Bizen Osafune Japanese Sword
The Japanese sword-crafting region of Osafune in Setouchi city is famous for having one of the longest histories in sword production. Around half of those swords listed by Japan as National Treasures were originally made here. This video introduces briefly the complete process of crafting the blade and key pieces of equipment including the sword case, grip, engraving etc. through interviews with artisans who work at the Bizen Osafune Japanese Sword Museum. I am a potter to make Bizen.
My family lives in Kojima Kurashiki.
Kiln firing is done in spring and autumn of the year twice.
Usually was taking a picture of the burning kiln can not see.
岡山県倉敷市で備前焼窯元 鷲羽窯の秋の窯焚き風景を撮影しました。備前の粘土を使いろくろで一つ一つ挽いて制作します。窯詰めは約１か月かけ穴窯へ詰めてゆきます。作品には一つ一つ藁とボタを置いていき炎の抜け具合を計算しながら詰めてゆきます。約７日間焚き続けた窯の内部は1200°近くにもなります。１０日ほど冷ましてから窯出しをします。丁寧に磨いてやっと商品になります。

The Six Ancient Kilns.
The Six Ancient Kilns is a general term given to
Echizen, Seto, Tokoname, Shigaraki, Tanba and Bizen.
They represent distinguished kilns that began pottery production
in the ancient time and continue to do so until today.
The name was given by the historical pottery researcher,
Fujio Koyama in 1848, and is registered as Japan Heritage in 2017.

日本六古窯は、古来の陶磁器窯のうち、中世から現在まで生産が続く
代表的な6つの窯（越前・瀬戸・常滑・信楽・丹波・備前）の総称です。
昭和23年頃、古陶磁研究家・小山冨士夫氏により命名され、
平成29年「日本遺産」に認定されました。

Japanese town sets ¥500 million goal to bring renowned Japanese sword back ‘home’
The city of Setouchi in Okayama Prefecture, which once flourished as a major producer of Japanese swords, plans to raise through crowdfunding a total of ¥500 million from in and outside the country to bring back “home” a renowned sword called Yamatorige.

Hagi Yaki was created at the end of the 16th century as a gift for the Emperor of Japan . It is one of the most traditional Japanese Crafts . Hagi Pottery is one of the big of three of earthenware products produced in Japan . The other two are Raku Yaki and Karatsu Yaki. They are all utilized in traditional tea ceremonies . In recent years , the process of Hagi Yaki has take on new meaning for some potters who strive to meld tradition and modern art . Hagi Potters deem to share with the world the balance between the physical and spiritual art that is “Hagi Yaki Do” . These classical practioners of Japanese pottery are enthusiastically seeking to pique intrest in their art form .

Ancient Kiln Site
[Anchor Lead]
An ancient kiln site where blue celadon was made has been discovered in Jinan, Jeollabuk-do Province. Experts say the site was probably created before the Goryeo period.

This rural village is located 300 meters above sea level. At the foot of the mountain, numerous pieces of indigo celadon are scattered around an empty site. Many of the pieces are broken saggars that were used to bake high-end celadon. The early kiln site made of bricks has been found to measure 21 meters in length.
[Soundbite] Cho Myung-il(Kunsan Nat'l Univ. Museum) : Brick kilns were the very first kilns to be used in celadon production in Korea.
Experts believe that the site was created during King Gyeonhwon's reign of the late Baekje period, when the kingdom was engaged in vigorous commerce with China's Wuyue Kingdom, the cradle of celadon.
[Soundbite] Kwak Jang-keun(Curator, Kunsan Nat'l Univ. Museum) : If this discovery is found to have something to do with the late Baekje period, it will probably mean that celadon was first produced in Korea much earlier than has been previously thought.
However, more evidence is required, as Goryeo has been regarded as the origin of Korean celadon for more than 100 years since Japanese colonial rule.
[Soundbite] Um Ki-il(Curator, Jinan History Museum) : Research into celadon and kilns still lags behind. If more comprehensive research is conducted, we can find out when the first celadon was produced and how it spread to other regions.
With the discovery of early-period celadon and brick pieces, discussions on whenceladon was first produced on the Korean Peninsula are expected to gain pace.

The Hosho school is one of the five schools of the Yamato Den. They are said to have worked in Takaichi Gori (Gun) of the Yamato Province since ancient times. Kunimitsu, who lived in the mid-Kamakura period around the Koan era (1278-1288), is said to have been the founder of this school. He is also known to have worked under the name of Sadamitsu. Since there are no extant works of this smith remaining, his son and student, Sadamune, is considered to have been the founder of this school. There are numerous works of his remaining today. He worked around the Bunpo era (1317).

Every spring, around 1,000 beautiful cherry blossom trees come into bloom in Maizuru Park.The park has valuable historical significance, with the Korokan Museum, Fukuoka Castle and Heiwadai Baseball Stadium, each symbolizing a different era, being located on site. Kuroda Kanbei, founder of the Kuroda Clan, is said to have named the area where he constructed his castle Fukuoka, after his ancestors' homeland: Bizen-Fukuoka (present-day Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture). Come and enjoy the battlements of Fukuoka Castle lit up amongst the veils of falling cherry blossoms this season, and experience the 400-year history of Fukuoka Castle and Kuroda Kanbei’s vision for the prosperity of Fukuoka.
