Around Kansas - How Barbed Wire Settled the West - March 30, 2016
(Frank) We're back again on this Wednesday morning. (Deb) So, we were out at La Crosse a few weeks ago and the Barbed Wire Museum in La Crosse. I had heard about it many times, but I had not had the chance to go. It is wonderful. Wonderful. Number one, it is really extensive. It's huge. And it is beautiful. It is so well done and all these samples of barbed wire. You're like, Really, big deal? But nothing, other than the railroads, nothing changed the West like the introduction of barbed wire. So, it is hugely important to our history. Brad Penka there was just amazing. He opened the museum for us so that I could get in and take pictures to share with you. I think the museum opens for the season maybe at the end of April or first of May, something like that. So, make sure you put La Crosse on your travel plans. But they also have the Post Rock Museum there and they've got Bank Museum. (Frank) Another rock. (Deb) You know, I'm thinking rock of the week. What do you think Frank? (Frank) Yea. We've had Teter Rock and Pawnee Rock. (Deb) Castle Rock and Pawnee Rock. (Frank) A lot of rocks here in Kansas. (Deb) We've got rocks and then we've got the Point of Rocks. I know that I talked about that out at Cimarron. There's just no end to the rocks we have and they're really cool rocks. I was thinking actually driving over today, we should just do a rock of the week. If you've got a cool rock that we don't know about... (Frank) Now, do you know who actually invented barbed wire? I was hoping you did, because I have no idea. (Deb) Glidden. (Frank) You mean the paint guy? (Deb) Yea, yea. (Frank) Really? (Deb) Maybe we'll talk about that. I thought... (Frank) So, we had, he invented barbed wire and then he invented paint, and then painted the barbed wire. I don't know. But that's what the story is about, is we're going to go to this museum in La Crosse and we're going to look at a lot of barbed wire. I think we're ready to see the story. (Karla) First there was nothing but a vast open range. Native bison roamed free. Then came the settlers, and with them, a need to define their territory. Soon, miles of fences were built. Territorial disputes ensued, rights came into question, and the character of the land began to change. When the dust settled, people were once again able to live relatively in peace. The days of the open range were gone. In La Crosse, Kansas, a museum complex celebrates the seemingly mundane chore of fencing with displays on post rock and barbed wire. Some say it was the six-gun that settled the west. Others know better. It was an unusual invention that in a few short years grew into a multi-million dollar industry: barbed wire. It was a simple invention originally designed to protect a small family garden. Within a few short years of its invention, its use had spread across the prairie and eventually around the world. Barbed wire made a number of important contributions to western history. It redefined the landscape. The legal dispute that erupted between its inventors made its way to the United States Supreme Court set a precedent in patent law. It made men wealthy and their wealth built public buildings, and a major university. It was a simple invention that changed the direction of history and its impact resonates today. The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum is devoted solely to the history and legend of this part of American history often referred to as the “Devils Rope”. On exhibit are over 2400 barbed wire varieties; including samples manufactured between the years 1870 and 1890. Hundreds of antique fencing tools illustrate the inventiveness of pioneers. The museum presents interesting ways to learn about one of the Midwest’s most important contributions to America's history. Dioramas of early barbed wire use, a theatre featuring educational films, the Barbed Wire Hall of Fame, the museum archives room, and a research library all help to conjure up images of settling the Midwest, range wars between homesteaders and cattlemen, and the transformation of the open prairie into America's bread basket. Brad Penka is president of the Kansas Barbed Wire Collectors Association and you will count yourself lucky to have him show you around. His passion is contagious. The collections are displayed so artfully, so thoughtfully, that I can promise you will never again take barbed wire for granted. Nor will you look at those picturesque rock fence posts in quite the same way. This museum complex is located next to the city park so there's lots of room for the kids, who can't be fenced in, to run off some energy. A must for your Kansas bucket list!
Azabu Juban | residential area - 4K/GoPro Hero7
Azabu-Juban is a lively residential area in central Tokyo with a mixture of Japanese shops, restaurants and bars. The convenience of several supermarkets in a central location and the proximity of Hiroo and Roppongi make it one of the more trendy and sought after residential areas of Tokyo. The main street, a block away from a busy road junction, has a village-like feel with cobbled stoned paving in some places. This atmosphere is created by the narrow streets, slow moving traffic, and a mixture of stores operated by older owners. Even the McDonald's has been carefully designed to be architecturally sympathetic.

Tokyo’s Best French Restaurant #1 | Prévenance Shizukai
Here is a glimpse of the dinner I had at Prévenance Shizukai last Friday.
I was a collaboration dinner with Miyazaki prefecture's ingredients and alcohol so a lot of shochu was served which was unusual! It was an interesting marriage and the food was pure delight as always.
Prévenance Shizukai is one of my favorite French restaurants in town. I could go there every week!
Budget for such a dinner is 150 US dollars. On the high end but so much worth it :-)
Bon appétit !

