Birding around Mazzarron South-east Spain May 2019
We stayed for a week with family in Camposol, which is a large urbanisation project, build in the hills a few kilometers from the village of Mazarron . The landscape is of volcanic origin , very rocky and dry with only scrub and almost no trees. Despite this, we found quite some birds on the grounds of the urbanisation itself, probably attracted by the trees in the well watered gardens.
Identification to the best of our knowledge: feel free to correct!
Bird Watching in Costa Blanca & Calida
Holiday makers go to the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida mainly for the beautiful beaches and the Golf courses. My recent hobby of bird watching I saw a different perspective. The well maintained Nature parks are ideal for walks and bird watching

This is Santa Pola in Costa Blanca, Spain
Santa Pola
Santa Pola is located on the Costa Blanca, approximately 20 minutes drive south of Alicante airport. A small fishing port, Santa Pola is famous for its variety of landscapes, from the views of the distant mountains to the wild sand dunes.
Facilities
Santa Pola is less busy and built up than Torrevieja but still has all the facilities you would expect from a small prosperous Spanish coastal town.
Industry
Alongside tourism, Santa Pola is also home to a major salt works and the harbour has the largest amount of fishing boats of any port on the Mediterranean Sea.
Beaches
The town has several wonderful beaches, including over 4km of fine sand and crystalline water. At the Playa Lisa beach you can walk out to sea for some distance and the water still only reaches knee-height!
History
Just offshore lies the island of Tabarca, which belongs to the province of Alicante. This island was once used as a headquarters by the Berber pirates, but nowadays it is a Marine Reserve, abundant with flora and fauna on both the island and in the surrounding waters.
National Park
Las Salinas, next to the town, is a marshland area that is a protected Natural Park and declared an area of special importance for wild birds, including Flamingos and stilt birds.
Activities
Santa Pola is ideal for many nautical sports and air based pursuits. It is common to see wind surfing, sailing, swimming, fishing, jet skiing and paragliding being practised along the coast.

Synchronised movements like abruptly turning the bills (head-flagging) or marching are parts of the courtship rituals.
Overland Adventure Spain 3 - Bardenas Reales : The Spanish Death Valley
In this 3rd and FINAL EPISODE of the OVERLAND SPAIN series, I'm taking you with me in the European Death Valley, the most iconic Spanish desert ... THE BARDENAS REALES !
The Bardenas Reales is a semi-desert natural region, or badlands, of some 42k hectares/104k acres in southeast Navarre, Spain.
The soils are made up of clay, chalk and sandstone and have been eroded by water and wind creating surprising shapes, canyons, plateaus, tabular structures and isolated hills, called cabezos.
Bardenas Reales lacks urban areas, vegetation is scarce and the many streams that cross the territory have a markedly seasonal flow, staying dry most of the year.

Travel | Alicante Valencia Torrevieja | Spain España
Valencia:
The port city of Valencia is on Spain’s southeastern Orange Blossom Coast, where the Turia River meets the Mediterranean Sea. It’s known for its City of Arts and Sciences, with futuristic structures including a planetarium, an oceanarium and an interactive museum. Valencia also has several beaches, including some within nearby Albufera park, a wetlands reserve with a lake, walking trails and bird-watching.
Alicante:
Alicante is a port city on Spain’s southeastern Costa Blanca, and the capital of the Alicante province. Its old town, Barrio de la Santa Cruz, has narrow streets, colored houses and a lively nightlife scene. From here, an elevator or a steep climb leads to medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara, set on a hilltop with sweeping views of the Mediterranean coast.
Torrevieja:
Torrevieja is a city in Spain's southeastern Alicante province, on the Costa Blanca. It’s known for its Mediterranean climate and coastline. Promenades run along its sandy, resort-backed beaches. The tiny Museo del Mar y de la Sal houses exhibits exploring the town’s fishing and salt-mining history. Inland, the Lagunas de la Mata-Torrevieja Nature Park has trails and 2 salt lakes, one pink and the other green.
