Vietnamese Countryside Tour & Vietnamese Meal at Tra Que Herb Village Water Wheel Hoi An, Vietnam
We've thoroughly enjoyed spending most of our days exploring Ancient Hoi An; however, when we had a chance to bike out to the Vietnamese countryside to visit Tra Que Village for dinner at restaurant noted for its water wheel, we couldn't pass on the opportunity. One of the main highlights of being based in Hoi An are all of the nearby attractions and places worth visiting, such as farmland, small communities and several beaches. Tra Que is a quaint little village situated only 2 kilometers from the Ancient part of Hoi An city. It is famed for producing rich soil praised for its abilities to grow fresh herbs. Many tourists end up staying overnight in this village to experience the lifestyle of a rural farming community.

Given that it was a decent distance from our guest house, we decided to hop on our bicycles and head over to the community before sunset. As we pedaled along, we noticed the transition from commercial areas to farmland was very abrupt and we marveled at the Vietnamese farmers wearing conical hats tending their crops. Finally, after getting lost a few times, we pulled up to Tra Que Herb Village Water Wheel restaurant.
Walking down a path that was in between crops we eventually approached the large water wheel noticing its rustic charms.
Before we sat down to eat traditional Vietnamese cuisine we had the opportunity to actually operate the large water wheel by climbing up a set of stairs, sitting down and pedaling with our feet. It was such a thrill getting to actually set the behemoth rustic wheel in motion.
The meal itself featured some of our favorite dishes including Vietnamese country pancakes and papaya salad along with a new dish we'd never tried before - three friends.
The service was excellent as our hosts we both gracious and ever welcoming. We kicked ourselves for not coming here sooner because we certainly would have frequented this restaurant on more than one occasion.
The meal itself was a knockout; it was literally the best food we've had since arriving in Vietnam.
What made the dishes so appealing were the fresh ingredients being used from the farm along with excellent cooking technique which included very scant use of cooking oil.
Every bite was packed with an explosion of flavors and we appreciated that all of the ingredients were fresh from the organic garden. This is how food ought to prepared everywhere.
After finishing the generous portions offered to us, we bicycled back into Hoi An while experiencing a gorgeous sunset. Overall, this was an experience we'll never forget and if we're back in Hoi An again we plan on making it a part of our daily routine. Thus, we highly recommend you check out the countryside area of Tra Que:

Vietnam trip 2019: Week 3 - Floating market, fish sauce factory, Tree temple, & street snacks
Good mooooorning, Vietnam! This week we travel to the biggest little city of Can Tho, Vietnam. We take a boat off the Ninh Kieu pier and surf the waves to check out the floating market where people live, sell, and run their world on the water. We then check out a fish sauce factory and learn about the popular sexy lady snack! After a quick bite and history lesson, we rent bikes to ride through the country side to a temple where a family of 6 generations have been caring for a tree for 160+ years because they believe there's a nature God that lives and provides health and luck for them. Then to finish the trip, we always gotta have a bit of street food!!

STREET FOOD in Vietnam is cheap and easy. Saigon 2015.
When my college buddy Mike traveled to Vietnam and Asia for the first time, I made sure to introduce him to street food and riding a motorbike around Saigon. What's better than to combine the two on a hot day? Street Food Drive-Thru! Well, in Vietnam, you can just ride up to any vendors and tell them exactly what you want without leaving your motorbike. First, we tried some classic banh mi heo quay or roasted pork sandwiches, then an assortment of juicy and fresh fruit off of the side of the road, and for dessert, I bought some banh trang tron, which is a rice paper mango salad of sorts with all sorts of ingredients in it. This was filmed primarily in the Trung Son area of Binh Chanh. In the end, we went back to my apartment and sampled these great street food items. So if you're in town, make sure you get a bike and try drive-thru street food here in Vietnam.
Check out Mike's first day in Vietnam:

Street Food Tour in DALAT NIGHT MARKET 2018 | VIETNAMESE FOOD
Dalat's Night Market is a great place to visit for a night out on the town, people watching, and STREET FOOD. Watch us try some awesome BBQ skewers, the famous Dalat Pizza which is more like a quesadilla, French-style bread with hot corn and soy milk, and some simple strawberries with sugar and syrup.
The town of Dalat is located at 1,500m (5,000ft) above sea level. It's a smaller town compared to others, so there's not much to do in the evenings except visit the night market, eat some awesome local specialties, or hang around the many beautiful park areas.