Miyajima Island Shrine to Nature - JVT 2012-01
The island of Miyajima lies in the Seto Inland Sea, near Hiroshima. The entire wooded island, 30 kilometers around, stands as a shrine symbolizing reverence for nature. The 1,400-year old shrine is built over the water and seems to float against a backdrop of green mountain. Each April over 400 Noh performers gather here from all over Japan for a special sacred event. The sense that they are performing in the midst of nature is especially intense at high tide, when the sea rises almost to the level of the shrine's Noh stage.

A Beginner's Guide to Azabu-Juban
Azabu-Juban is a low-key neighbourhood in Tokyo, but with lots to offer. It's got trendy shops and cafes, and a bit of European flair with its cobbled roads and Western-style architecture. It's also home to import shops and international business (and many foreigners as well).

ASC Eats: Fukuryu Ramen
Fukuryu Ramen isn't about the quick, cheap ramen you make on your dorm room hotplate. The bowls served at this Columbus eatery are rich, fulfilling and packed with flavor. In the final installment of ASC Eats, we sit down with Fukuryu Ramen owner and psychology alumnus Jeff Tsao ’99, whose restaurant both celebrates and puts a modern twist on ramen's traditional Japanese roots.

Japanese Coast Guard officer, hero to Japan
Michael Azarraga (azarragamichael) YouTube channel link:
The video taken by the Japanese Coast Guard of the Chinese fishing vessel purposely ramming the Japanese patrol boat was withheld by the government. However it was leaked, posted on YouTube and televised all over the Japanese television media.
The Japanese government was determined to locate how leaked this video and punish him for doing so. The government confiscated Google Japan (Google owns YouTube) to determine the IP address of the person.
No need to look any further. Chief Mate Masaharu Isshiki of the Japanese Coast Guard, patrol boat Uranami PC24, (5th Sea Area Coast Guard Kobe Headquarters) confessed to his office that he leaked the video. He released it at an Internet café in Kope, Japan, where he created the YouTube channel Sengoku38 SGK38.
People all across Japan view Chief Mate Isshiki as a national hero, a 21st century Samurai, a modern day Choshu Five. If the pressure becomes too unbearable from the government, perhaps Mr. Isshiki should come to the United States where people who lead government documents are heroes as it has become a national sport.

Japanese Breakfast with ONLY Convenience Store Food Items!
For our final Japan video, we go to 7 Eleven to see what kind of Japanese breakfast we can put together using only convenience store food items! The strangest breakfast item might have to be the hot dog bun with sweet bean paste (whaaat?), but there some familiar items too. Also, for those of you wondering, why so many convenience store videos?! Well, we were in Kyoto in the middle of July and it got so hot that we could barely set foot outside. So, air-conditioned convenience stores became a bit of a haven where we could grab a quick meal without venturing too far. ;)
This is our final convenience store video from Japan where we highlighted 7-11, Lawson and Family Mart Japanese food items that you can have for breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or snacks. To be honest Japanese Convenience stores are a way of life in Japan. The number of locals and travelers utilizing convenience stores in Japan for quick pickups and meals is more than any other country we've ever visited.
Have you visited Japan before? What was your favorite Japanese convenience store out of the three biggest ones (7-11, Lawson and Family Mart)? Have you ever had a convenience store meal for breakfast before? What did you get for breakfast? Let us know in the comments section below.

Japanese Breakfast with ONLY Convenience Store Food Items!
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel, we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world. Our most recent trip was to Japan where we spent 2 months travelling around the country and visiting the following destinations: Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Nikko, Takayama, Yokohama, Odaiba, Shirakawa-gō and Takao.
During our stay, we visited a mixture of big cities and small rural towns, where we enjoyed eating Japanese street food, trying traditional Japanese cuisine, visiting local attractions and staying in unique accommodations (such as capsule hotels and ryokans) that we are now going to share with you on this channel. The combination and contrast of visiting futuristic cities and traditional countryside areas is what makes travel to Japan so fascinating. Ultra modern versus traditional. This is the essence of Japan.
Our trip to Japan was unforgettable and until now it is one of our favourite countries that we have come to know. However, we only feel as though we just scratched the surface on this trip to Japan. If you want to see more videos from Japan in the future, let us know in the comments that places you'd like us to travel to and food experiences you would like to see on this travel channel.
Have you travelled to Japan before? What was your experience like? Please share your Japan travel tips, advice and experiences in the comments below.
