Today marks the seventh anniversary of the death of former South Korean President... Roh Moo-hyun.
Regardless of their current affiliation, big names in politics were united in making time to visit Roh's hometown in Gimhae to remember the late leader.
Shin Se-min takes a look back at his legacy.
It's been seven years,… since the former President Roh Moo-hyun has passed.
Roh, who prided himself as being a clean politician,... committed suicide,... jumping off the cliff of a mountain near his retirement home in Bongha Village ,… in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do Province,… some 450-kilometers south of the capital Seoul.
He was 62-year-old.
Marking the anniversary of his passing,… rival political parties gathered in Bongha... a move seen not only to remember the late president, but also to promote harmony among a new school of political leaders.
Roh Moo-hyun rose up from his impoverished background to become human rights and labor lawyer.
He entered politics in 1988 after being invited by former President Kim Young-sam to help carry the Democratic Reunification Party,… now known as the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea.
In 2009,... a year after he left office, Roh faced public scrutiny over a corruption scandal involving members of his family.
The former president was questioned by prosecutors on allegations that he received bribes from a businessman through his wife and other close relatives.
While he denied such claims,… the former president made a very public apology to the Korean people, expressing regret for garnering such attention and disappointing the nation.
The political maverick turned president who served office from 2003 to 2008, is still remembered to this day, by many, as a upstanding leader who worked to fight corruption and bolster Korea's fledgling democracy.

노무현 서거 10주기...봉하마을에 추모객 발걸음 이어져
Tomorrow marks the tenth anniversary of former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun's passing.
To commemorate the day,... many are visiting Bongha Village where the liberal president was laid to rest.
Our Park Hee-jun reports from the village.
It's been almost a decade since the passing of former president Roh Moo-hyun.
Roh served as the 16th president of South Korea from 2003 to 2008.
Now-President Moon Jae-in was his presidential chief of staff and longtime friend.
Roh took his own life while being investigated for bribery allegations in 2009.
At Bongha Village near Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do Province,... the late president's hometown and resting place,... there are endless visitors who don't want to let go of his memory.
I still can't believe it's been ten years. I still have the memories from when he was alive. I came here to relieve some of my emotional burden.
I still feel tears coming out. Commoners like us liked a world where we could say what we wanted to say. That was possible because we had someone like him.
Even his private residence is full of visitors, to mark the tenth anniversary.
Roh used to greet guests a dozen times a day.
Although he can no longer do so,... the residence has been open to the public since May last year.
Tracing his course of life at his home, I can experience what kind of life he lived.
And to mark the tenth anniversary of his passing, a memorial event will be held here at his grave on Thursday the 23rd. Around five-thousasnd people are expected to attend the ceremony,... to remember and honor the late president Roh Moo-hyun.
Among the attendees is former U.S. President George W. Bush Roh's counterpart during his term.
Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon and National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang will also attend the event.

Memorial service for Roh Moo-hyun held at Bongha Village
오늘 ‘노무현 10주기’ 추도식…부시 전 대통령 추도사
Today marks the tenth anniversary of former President Roh Moo-hyun's death.
A commemorative ceremony was held this afternoon in Bongha Village in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do Province,... which is the late president's final resting place.
For more, our Park Hee-jun is at Bongha village.
Hee-jun, tell us more about today's event.
Devin.
The memorial for former President Roh Moo-hyun ended about an hour ago.
As you mentioned, it was held at Roh's hometown of Bongha Village.
Organized by the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation,... it was held under the theme 'new Roh Moo-hyun'.
Thousands from all across the nation gathered to remember and honor the late president.
And among the attendees... was former U.S. President George W. Bush.
It was the first time a former U.S. president attended a memorial service for a former South Korean president.
Bush's two terms in the Oval Office overlapped with Roh’s presidency from 2003 to 2008.
Demonstrating their close friendship,... the former U.S. president delivered a eulogy.
He described Roh as a kind and strong leader.
He also said that South Korea-U.S. relations took great steps forward under their leadership,... because they shared the importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties.
Bush even delivered a portrait of Roh to the late former leader's family a portrait the former U.S. president had painted himself.
Take a listen.
I painted a kind and sympathetic man. I painted a man who respected the fundamental rights of all citizens. And today, I pray that his vision for human rights in Korea will extend North across the border. I painted a strong leader who was not afraid to speak his mind, even to the president of the United States.
The two former leaders evidently had a special relationship.
And Roh also appears to still be well-loved by the people, judging by the size of the crowd.
You're right.
You can really tell how much he was admired by the turnout today...
More than 17-thousand people attended,... according to the organizers a record number.
It's been exactly a decade,... since Roh's sudden death in 2009,... which caused grief nationwide.
Roh is remembered mostly for his efforts to improve people's lives.
He also endlessly tried to challenge the regionalism and authoritarianism rooted in the country.
And such drives are still ongoing,... as many parts of his vision are mirrored by now-President Moon Jae-in,... who was Roh's presidential chief of staff and longtime friend.
I think he's an admirable person. He could have taken an easier road, but he chose to take a difficult road in life.
I always thought I needed to come at least once, so I made up my mind and came here from Seoul with the help of my friends.
People have been paying tribute nationwide, all throughout the week.
And especially today, the ceremony in Bongha Village,... was an opportunity for them to band together to build the society envisioned by Roh,... a society for the people.
That's all I have for now.
Back to you, Devin.

