Edwin B. Forsythe NWR - Osprey Banding
In the late afternoon of June 24, 2014, Ben Wurst, Habitat Program Manager with CWF was joined by Ann Marie Mason Morrison, with Friends of Forsythe NWR, our founding partner with the Osprey Cam, and two USFWS interns, Jessie and Kirsten to band the three osprey nestlings produced at the Osprey Cam nest. This is one of the most difficult nests to reach. It either takes a boat (at high tide) or two 20' ladders (at low tide) to cross a 15' wide ditch on the coastal salt marsh. Anyone who has crossed the ditch can attest to how difficult it is. Now you can watch and see what when into banding these three nestlings. A portion of the video was cut when Ben was attempting to repair the sound at the camera equipment box. At the same time the nest was cleaned of harmful plastic debris that the birds used as nesting material. A total of 3 balloons and a plastic bag were removed. The three young were banded with USGS bird bands for future tracking. Enjoy!

TOPWATER STRIPED BASS (Striper) FISHING in New Jersey
Kristi and I took a trip to New Jersey to do some striped bass (striper) fishing in some marsh flats and it was a blast catching them on topwater with Spooks, Chug Bugs, and other fun topwater lures. The bass were actually decent size but it's always a blast when you can catch them on topwater the whole day!
Book Dan Schafer with Insomniac Fishing Charters in Stone Harbour NJ if you want to catch these fun fish even on the fly

TURNING THE TIDE / The Nest Box Project
TURNING THE TIDE takes the viewer into two urban wetlands in the most densely-populated state in the nation, New Jersey. The Hackensack Meadowlands and the Hamilton-Trenton Marsh were once used as landfills, but today they are being slowly nursed back to health through conservation measures. TIDE was awarded a CINE Gold Eagle and a World Medal at the New York Festivals.
This is an online video piece I edited after the 30-minute program was completed. It follows the NJ Meadowlands Commission's Nest Box Project, which usually happens in early spring. Only a small piece of this sequence made it into the final program, but there were great moments and good info enough for its own web clip.
October 5, 2017 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr
The warm start to the fall may be causing the coastal run to start a little slower than we’d like, but it’s also extending some of the outstanding freshwater action in the NW part of New Jersey and throughout Delaware and Pennsylvania. We start the week off with mix of hybrid stripers at Hopatcong before hitting the front beaches for new arrivals as mullet are on the move and migratory stripers are slowly appearing from north to south. The big striper in this week's video was eeled up in AMBROSE CHANNEL (not actually the light as referenced!)
The outstanding porgy action continues with more Dream Boat “scuppers” bringing their headboat catches to shops including in the Barnegat area, while big bluefish to 20 pounds have come across party boat rails this week out of Shark River and Manasquan. School stripers and tautog behind Little Egg and Absecon, while sheepshead are still being registered at the bridge at Townsend Inlet.
We’re also getting reports of topwater stripers in Cape May County, and the first keeper “rock” on the Delaware side have appeared at piers at Woodland and Port Mahon. Surfcasters looking to kick off their season this weekend have two great options, one on LBI and the other the DMS Invitational in Delaware. See video for full details in our weekly video forecast for NJ and DE region.

November 19, 2015 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.
Blitzing stripers, record bluefish, and a bounty of biscuits and blackfish at the coastal wrecks. It's all about variety along the NJ and DE coast this third week of November, as boaters and beach fishermen are all getting into the action.
For the last two weeks, boats have been getting into solid striper action from Monmouth County to Cape May County, with some of the very best action somewhere in between. Wheeling and diving birds along the Jersey Shore with occasional ‘parking lot’ conditions signify the mad dog bite locations, with stripers of varying sizes (up to 58 pounds trolled off IBSP earlier this week on a #4 Green Maja) taking trolled lures, swim shads, jigs, plugs, and of course, live bunker.
While folks in Delaware anxiously await the coastal arrival of striped bass, it does appear the monster bluefish have hit the local grounds with a vengeance – this past Monday, Dr. Luis Mispireta brought a 24.8-pound bluefish in to Lewes Harbour Marina caught at Del-Jersey-Land Reef aboard Capt. Brent Wiest’s Katydid for a new state record, eclipsing the 35-year state record by 3 pounds! Read more about that catch at The Fisherman's website at
Gusting NW/N winds to 20 to 25 knots are predicted through Saturday morning the 21st of November, but party boats will be looking for a window to sail as black sea bass and blackfish are keeping many rail-grabbers amped for bottom fishing action. More than a few impressive tautog reports have come in during this first-full week of the six-fish bag limit in New Jersey, as local tackle shops are working hard to keep the crab stock fresh and filled.
A lot of options this week along the NJ/DE coast, with many arm-weary anglers referring to the recent action as some of the very best in many, many years – if the winds kick up this weekend, best bet may be to stock up on some fresh bunker and hit the beaches for big stripers and bluefish.

HawkWatch 2017
Bird watching enthusiasts gather in the shadow of Gunsight Mountain for HawkWatch, a weekend of spotting migrating spring raptors, on Sunday, April 16, 2017. This unique migration site, located 120 miles northeast of Anchorage, is known for concentrations of rough-legged hawks, northern harriers, goshawks, bald and golden eagles, and especially large concentrations of Harlan's subspecies of red-tail hawks. Monitoring New Jersey's Falcons
Each spring and summer we monitor nest sites for activity. At active nests a remote motion-activated camera is deployed in spring. It allows us to be able to identify each individual bird by their color auxiliary leg bands. It also provides more valuable information including nest success, age, site fidelity, and the turnover rate in the population. After we have successfully identified the breeding pair, we continually monitor each nest or eyrie until the young are old enough to band (approximately 3-4 weeks old). In 2013 there were 26 active nests in New Jersey. The core of the population continues to nest on towers and buildings throughout the state.