28.6.09
Vinh Long liegt mitten im Mekong Delta.

Bun Rieu - An Incredibly Delicious Bowl of Crab Noodles in Vietnam
For incredibly delicious bun rieu in Saigon, go here ►
Vietnam is famous for many different noodle dishes, and while last week I covered Hu Tieu Nam Vang, a noodle soup made with mostly pork and organs, today’s video is about a Vietnamese dish called bun rieu (bún riêu). Bun rieu is a crab based noodle soup, that includes pork, tomatoes, tofu, sometimes shellfish, and all sorts of shrimp and crab pastes to flavor it. This was my first time to eat Vietnamese bun rieu, and I have to say that this bowl of noodles was one of the highlight bowl of noodles I ate in Saigon.
First of all, I just want to say thank you to Linh Pham who recommended I try bun rieu at Bún riêu Nguyễn Cảnh Chân, saying it was one of the best in Saigon. Since I wasn’t too far away, one day for and early lunch, I went to check it out. The restaurant was located down a nice side street, not far from the center of Saigon, but tucked away on a tree lined street so it was cool and not nearly as chaotic as other parts of the city. The restaurant had both indoor and outside sidewalk seating, and we chose to grab a table right outside to enjoy the fresh air and the Vietnamese street food atmosphere. The master chef, who was a very friendly man, sat behind the noodles station, which was stacked with all the ingredients necessary for a delicious bowl of bun rieu and a bubbling cauldron of broth, simmering with tomatoes and meatballs and all things good. The aroma was almost unbearably delicious.
After ordering my bowl of bun rieu, it was delivered to our table in just moments, piping hot and smelling incredible. I first tasted the broth, which was a just slightly sweet, nicely sour, and had an amazing crab flavor - yet it wasn’t overpowering - just light and subtle and soothing. After tasting a few bites, I then went to add some condiments that were sitting on the table. Since it was my first time to eat bun rieu, I wasn’t sure exactly what I was doing, but I asked the waitress, and she motioned for me to just start adding things to my bowl, so I did. There was a bowl of a sour sauce, which I think was sour tamarind juice, which I added a few scoops, and then there was some fermented shrimp paste, and added just a bit for flavor - it’s pretty salty and pungent so you don’t need to add too much. Then, since I’m a lover of chili, I added a scoop of crushed chili along with a few squeezes of lime. After giving my bowl of Vietnamese bun rieu a quick stir, I think continued to dig in and happily slurp.
Along with every bowl of noodles you eat in Vietnam, another bonus, something that I always look forward to, are all the fresh green vegetables that accompany. The bun rieu at Bún riêu Nguyễn Cảnh Chân came with bean sprouts, water spinach, banana flower, and then some peppery perilla leaves to top things off. As if my bowl of noodles could not get better, it was even boosted by all the fresh textures and flavors of the vegetables. This was easily one of the most satisfying Vietnamese street food bowls of noodles I had while I was in Saigon, and while I do enjoy just about every type of noodles, this one could easily be my favorite.
For a stunning bowl of bun rieu in Saigon, I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Bún riêu Nguyễn Cảnh Chân
Address: 18/5 Nguyen Canh Chan, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Price: This bowl of bun rieu cost 45,000 VND, a little more expensive than other bowls, but absolutely stacked with protein and high quality.

