Mount Kasagi (笠置山) in Sōraku-gun, Kyoto-fu, is home to the Kasagi-dera (笠置寺) temple complex. It is a little out of the way, but then a place filled with history, rocks and boulders to climb over. During the autumn season its very beautiful and once on top of the mountain, you have a stunning view of the Kizu area. Historically, Kasagi-dera (笠置寺) has a long history. About 2000 years ago, the big rocks of Mount Kasagi (笠置山) were regarded as religious symbols by the people. Years ago, a part of a Yuhi-style stone sword was found in front of one of the big rocks. This particular kind of stone sword was presumed to have been used in the Yayoi Period. During the Nara Period Emperor Shōmu (聖武天皇) went hunting on Mt. Kasagi. He chased a deer and found himself in a dangerous situation, which he eventually escaped by praying to the Buddha. He carved a Miroku Magaibutsu (弥勒磨崖仏) on the surface of a large rock, which served as the main image and origin of Kasagi-dera (笠置寺). Kasagi-dera developed as a training centre for Shugendō (修験道), at the end of the Heian period (平安時代), but was burned down during the Genkō War (元弘の乱). The present main hall and Bishamon-dō (毘沙門堂) were built during the Muromachi period (室町時代). Many must-see spots such as Tainai Kuguri (胎内くぐり) (Passage Through the Uterus) can still be seen here today.
