee and people.
The highest peak is Tadiandanol(1750mts) and Pushpgiri the 2nd highest(1715mts). The main river in Kodagu is the Kaveri which originates from the Talakaveri. The Kodavas were the earliest inhabitants and agriculturalists in Kodagu having lived for centuries at the place. They were a warrior community as well. The Kodavas revere ancestors, arms and worship a number of deities, besides river Kaveri.
Kodagu is a rural region with most of the economy based on agriculture, plantations and forestry. Coffee is now days the major cash crop. In recent years , tourism has also begun to play an important role in the economy. Eco-tourism is being promoted in the form of walks and trekking tours arranged by most of the resorts.
The coffee plantations may be looked upon as semi forests that together with the protected forests support a large and varied population of bird species. During the past few decades, silver oak has been introduced as the main shade tree but it is extremely important that in addition to silver oak, a good density of local varieties of trees should be maintained and heavy shade must be resorted to.
In the kodava community we saw a unique way of protecting small areas of forests to preserve the flora and fauna. This unique concept is known as “ Devarakaadu” wherein an estimated number of 1214 pockets of forests have been earmarked as bio-buffers on the pretext of worshiping various deities. These devaarkaadus stand as a proof to the sense of concern for preservation of wildlife among people of Kodagu.
However deforestation, indiscriminate tree felling, submergence and encroachment on forest land gravely threaten all the rich flora and fauna.
While we travelled to Coorg, our stay was in a heritage resort which happens to be deep in the forests away from the chaos of the town of Madekeri. It is quite a known fact that coorg and its surrounding areas are rich in bird species. I had already contacted a bird watcher, Ganesh who is a famous name in the South. He is gifted with a unique ability to mimic voices of most of the birds. Though pre monsoon showers had already splashed coorg, which in a way meant little opportunity for birding, yet I decided to go ahead with the bird guide who had convinced me quite well to show around 30 bird species endemic to south India. The place where I had to meet Mr. Ganesh was around one hour away from my resort, somewhere close to the Dubare Elephant camp. It was raining and he was doubting the birding zeal of a North Indian birder. I reached before he came and we decided to move ahead. He greeted me with a hot cup of coffee which he had got from his home. This birding zone lies along the Chiklihole Reservoir which indeed is surrounded by a lush green forest cover. It had stopped raining and I was happy that the weather favoured me to locate some 16 endemic species and 23 common bird species. It was an amazing experience. Before parting our ways, he gifted me a bird book and a lapel pin. This gesture was quite warm as compared to the handshakes made generally while saying goodbyes. He has personally thanked all the members of Chandigarh Bird Club and has requested all to visit Coorg. The video clip had already been shared by me on the group.

Cauvery Nisargadhama Forest Park - Kushalnagar ( Coorg ), Karnataka
Cauveri Nisargadhama is an island formed by river Cauveri near Kushalnagar in the district of Kodagu, Karnataka. It is a 64-acre (260,000 m2) island, with lush foliage of bamboo, sandalwood and teak trees. The island is accessible through a hanging rope bridge over river Cauveri. We came across many beautiful tree paintings on dead as well as live trees. Life size sculptures of Kodava men and women performing traditional dance are indeed very attractive. So is sculpture of life style of the members of typical village family. The large deer park is one of the main attraction. Kaladhama handicrafts shop is located very near the bridge for the tourists to acquire a memento.

Monsoon Ride to Coorg - The Scotland of India - Part 2 | Mandalapatti | Abbey Falls | RE TB 500
Second Part of Our Monsoon Ride to Coorg
This ride was by far the best ride of my life.
Madikeri or Coorg was always fascinating for me because of it's pleasant weather.
I have been to Coorg many times mostly on car because it is on the way to my hometown Kasaragod, i have never been to Coorg on my bike. So i have been thinking to ride to this place from many times.
Finally when my colleagues was planning a trip, i suggested to go to Madikeri since it is peak monsoon and it will be the best time to visit this place.
So me being a Pluviophile, i was more excited to ride in the rain after a long time.
As i said, i have been to Madikeri many times on the regular route, but this time we found an unexplored route from Kushal Nagar to Madikeri, I must say this was the best route i have ever ridden on, lush green on both the side of beautifully paved road and the music of the mother nature, unexpectedly running into random unexplored waterfalls, foggy thick forest, couldn't have asked anything more.
This place never disappoints me, and i'm more in love this place now.
And the homestay we stayed was beyond our expectation, i think i will have to make a separate video about it.
The homestay is situated in the middle of an estate surrounded by the nature and you can hear the birds chirping and crickets singing songs there.
