BISMARCK KOA Bismarck North Dakota
Bismarck KOA is an easy off/on from I-94. Don't be surprised if you decide to stay longer than planned at this family-friendly park. The TLC that goes into this KOA Kampground is evident the moment one drives through the security gate. Brightly colored flower plantings and baskets greet the registering traveler...and a warm greeting from the staff team makes one feel you're home. There are plenty of options to choose from for parking big rigs (though reservations are highly recommended). For those who prefer no trees, that option is available while other sites provide privacy hedges, and mature trees provide a welcome shade during the summer. The expansive tenting area is beautifully maintained and feels secluded enough to say you're in the woods. KOA Kabins are available to accommodate those who prefer less of a roughing it experience.
There is a lot to do without leaving the campground: A beautiful swimming pool is located in front of the gift shop and convenience store. Relax at a poolside patio table or under shade and brightly potted hanging baskets. Make your own ice cream sundae every evening. Take advantage of the Bar-B-Q ribs and brisket prepared slow-cook style - sure to make you show up every Friday & Saturday evening it's served. Yummm! Better tell the office staff you'll be there at dinnertime! There's also a great tennis and basketball court, horseshoes and a kiddy playground.
The Bismarck area is rich in history. At Fort Abraham Lincoln, a key infantry and cavalry post in the 1800s, tour General George Custer's home. Depart from the Port of Bismarck for a Missouri River cruise in a classic paddlewheel riverboat. About 40 miles north of the capital city is the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and re-created Fort Mandan. You'll discover how local Native Americans helped the men survive the brutal winter of 1804-05. Also visit Knife River Indian Villages nearby. Make Bismarck KOA your destination point.

Custer's Gulch RV Park in Custer South Dakota
We camped here in our 5th wheel in August of 2011. The park was very nice and scenic. I loved all the rocky peaks. We stayed here for a couple of weeks to give us time to take in all the attractions of the area. The park is located about 3 miles from the town of Custer and a mile from Custer State Park. I spent much time exploring the surrounding hills and woods. There are over a hundred miles of bike trails that are accessible from the park entrance. The utilities were excellent and the WiFi was adequate. Also our Verizon MiFi worked very well. Unfortunately our AT&T service was weak. Overall, I highly recommend the park.

Enjoy leisurely walks along extensive hiking trails throughout the park or climb the summit of Harney Peak, the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. At the top is a breathtaking vista of granite peaks carpeted with evergreens and aspens.
Park visitors love kayaking, canoeing and paddleboating in the refreshing mountain lakes. The park offers horseback riding, Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours, chuck wagon suppers, gold panning demonstrations, fishing, naturalist programs and much more. Truck Camping at Sheridan Lake, Black Hills South Dakota 4K
A quick camping trip up to Sheridan Lake was the perfect way to start the weekend for Sarah and I. Just several weeks prior when we went camping with a couple of friends, the lake was covered in ice and people were still ice fishing. This week, there was zero ice remaining as it looks like spring is finally here to stay for the Black Hills!

Custer State Park, SD.
Custer State Park is one of the most pristine and interesting parks in the country. It puts many National Parks to shame in my opinion. It is home to every kind of outdoor activity you can think of with 9 campgrounds and 4 specialized campgrounds. There are lakes for fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. There are miles and miles of scenic trails to hike. There are resorts, lodges, stores and organized activities. Everything is spotless. It is also home to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. As you drive through the park on the various scenic roads, there are abundant turnouts to allow viewing and photography. There are some extremely narrow tunnels that are an adventure to navigate through as you cruise the park. Everywhere you look there are accommodations of one sort or another and everything is first class. My favorite part of this massive 71,000 acre park is the fact that it is not over-run by hundreds of tour buses filled to capacity with European tourists (the biggest complaint I have with our National Parks). This video features the Wildlife Loop Road starring what are called the begging burros. They are quite cute and seem to love carrots. Another thing we really liked about our visit to this area was the extreme friendliness of the locals everywhere we went. It was contagious with everyone making eye contact, smiling and making conversation. What a refreshing experience compared to many of the National Parks where I seldom hear English spoken.
Black Hills Camping.
2010RoadTripUSA. Part 40. Black Hills Camping. August 2010. Music by Umiliani.
The Black Hills are a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming. Set off from the main body of the Rocky Mountains, the region is something of a geological anomaly—accurately described as an island of trees in a sea of grass. The Black Hills encompass the Black Hills National Forest and are home to the tallest peaks of continental North America east of the Rockies.
The name Black Hills is a translation of the Lakota Pahá Sápa. The hills were so-called because of their dark appearance from a distance, as they were covered in trees.
Native Americans have a long history in the Black Hills. After conquering the Cheyenne in 1776, the Lakota took over the territory of the Black Hills, which became central to their culture. When European Americans discovered gold there in 1874, as a result of George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition, erstwhile miners swept into the area in a gold rush; the US government re-assigned the Lakota, against their wishes, to other reservations in western South Dakota. Unlike the rest of the Dakotas, the Black Hills were settled by European Americans primarily from population centers to the west and south of the region, as miners flocked there from earlier gold boom locations in Colorado and Montana.
