The Sedona Wetlands is working to accommodate guest interested in bird watching. The wetlands welcomes many different species of birds that migrate from the north during the winter. We spoke with the manager of a local business who leads bird walks around Sedona and asked why the wetlands are such a prime location for bird viewing. Also, Parks and Recreation talks about what they are doing at the preservation to accommodate new visitors.

Birdwatching Grows in Popularity
April 21, 2014 - NAZ Today's Kimberly Craft looks into America's fastest growing outdoor activity. 51.3 millions Americans have been recorded saying they watch birds while more are taking up birding each day.
Ornithologist Dena Greenwood from Jay's Bird Barn in Sedona discusses why birdwatching has become the nation's second most popular outdoor pastime. She says it's almost like a meditation because one is so focused on the bird that the rest of the world melts away.
Not only is birding a way to relax and enjoy nature, it is a big business. Arizona ranks third in the nation for attracting bird watchers. They come to find more than 300 species living in the Grand Canyon and more than 200 species in the Verde Valley. In the communities surrounding these areas, birdwatchers spend money in hotels, restaurants, car rentals, and even shopping.
The pastime is advertised more with a festival in its honor. The Verde River Valley Nature Organization will present the 14th annual Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. The festival will take place at Dead Horse Ranch State Park on April 24th - April 27th. This year's festival theme is the Art of Birding. Knowledgable guides will lead attendees to birding hot spots and secret hideaways. Experienced birders are encouraged to attend, along with fledgling birders and even non-birders.
For more information on the festival or birding adventures visit the Arizona State Parks website or the VRVNO.

The Arizona Desert
This is just a quick little clip I made to show my student the Arizona desert when we talk about animal habitats. I wish I actually could have gotten more pictures of the animals, but I guess they hide out most of the day to keep cool.

Walnut Canyon National Monument | Hiking and Photography in Arizona 2017 Vlog
Camera Crusades; The Adventure Continues... In this week's adventure I wanted to visit Walnut Canyon National Monument to push myself as a travel photographer. When researching this location I didn't see any images on Google that really blew my mind. Not that Google Images are the authority, but I find it is a useful tool. Not all locations can be shot at sunrise or sunset, with this in mind I hit the road towards my next adventure.

The Tombstone Grand Hotel, Tombstone ,AZ.
The inspiration for The Tombstone Grand Hotel comes from the original Grand Hotel whichin its prime housed some of Tombstone's most famous residents including Wyatt and Virgil Earp, Doc Holliday, and the Clanton Gang. Unfortunately, the Grand did not survive the devastating fire in May of 1882 and was rebuilt as Big Nose Kate's Saloon.Whenthe Grand Hotel first opened its doors in September of 1880, it was declared one of the finest hotels in the state complete with luxurious furnishings, beautiful artand affable staff. As we set out to create a unique boutique experience in the legendary town of Tombstonewe looked to preserve some of the elements that made the Grand Hotel so special. We too pride ourselves in the quality of our establishment and our dedicated staff. Our commitment to the comfort and happiness of our guests manifests itself as White Hat Service.
WONDERING ABOUT THE BIRD?
Some of the best birding in the United States happens here in Cochise County. Approximately 400 species of birds can be found in the area year roundwith an additional 250 species that use the San Pedro River during migration in the spring and fall.
Sitting atop The Tombstone Grand Hotel logo is a cactus wren, the state bird of Arizona and resident trouble maker. The Cactus Wren's gregarious personality and distinct features make it fairly easy to spot. Be on the lookout for a vocal bird with abrown head, white eye stripe and spotted tail feathers.
Cactus Wrens are also notorious for getting into mischief. Being curious birds, it is not uncommon for them to be found flying about in automobiles where the owner has left a window open.

I Support Wildlife RAA 2016
I Support Wildlife bridges the widening gap between wildlife facing new threats and a sharp increase in the cost of conservation. A one-year membership lets you explore Arizona's unique natural heritage while taking action to preserve our wildlife legacy for the future.
Arizona is home to more than 800 wildlife species, from Gambel’s quail to bighorn sheep. But their natural habitats — which stretch across 50 million acres of public land — are increasingly at risk.
A rapidly changing world presents a host of threats to wildlife: Expanding cities, competing uses for open space and increasing demands for a limited water supply all play a role in this.
It is the job of the Arizona Game and Fish Department to protect, restore and preserve these species and the places where they live. But no Arizona tax dollars go to support this mission.
Instead, the sales of hunting and fishing licenses are the primary source of funding. However, these funds are not keeping pace with the cost of wildlife management, leaving our native animals vulnerable at a critical time.
You are the Solution!
Arizona's diverse wildlife need help now to grow and thrive. We need to expand the community of people just like you who are committed to preserving our state's natural heritage.
Say I Support Wildlife today!
Your $25 membership will help ensure that future generations of Arizonans can enjoy our state's wildlife and the habitats on which they depend.
