The Black Castle - Wicklow Town
This castle ruin stands on a rocky promontory over the sea, at the eastern side of the town. Following the arrival of the Norman’s in 1169 Earl Strongbow was granted the lands along the East Coast. He in turn granted those lands to Baron Maurice Fitzgerald on condition that he build castles for protection.
The Black Castle was constantly under attack from local Chieftains, notably those of the O’Byrne and O’Toole clans and in 1301 they succeeded in totally destroying the castle. There is a fine vantage-point for views over the town and the coast of North Wicklow from the ruins.

The Black Castle and Sammy Seal, Wicklow Town - Ireland
The Black Castle is the dramatic ruins of a stone fortification built on a spectacular sea cliff on the coast of Wicklow town. The first mention of the castle is in 1174 and it's construction is believed to have been commenced by Maurice Fitzgerald, Baron of Naas. In 1645 the castle was attacked and destroyed. There was attempts to rebuild sometime afterwards but it soon fell into disrepair and consigned to ruin.
Today, nothing more than two wall fragments remain of the Black Castle. A hollow image of the castle's former glory.
Don't forget to look out for resident Wicklow Town legend, Sammy the Seal, who appears later in the video.

Black Castle Drinks- Taste of Dublin 2016
Riva and John from Wicklow are the team behind BLACK CASTLE soft drinks. Having lived in London for a number of years they returned with a greater sense of pride for their little island and all it had to offer - the food, the drink, the culture and the laughs!
With experience in the pub industry running through their veins and a love of food, they developed BLACK CASTLE. Named after an infamous castle in their home town, they launched these deliciously grown-up soft drinks in 2015. Created in small batches, they use natural ingredients and playful flavour combinations to create interesting soft drinks inspired by their wild Irish childhood. A kick of spice? A sting of nettle? Their range includes a Spiced RED LEMONADE, a Fiery GINGER BEER and a Berry BRAMBLE STING. You can take a swig straight from the bottle or add a splash to your favourite spirit. It’s your choice. It’s Mischief, Bottled.

The Oxman Of Wicklow
OVER three consecutive winter days at Oxford in the year 1186, the churchman, Gerald of Wales, regaled commoners, knights and scholars with extracts from his new book ' The Topography of Ireland'. In the course of these lectures, Gerald told his audience the tale of the Ox man of Wicklow. Gerald had been in Ireland between April 1185 and early 1186 as part of the retinue of Prince John, lord of Ireland.
Then he visited his Fitzgerald cousins who held extensive lands in east Wicklow.
This would suggest that they first told Gerald of the Ox man.
The story itself seems to date to the period between 1172 and the death of Maurice Fitzgerald in September 1176.
Then it appears that the Ox man (described by Gerald as a man monster) regularly attended Maurice's court which was held at the Black Castle of Wicklow.
Gerald was told that the Ox man had been reputedly fathered by a man in an unnatural union with a cow.
According to Gerald, the creature had a large bald head like that of an ox, while his face was flat and was dominated by two huge eyes.
For a nose, the creature had two orifices that served as nostrils and uttered sounds like the bellowing of a bull.
Apparently, the Ox man took his meals daily with the Fitzgeralds in the hall of the castle.
And instead of hands and feet, the Ox man had cloven hooves, meaning that he had to eat his food by using the clefs of his hooves as hands.
Unfortunately for the Ox man, he was to become an embarrassment to the Irish, leading to them to kidnap and kill him, a fate that Gerald noted he did not deserve.
Whether the Ox man of Wicklow was an individual suffering from a deformity or was a fiction that Gerald created is unknown.
What is certain though is that
Gerald was no friend of the Irish
and was intent on ensuring a best seller.