Memorial service held to commemorate eighth anniversary of death of late president Roh Moo-hyun

From a leader that enraged the people of Korea and fuelled public distrust in the government, we turn our spotlight to a former president who is loved, respected and celebrated long after his passing.
A commemorative ceremony was held on this, the eighth anniversary of Roh Moo-hyun's passing.
What makes this year's service extra meaningful... is this:
The man who served with him in the last liberal administration that looked up to him as a friend and mentor attended the event, as the new President of South Korea.

Visitors who came to honor the late president,... expressed their enthusiasm and hope for the new administration.
It feels great to be here. I don't have great hopes for the new government. I just hope it keeps up what it's been doing for the past two weeks.
I've come to every memorial, but this time it feels extra special after President Moon Jae-in's victory. I cry every year, and even more this year, but today they're tears of joy and enthusiasm.

Former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun has died, a police official said on Saturday, after a fall while mountain climbing. A news report said a suicide note was found.
The official at the National Police Agency said that the exact cause of death was pending the result of an autopsy.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to media.
Police were trying to confirm whether the fall was an accident or if he possibly committed suicide, Yonhap news agency reported.
A family lawyer told South Korean media that the former President left a brief suicide note.
News reports quote Moon Jae-in as telling reporters in Busan on Saturday that the 62-year-old Roh died from a fall in the mountains behind his home in southern South Korea.
The former leader suffered severe head injuries and died after being transported from his hometown of Gimhae to a hospital in the southern city of Busan, Yonhap said.
Roh had been under investigation over allegations that he took more than 6 (m) million US Dollars from a businessman while in office.
The bribery scandal involving Roh and his family had tainted his image as a clean politician in a country with a long history of corruption.
He was questioned by prosecutors in Seoul last month as part of the probe.
Roh, a former human rights lawyer who served as South Korea's president from 2003 to 2008, was known for pushing reconciliation efforts with rival North Korea, and travelled to Pyongyang in 2007 for a summit meeting with leader Kim Jong Il.

Former President Roh Moo-hyun, embroiled in a broadening corruption scandal, died from a fall on Saturday in the mountains behind his rural southern home.
He left behind a suicide note, his lawyer said.
Roh, 62, had been hiking in the mountains in the village of Bongha.
He was rushed from his hometown of Gimhae to Busan National University Hospital early on Saturday. He died around 9:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) of external head injuries, hospital officials in Busan said.
The former president left a brief suicide note for his family, lawyer Moon Jae-in told reporters at the hospital.
Investigators have not seen the note, a Busan police official said. He did not give his name, citing department policy.
President Lee Myung-bak called Roh's death tragic, presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan said.
Roh, a former human rights lawyer, served as president from 2003 and 2008, campaigning as a clean politician in a country with a long history of corruption.
But he and his family have been ensnared in recent weeks in a burgeoning bribery scandal.
Last month, state prosecutors questioned Roh for some 13 hours about allegations that he accepted more than 6 (m) million US Dollars in bribes from a South Korean businessman while president, accusations that deeply shamed Roh.
Roh, a former human rights lawyer who served as South Korea's president from 2003 to 2008, was known for pushing reconciliation efforts with rival North Korea, and travelled to Pyongyang in 2007 for a summit meeting with leader Kim Jong Il.

STORYLINE
Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Busan, South Korea, late Thursday morning where he is to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Hu earlier spoke to the South Korean National Assembly, in Seoul, promising a strengthened relationship between the two nations.
Hu said on Thursday that China would support all moves that led to peace and security in the Korean Peninsula.
Hu and his South Korean counterpart, Roh Moo-hyun, agreed at a summit on Wednesday to step up joint efforts to dismantle North Korea's nuclear programmes, saying their economies would flounder if they failed to do so.
The latest round of Beijing negotiations on the denuclearisation ended on Friday with no sign of progress.
The nuclear talks - which involve China, Japan, Russia, the United States, and the two Koreas - took place after Hu made a rare trip to North Korea last month and won a pledge from leader Kim Jong Il on his commitment to the negotiations.
China is North Korea's last major ally and a key supplier of food and other aid for the impoverished communist state.
Beijing shares the goal of a non-nuclear North Korea with other participants in the negotiating process, but it also recognises the North's security concerns.
Before his speech, Hu met with Korea's Prime Minister Lee Hae Chan.
He will address a CEO summit that is officially endorsed by APEC in the afternoon on Thursday.
There is much anticipation about what he might tell business leaders about China's plans for revaluing their currency, securing oil supplies and negotiating bilateral free trade agreements.
China has increased cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Hu has expressed great satisfaction with China's flourishing ties with South Korea, saying the relationship has entered the best-ever era.
The two countries - which fought each other during the 1950-53 Korean War - forged diplomatic ties in 1992.
Relations have since made great strides, with China overtaking the US as South Korea's biggest trade partner. is now South Korea's largest trading partner and has signed several free trade agreements with Australia.
Bird flu was also expected to be high on the agenda for the summit talks.
China reported its first human infections - including one fatality - on the mainland on Wednesday. Health workers were rushing to inoculate billions of chickens.