I took a trip with some locals to the Mekong River while traveling through rural Vietnam. I was in a place called Hồng Ngự.
This is such a cool town. Such a raw and thick culture. At the time of making this video, I have been here for 6 months - in this time, I have seen 3 different tourists. They (we) almost don't exist here. It's amazing. So true. So authentic. I love it!
Be prepared to be stared at endlessly. Many people shout 'hello' to you as you walk around the small town. I have been invited, randomly, to have some beer, or a shot of whiskey, or some chicken parts (yes, parts).

I explored a small town in Southeastern Vietnam near nestled along side of the Mekong River - Hong Ngu. The town, according to google, has a population of about 78k.
A couple of locals wanted to guide me around their town to show me what there was (or wasn't). I had a great time.
I really enjoy witnessing how other cultures live. Their houses, their food, their environment, and even their mindset. It is all very interesting to me.
In this video, I was frisked by a strange man, I witnessed a motorbike accident, and walked through some a large amount of stilt homes full of impoverished families.
Bo Kho - Vietnamese Beef Stew
Bo kho is Vietnamese beef stew. Read more here:
When I was in Saigon, one of the many dishes I wanted to eat was bo kho, or Vietnamese beef stew. After doing some online searching, thanks to Eating Saigon ( I found a restaurant called Bò Kho Út Nhung, and since it was near to many other restaurants I was eating at in the area, one evening I stopped there for lunch.
Bò Kho Út Nhung was a small and home style restaurant, tucked off the main road into a neighborhood down a side street. As soon as we arrived for our bo kho meal, we were greeted by the owner, who was extremely kind and friendly and she made us feel warm and welcome. There were a few tables and chair a few stairs up in the main area of the restaurant, and there were also a few tables lined up outside along the street-side. We chose a table along the street, and it was a nice quiet and friendly place. There were two main ways we could order the beef stew, served in a bowl with banh mi, or baguettes on the side, or served over the top of a bed of noodles - in this case I think yellow egg noodles were one of the most popular choices. I decided to order the version with bread, and Ying my wife decided to go for the version with noodles on the bottom.
The pot of bo kho was sitting at the front of Bò Kho Út Nhung, sort of along the front of the street, on display for everyone to stop in for a bite to eat. I could smell the beef stew as soon as I came around the corner - and I knew I was in the right place - not to mention my hunger grew! The beef stew came with big nuggets of tenderly stewed beef, along with some big chunks of carrots, and whole shallots. The gravy was a little bit tangy, and it was perhaps a tomato base, but it wasn’t very strong tomato - just very light. But the gravy was rich and soothing, but unfortunately the version I ordered was way too greasy with too much oil floating around on top. Anyway, the beef was extremely tasty, and my favorite bites from the bowl of bo kho were the shallots, which were stewed until extremely tender, and when I took a bite, they just melted in my mouth, and burst open with the juices of the stew.
What I loved most about the Vietnamese beef stew is that it was served with all the extra garnishing herbs and vegetables that Vietnamese cuisine is so well known for - sawtooth coriander, cilantro, sweet basil, and Vietnamese coriander, as well as lime wedges, and some extra sauces for more flavor. To me, the extra herbs is what really makes Vietnamese street food so good, and I really liked them along with the bo kho.
The bo kho served with egg noodles, although I didn’t show it on this video, was actually better than the version I ordered that came with bread. For some reason, the egg noodle version included very little oil compared to the version I ordered which was much too greasy. In any case, it was a great experience to eat Vietnamese beef stew at Bò Kho Út Nhung, and the owner was extremely friendly as well.
Again, thank you to for this restaurant recommendation, be sure to check out their site for lots more delicious Vietnamese food suggestions in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).
Address: 109/7 Nguyễn Thiện Thuật, District 3, Saigon
Open hours: The bo kho beef stew is available from 1 pm – 10 or 11 pm, the restaurant is opening the morning, but they serve pho, so if you’re looking for beef stew, come in the afternoon or night
Price: 35,000 VND ($1.62) per bowl, and I thought the portion size was pretty decent.
