The Queen of the Pacific Hikawa Maru - Japan History Museum
Hikawa Maru and her sisters ran a regular liner route between Yokohama, Vancouver and Seattle. She had a reputation for service that combined splendid food and beautiful art deco interiors, and she was nicknamed The Queen of the Pacific.
NYK Line underwrote her restoration, which began in August 2007. She was renamed NYK Hikawamaru and was reopened to the public at Yamashita Park on 25 April 2008.

This video documents a day in Yokohama city in Japan where I visited the Hikawamaru ship with my family in the morning and then met my sister for a spin in Yodobashi the tech Mecca of Japan in the evening. This visit was from Februaury 5th till February 15th 2017. This footage was shot on February 10th 2017.

Hikawa Maru is a Japanese ocean liner that Yokohama Dock Company built for Nippon Yūsen Kabushiki Kaisha. She was launched on 30 September 1929, made her maiden voyage from Kobe to Seattle on 13 May 1930. She is permanently berthed as a museum ship at Yamashita Park, Naka-ku, Yokohama.

Yokohama has historically been the gateway for ships between Japan and the outside world. Therefore it is natural that several museums in Yokohama are dedicated to the shipping industry.
One of the more spectacular examples is the museum ship Hikawa Maru located next to the Yamashita Park. The Hikawa Maru is an old cruise ship and a rare survivor of WWII. It was launched in 1929 and has sailed between Japan and USA. After the war she sailed again to USA until decommissioned in 1960.
After many years as restaurant and hotel she has now finally been restored to her original state with a new owner (NYK Line) in 2008 and is now a museum ship only, showing how life was on a cruise ship in the good old days.
It was really a rare, spectacular and special experience. If you come to Yokohama see this ship.

Yokohama was the first place I visited in Japan in 1953 (see the vid of my cruise from Hong Kong to Japan), so did many travelers before me when their cruise ship arrived. They sent picture postcards like these to their friends. They show us a world that has disappeared completely.

히카와마루는 옛날부터 많은 여객을 실어나르던 옛날배입니다. 내부 시설들도 상당히 앤틱합니다.

Парк Ямасита - самый старый портовый парк Японии - протянулся от международного пассажирского терминала вдоль береговой линии почти на километр. Отсюда открывается потрясающий вид на залив и мост Yokohama Bay Bridge. Пришвартованный напротив парка Ямасита круизный пассажирский лайнер класса люкс - Хикава-мару («Hikawa-maru»), известный также под названием Королева Тихого Океана, выходил в море 30 лет - с 1930 по 1960 год. Hikawa maru is a cargo-passenger liner that was built in 1930 for the Japan-Seattle line by NYK line.
Around the 1920s, there were growing calls in Japan for building its own high-grade ships in order to compete with the large ships introduced by Europe and the United States. Hikawa maru was a state-of-the-art ship at the time it was built.During World War II, Hikawa maru was set up as a navy hospitals ship. The ship struck mines on the three separate occasions before the war ended but avoided being sunk. After the war. It was refitted as a cargo-passenger ship and resumed service on the Seattle line in 1953. Having been in service for 30 years. Hikawa maru made 254 voyages across the Pacific Ocean and carried more than 25.000 passengers in total during its lifetime. Since 1961, the ship has been kept at Yamashita park, where it has become a popular attraction visited by many people over many years. Hikawa maru was temporarily closed for refurbishing in 2006 and reopened to the public in 2008 as NYK Hikawamaru.Being the only surviving cargo-passenger liner built in Japan before World War II and having earned a high reputation as a valuable industrial heritage that preserves shipbuilding technology and inboard interior decoration, the ship was designated as a nationally important cultural property in 2016.

The first seaside park in Japan located right in front of Yokohama Port, stretching almost 700 meters from the east side of Osanbashi to Yamashita Pier. It was opened in 1930 by land filling with the rubbles from the Great Kanto Earthquake.
The park includes a grass field, a rose garden, the Little Girl With Red Shoes On statue, the Guardian of Water statue which is a gift from San Diego, a sister city of Yokohama, and the Kamome no Suihei-san (Seagull Sailor) song monument, water stairs and a stage. The former cargo and passenger ship Hikawamaru is anchored here.

You can walk to the beautiful Yamashita Park from Red Brick Warehouse around 20 minutes thru the Yamashita Rinko Line Promenade and enjoy beauttiful Yokohama Bay scenery. You can take the Seabass ferry across the bay and view the beautiful Yokohama Bay Bridge. The main attractions around this area are the Hikawa Maru museum ship and the Yokohama Marine Tower. The next destination will be China town which took around 10 minutes from Yokohama Marine Tower using the subway station underground tunnel.
