Khejrli village jodhp

Bishnois Of Rajasthan ll Bishnoi Culture ll A Documentary Film ll Jodhpur ll Rajasthan ll
Bishnoism was founded by Guru Jambheshwar (1451-1536), also known as Jambhaji. Some writers have used the term Vishnoi, meaning followers of Vishnu but sect members refer to themselves as Bishnoi, a word they claim is derived from the Rajasthani for twenty (bish) and nine (noi). Jambheshwar himself did not refer to Bishnoi but does mention Vishnu. Adherents are also known as Prahladapanthi because of their devotion to Prahlada, another Hindu deity.[2]
Jambheshwar announced a set of 29 tenets.[2] These were contained in a document called Shabadwani, written in the Nagri script, which consists of 120 shabads. Of his 29 tenets, ten are directed towards personal hygiene and maintaining good basic health, seven for healthy social behaviour, and four tenets to the worship of God. Eight tenets have been prescribed to preserve bio-diversity - although most adherents are unaware of that, or such things as global warming, as a concept[2] - and encourage good animal husbandry. These include a ban on killing animals and felling green trees, and providing protection to all life forms. The community is also directed to see that the firewood they use is devoid of small insects. Wearing blue clothes is prohibited because the dye for colouring them is obtained by cutting a large quantity of shrubs.
Khejarli massacre
The Bishnoi narrate the story of Amrita Devi, a member of the sect who inspired as many as 362 other Bishnois to go to their deaths in protest of the cutting down of Khejri trees in September 1730. The maharajah of Jodhpur, Abhay Singh, requiring wood for the construction of a new palace, sent soldiers to cut trees in the village of Khejarli, which was called Jehnad at that time. Noticing their actions, Devi hugged a tree in an attempt to stop them. Her family then adopted the same strategy, as did other local people when the news spread. She told the soldiers that she considered their actions to be an insult to her faith and that she was prepared to die to save the trees. The soldiers did indeed kill her and others until Abhay Singh was informed of what was going on and intervened to stop the massacre.[6][7]
Some of the 363 Bishnois who were killed protecting the trees were buried in Khejarli, where a simple grave with four pillars was erected. Every year, in September, the Bishnois assemble there to commemorate the sacrifice made by their people to preserve their faith and religion.

Rajasthan Taj, Temples and Tigers Tour
Home to some fascinating cities and towns, a plethora of amazing sites and some of the country’s most characterful hotels, there’s little wonder a third of all first time visitors to India travel to Rajasthan. It is quite simply India’s most colourful state. And this tour gives you the best of the major attractions whilst also showing you some of the regions beautiful hidden gems.
The tour starts in Delhi – Although maligned by some, for me Delhi is a fascinating city. A veritable tale of two cities Delhi combines the busy hustle bustle of the dramatic Moghul Old Town – with its narrow alleys, its markets and mosques – with the sublime New Town, where quiet parks and tree lined avenues are peppered by some of the country’s most magnificent architecture.
From Delhi we drive to Agra, to see the essential Taj Mahal before heading on to Ranthambore where you’ll have the best chance possible of sighting tigers in the wild.
And from here we move onto one of the key locations, the state’s capital Jaipur where you’ll have a chance to visit the famous palace of the winds, the city palace, the main market and just out of town, the staggering Amber Fort.
With a fairly busy first week you’ll be pleased to know that the second week of this seminal India tour takes you into some of the regions amazing rural regions where the pace is a good deal slower.
From Jaipur first we’ll visit the religiously important town of Pushkar, home to the country’s only Brahmin temple, which morphs every year into the country’s biggest camel fair. This is a stunning time to visit Pushkar when the town comes alive with various local people coming to buy and sell their wares.
From Pushkar the next stop is here, the desert town of Jodhpur.
Home to what is arguably the states most impressive fort, you’ll also have plenty of time to wander the vegetable market and the famous blur quarter before we head on into the countryside.
And for this is the highlight of the trip. Rajasthan’s towns and cities are certainly impressive, packed with fabulous architecture and fascinating monuments. But for me it is in the countryside that soul of Rajasthan comes alive. And here we’ll stay at some of the region’s most impressive palace hotels. As home to the former royals this is where the romance of the land of kings can be found.
First stop is here Rawla Bhenswara.
Set in the heart of the Rabari tribal region this is a wonderful place to stay for a few days where you can not only learn about the remote agricultural way of life but also go on night time leopard safaris.
From Bhenswara we head to Marwar Junction to pick up the Kipling Train – a narrow gauge regional stopper, immortalised in Kipling’s famous short story the Man Who Would Be King – on a short journey through the spectacular Khamli Ghats to our next palace hotel, Rawla Jojowar.
And from Jojowar our next stop is here, the wonderful Castle Bijaipur.
As a regular feature on many Wild Frontiers trips, Castle Bijaipur is a stunning former palace now heritage hotel with the main building dating back the 17th century. It has a number of lovely rooms, a swimming pool and from here we can ride the famous Marwari horses, or the castles bikes, or just go for walks or jeep safaris through the stunning countryside, where we can learn about the rural way of life.
And having visited the famous Chittorgarh Fort – one of the largest forts in the country – we end the tour in the beautiful lake side town of Udaipur.
Udaipur was voted the most romantic city in the country. And will its narrow streets, its abundance of characterful haveli hotels, its great dining options, shopping and of course its stunning lake, we feel Udaipur is the perfect place to end this fascinating tour.
Of course there are many group trips out there to this colourful part of India. But in our opinion none better combine the highlights of the region with some of its hidden gems than our Taj, Temples and Tigers Tour.
