Birds of Eden, in the Crags on the Garden Route of South Africa
Via wikemy.com/birdsofeden Birds of Eden is the world's biggest free flight aviary. It is in essence a sanctuary for unwanted birds from all over the world. Many were shoulder pets before, like most of the parrots you'll find here. Others were donated by zoos and even companies like Disneyland. The aviary is over two hectares in size and netting stretches 34 metres into the sky above.
Birds of Eden is located in the Crags right next to the primate sanctuary monkeyland, on the Garden Route of South Africa, close to the small town of Nature's Valley.

Driving the Garden Route: Birds of Eden to Tsitsikamma| South Africa Day 6 Part II
9/20/18 After our visit to Monkeyland, we walked over to Birds of Eden, a free flight bird sanctuary. We saw a bunch of baboons as we were leaving. I tried a Chocolate Log for the first time, which became my favorite South African candy. We stopped at Tsitsikamma to walk the suspension bridge. We went to see the Big Tree, the Groot Boom. We ended the night at one of our most remarkable airbnbs due to the lack of a bathroom door.

Birds of Eden - Plettenberg Bay Birds of Eden
Birds of Eden - Plettenberg Bay Birds of Eden is at the Crags on the way to Port Elizabeth.
We were immediately stunned by what we saw as we entered the Birds of Eden. Somebody kept saying Hello, Hello and I looked for a young child and then thought my wife is being silly. And then we saw Charlie! Charlie is a ringneck parakeet and very cheecky. He climbed onto my hand and eventually sat on my shoulder, repeating: What are you doing, Boy? with a perfect inflection!
It would be best to go early, as birds are normally more active early in the day and late afternoon. The variety of birds can keep you busy for a long time. And you can spend a lot of time just watching the interaction of the birds.
Birds of Eden offer Guide Tours.
I am embarrassed to admit that when my sister suggested we go there I thought to myself: Who wants to look at a lot of birds in cages? I was so wrong. No cages! Just birds flying by so closely that you can feel the wind of the wings. It is an experience worth paying for.
Knysna Loeries so close you can touch them. Hornbills so close you do not need binoculars. Pelicans and Red Ibis and Bromvoël and many more. And later the day, when I come from the restaurant, Charlie is entertaining a few kids with his antics, a real character!
Monkey Land and World of Birds is a must visit when you are in the Plettenberg Bay area.
What I am doing is when we go on holiday, whether we camp, stay in a chalet or even a grand hotel, from time to time, we visit places and I try to share it with you. So that if you were to go to Plettenberg Bay you will have an idea of what you can do, see or where you can go. Sometimes I share about accommodation. Sometimes I share places to go and things to see. And things you can do, whether you hike. cycle or row up the river in an Indian canoe..
I like nature and the more earthy things, so rarely will you find the grand and upmarket. Rather the down to earh and more adventurous - not the adrenalin stuff, though
