More indictments for crimes committed during Rwanda's genocide are due to be announced Monday.

An estimated 500-thousand people were killed in the bloodbath that swept the central African nation in 1994.

Later this week there will be a mass reburial of the remains of those massacred in the town of Kibuye.

It is a picturesque church, but here one of the worst atrocities of Rwanda's killing sprees took place.

The priest at the Urusengero Roman Catholic church in the town of Kibuye was massacred along with as many as 800 Tutsis when Hutu militia attacked the building in 1994.

Inside the evidence is all too clear.

Outside the mass grave where most of the bodies were buried.

They have now been unearthed by an international forensic team collecting evidence for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda - the body that will indict and try those responsible for the genocide.

The living witnesses have been telling their stories for two years, the dead have a story to tell they have not told their story yet. We are here to interpret that story and allow the dead to tell that story. That grave back there is an echo chamber for what the living have had to say and the living and the dead are telling the same story. The evidence we collect is for other scientists to judge it is there for the world to judge it is there for the court to use and it is a different kind of testimony than the testimony of the living.

Laid out in front of the church the remains of those who were slaughtered.

Amidst the piles are rotting and blood-drenched clothing, jewellery, and a prosthetic leg.

It is hoped that remains can be identified through blood and tissue tests.

The area of Kibuye was home to a large population of ethnic Tutsis before the 1994 campaign that killed an estimated 500-thousand Rwandans, mostly Tutsis.

So far eight people have been indicted for the killings in Kibuye, but trials cannot begin until the suspects are arrested.

Prosecutors hope this will happen in the next few months.

More indictments are expected Monday.

For the friends and families of the victims of the Kibuye church massacre, however, one part of a long painful nightmare will end later this month.

Next Sunday (25 Feb) the bodies will be reburied with full rites in the newly consecrated grave from which they were exhumed.

A memorial ceremony was held in Rwanda on Tuesday (07/04) to some pay homage to 50,000 Tutsis who resisted - and died - as Hutus attacked the hilltop hamlet of Bisesero four years ago. Rwanda's leaders, representatives from the international community and thousands of ordinary people joined the ceremony.
The thousands attending the ceremony - including 35 of the 1,000 or so survivors - climbed a steep track of suffering to the hilltop, where a memorial will be erected. At the entry to a stations of the Cross, a pile of half-decomposed remains fouled the air under the hot sun.
Rwandan President Pasteur Bizimungu and Prime Minister Pierre-Celestin Rwigema laid the first stones of the memorial to the innocent victims of genocide.

Our first road trip in Rwanda. We traveled west from Kigali to Kibuye on Lake Kivu, south to Bisesero, the site of a genocide memorial, and then back to Kigali. In Kibuye, we took a boat trip out to islands in the lake.

Rwanda is a relatively stable East African country, and easily accessible from Kenya and Uganda. It is relatively easy, safe and simple to travel around. Kinyarwanda is the chief spoken language in Rwanda. It is also spoken in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in the south of Uganda (Bufumbira-area). Kinyarwanda is a language of the Bantu linguistic family. It is closely related to Kirundi spoken in the neighboring country Burundi and to Giha of western Tanzania.
English and French are also official languages, and many residents (particularly in urban areas) will speak one or the other in addition to Kinyarwanda.

The Genocide Memorial in Kigali is a good insight into one of the world's greatest tragedies. It's free to walk around but audio guides are $15. The Nyamata Genocide Memorial is a worthwhile complement to the Gisozi Memorial Centre in Kigali. Located in the town of Nyamata, 40 minutes south of Kigali on a newly paved road, the memorial is in a church where over 10,000 people were killed during the 1994 genocide. The Ntarama Genocide Memorial, just 20 minutes away from the Nyamata memorial, is also worth visiting. National Museum of Butare in Huye is the National Museum of Rwanda.

Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda is a large lake bordering the DRC, it's a nice place to relax for a week or so. Parc National des Volcans (Volcanoes National Park) , home of the mountain gorillas, and the setting for Gorillas in the Mist, author Dian Fossey's research. If you can afford it it's an excellent experience, and even possible as a daytrip from Kigali. Nyungwe Forest, in the southwestern region of Rwanda, is one of Africa's oldest and largest protected mountain rainforest.

Testimony from Survivor Fidele Rurangirwa at the Urumuri Rutazima Kwibuka Flame Tour stop in Rutsiro District

The Urumuri Rutazima (Kwibuka Flame) will travel through Rwanda's thirty districts before reaching Kigali on 7 April 2014, the start of the national mourning period.

The flame symbolises remembrance as well as the resilience and courage of Rwandans over the past twenty years. Carried in a simple lamp, it will be used to light other lamps in communities around Rwanda. To mark the 20th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, all memorial fires throughout the country will stem from this single Kwibuka Flame.

On returning to Kigali, President Paul Kagame will use the Kwibuka Flame to light the National Flame of Mourning. This will take place on 7 April 2014, marking the official beginning of the national mourning period. The flame will also be the source of the fire used at the candlelit vigil at Amahoro Stadium on the evening of 7 April 2014.
