Bishkek-Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and has a population of about one million people. Bishkek is located in the Chuy Valley, at the northern edge of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, at about 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level.
The first mention of Bishkek was the fortress of Pishpek, constructed in 1825 by the Khanate of Kokand. Pishpek was built to protect caravan routes carrying goods between Tashkent and Lake Issyk-Kul, across the Chuy Valley. After a battle between Russian imperial troops and the Khanate of Kokand in 1860, the fort was destroyed and the area became the edge of the Russian Empire. In 1897, the population of Pishpek was a total of 6,600 people, and rather than being a city, was more like a dusty village of mud houses.
Under Soviet rule, the city developed rapidly. In 1925, Pishpek became the capital of the Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast, the precursor of today’s Kyrgyzstan. In 1926, Pishpek became Frunze, named after the revolutionary and military leader Mikhail Frunze, who was born there. Frunze can still be seen in the city’s airport code - FRU. In 1991, the city was renamed once again, to Bishkek. According to experts, “bishkek” is the stick used for churning mare’s milk for the traditional fermented drink, kumis.
Today, Bishkek is one of the major cities of Central Asia, and is the largest city in Kyrgyzstan. The population numbers over one million, with over 80 nationalities represented. The main language of international communication is Russian, but Kyrgyz and English are very widespread.
Sights Overview
There are several major museums in Bishkek, the most interesting of which are the Historical Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Frunze House Museum. Check out performances by the Opera and Ballet Theater, the Russian and Kyrgyz Drama Theaters, the Bishkek City Drama Theater, and the State Philharmonic. There are also a number of venues where pop musicians play, as well as art exhibitions, music festivals, and plenty of interesting events.
There are plenty of places that showcase Bishkek’s unique history. There are several monuments to Soviet architecture in the city center, including Ala-Too Square, the Historical Museum, Philharmonia, and several monuments, such as a Monument to the Red Guards and a Monument to the Martyrs of the Revolution. Check out other newer monuments to Manas, manaschy (those who recite the Epic of Manas), and to those killed by government violence in 2002 and 2010. Bishkek is also famous for being one of the greenest cities in Central Asia, with Oak Park, Erkindik Boulevard, and Panfilov Park being popular destinations in the summer.

Our visit Bishkek travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums and the city by day. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Bishkek tourism brochure or Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan city tour.
15 things to do in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Greetings from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan! Hello from Central Asia. It is our first time here and we are going to be spending a few days here in the capital. So we're going to take you on a little tour and show you fifteen things to do around Bishkek.
First up, we visited Ala-Too Square, which is the central plaza in Bishkek. While there isn’t much to do here, it’s one of the city’s major landmarks, plus they also have lots of benches and water fountains where you can take a quick break. From there, we crossed the street and made our way over to the State Historical Museum.
Another place you’ll want to visit in Bishkek is the Osh Bazaar. It may not be the biggest in Central Asia, but it’s a bustling maze where you could easily spend a few hours. We had no problems at the market, but we were warned by several locals to ignore the fake police who may ask to see documents and camera permits. So keep that in mind if you encounter them!
It is shopping time. Next up we're at the Osh bazaar and you can find everything here. We're seen fresh produce, snacks, chocolates, clothes. Right behind me we have an entire aisle dedicated to dry cheese balls.
Directly across from the abandoned casino, you’ll find Victory monument which was built to commemorate the 40th anniversary of World War 2. The three curved arcs represent a yurt, and the sculpture of a woman standing near the eternal flame is meant to symbolize her waiting for her husband and sons to return from the war.
We missed the start of opera and ballet season by just a few days, however, if you’re in the city at the right time.
And if you’re craving a short escape from Bishkek, you can always plan a day hike to the nearby mountains with the Trekking Union.
As far as food goes, there’s plenty to sample ranging from grilled meats to dumplings, and noodles to mixed rice, plus there was one drink that really left an impression on us.
With our time in Bishkek winding down, we made a visit to Oak Park which is full of sculptures, and then we also visited nearby Panfilov Park.
And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bishkek. As you can probably tell from this video, this city is the kind of place that you experience as opposed to ticking off attractions, so it ended up being a fairly relaxing trip after a few busy weeks of travel around Kyrgyzstan. As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do in Bishkek, feel free to share your tips with fellow travellers in the comments section below. See you next time!

