Birkat Al Mouz Ruins near Nizwa in Oman
On our round trip in Oman we also spent two days in Nizwa. Not far from Nizwa is the town of Birkat al Mouz with its old town ruins. These are partly on the mountainside and offer a wonderful view of the oasis landscape.

Birkat Al-Mawz:
Birkat Al-Mawz is a village in the Ad Dakhiliyah Region of Oman. It is located at the entrance of Wadi al-Muaydin on the southern rim of Jebel Akhdar and home to a restored fort called Bait al Redidah. A road and a walking route through Wadi al-Muaydin up to the Saiq Plateau start from here.
The name Birkat al Mouz literally means “a pool of bananas”. There is now a new town nearby, and the whole area is peppered with a planation of verdant green date trees, while the Jebel Akhdar mountain range presides over the area with an air of authority. The village is nestled at the base of the mountain. The houses are made of mud, and some of them are starting to crumble. It certainly gives me plenty of opportunities to get some nice shots. One of the houses still has an active falaj (water channel) running through it while in another, we came across a pair of men’s shoes and noted the chipped painted remnants of traditional Omani décor. In the old mosque, the roof has fallen in and the beams are forlornly strewn on what remains of the floor. The door still bears its brass knob, though.A few birds can be seen teetering on some of the walls but they are the only living things you will find here, apart from insects.
wadi flooding between Birkat al Mouz and Nizwa in Oman
We had a lot of rain in Oman during the week of April 14-18, 2012. Before this we hadn't had any rain to speak of since early November 2011. When it rains in Oman, all the wadis flood, causing major disruption on roads!!

The aqueduct falaj at Birkat Al Mouz
Located at the gateway to Jebel Akhdar, Birkat Al Mouz is know for its falaj system nestled among groves of date palms.
Unlike most falaj networks, parts of it are held aboveground on Roman style aqueducts.
Under the shadow of the fort at Birkat Al Mouj, these aqueducts double as walls surrounding an orchard of date palms and a garden of greenery.

Tanuf:
Tanuf is a seaside resort in the Sultanate of Oman at the foot of Jebel Akhdar between Al Hamra and Nizwa, in the north of the Ad-Dākhilīyah region. It consists of the former partially ruined village, popular with tourists, and a more modern part linked to the presence of a bottling plant of mineral water. The irrigation system known as falaj is widespread in the Sultanate of Oman. That of Tanuf is quite particular, insofar as it is built against the cliff and raised to a height of up to 10 m1. With a length of 200 m, the falaj has retained for the most part its original route, designed more than 300 years ago. It is always used. The mosque is also preserved. During the revolt of the late 1950s, the rebels had taken refuge in the Jebel Akhdar, many of whom came from, which gave them an excellent knowledge of the terrain, particularly difficult to access. Sultan Said ibn Taimur, the father of the present Sultan Qabus ibn Said, solicited British military assistance, but their joint efforts failed at first. After further incidents, two squadrons of SAS Special Forces were called upon. It was in the context of these operations that the village was bombed on July 27, 1957 by De Havilland Venom planes of the Royal Air Force, in the absence of its inhabitants, warned.