Bishkek- Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek, is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic). Bishkek is also the administrative centre of the Chuy Region. The province surrounds the city, although the city itself is not part of the province, but rather a province-level unit of Kyrgyzstan.
In 1991 the Kyrgyz parliament changed the capital's name to Bishkek.Bishkek is situated at an altitude of about 800 meters (2,600 ft), just off the northern fringe of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, an extension of the Tian Shan mountain range. These mountains rise to a height of 4,855 meters (15,928 ft) and provide a backdrop to the city. North of the city, a fertile and gently undulating steppe extends far north into neighboring Kazakhstan. The Chui River drains most of the area. Bishkek is connected to the Turkestan-Siberia Railway by a spur line.
Bishkek is a city of wide boulevards and marble-faced public buildings combined with numerous Soviet-style apartment blocks surrounding interior courtyards. There are also thousands of smaller privately built houses, mostly outside the city centre. Streets follow a grid pattern, with most flanked on both sides by narrow irrigation channels, watering innumerable trees to provide shade in the hot summers.
State Historical Museum, located in Ala-Too Square, the main city square.
State Museum of Applied Arts, containing examples of traditional Kyrgyz handicrafts
Frunze House Museum
Statue of Ivan Panfilov in the park near the White House.
An equestrian statue of Mikhail Frunze stands in a large park (Boulevard Erkindik) across from the train station.
The train station was built in 1946 by German prisoners of war and has survived since then without further renovation or repairs; most of those who built it perished and were buried in unmarked pits near the station.
The main government building, the White House, is a huge, seven story marble block and the former headquarters of the Communist Party of the Kirghiz SSR
At Ala-Too Square there is an independence monument where the changing of the guards may be watched.Osh bazaar, west of the city centre, is a large, picturesque produce market.
A Tourist's Guide to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan 2019

-Manas Square

Bishkek, City Walk - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
We start our city walk in Bishkek at the city hall in Chuy Avenue. Chuy Avenue is the important cross connection from west to east in Bishkek. The blue gable of the town hall brings invigorating color to the cityscape. To the right is the National Bank. Opposite at the end of the alley is a building of the university. On the right side of a long parkway is the Philarmonic Hall, Toktogul Satylganov. In front of it is a monument of Manas, the Kyrgyz national hero. His stretched arm with the sword as an extension serves the birds as a preferred resting place.
The view back along Chuy Ave shows another building of the University, opposite the National Bank.
In the video, we make a virtual jump one kilometer to the east and are now in front of the White House, the parliament of Kyrgyzstan. The total number of representatives is 129. But, a regulation limits the number of representatives per party to 85. Thus a single party cannot become omnipotent. Despite all efforts to ensure the equal rights of the women, the women are under-represented in the parliament.
To the east of Parliament, the Stela of Nations Friendship stretches towards heaven.
We now reach the center of Bishkek with Ala-Too Square, which is bordered to the north by the National Historical Museum. On the open space in front of it is another monument to the national hero Manas, erected by German prisoners of war, most of whom did not survive. Here is also an impressive flagpole with the flag of Kyrgyzstan. At the roadside of Chuy Avenue, one set up flags and podiums for the upcoming Independence Day.
On the opposite side of Chuy Ave are two huge building blocks surrounded by tent city-like arcades. They house restaurants, shops, and banks. A similar building in the middle with a golden dome on the roof, a bit in the background, houses the Ministry of Agriculture. In front of it stands a monument of the most important Kyrgyz writer and politician Chingiz Aitmatov, whom we got to know already in Cholpon Ata.
The building to the east, the Ministry of Culture and Information, is built in the original architecture of the pre-Soviet era. In eastern direction follows a picture gallery.

Bishkek has by far the best nightlife in the country. Both Russian and European operas and ballets are performed at the State Opera and Ballet Theatre.
The Russian Drama Theatre has Russian-language productions, while the State Academic Drama Theatre stages work in the Kyrgyz language.
The State Philharmonic hosts classical music concerts as well as pop and folklore events. Bishkek also has many discos and nightclubs. These are best approached with caution as drunken attacks on foreigners are not unheard of.
Elsewhere in the country, things are very quiet at night, although some restaurants turn into dancehalls in places like Karakol or Naryn after nightfall.
With Travels Mantra, when you book a flight, you instantly unlock savings on select hotels. So you can find that perfect hotel for your trip, at a perfect price.
