PANAMA: BLACK CHRIST OF PORTABELO FESTIVAL
Spanish/Nat
An estimated 90-thousand Catholic faithful have taken part in the annual religious festival of the Black Christ of Portabelo in Panama.
For over a week, the devoted have travelled to the coastal city of Portabelo from all over the country.
The colourful procession is the most important event on the country's religious calendar.
On their knees, many without shoes and carrying crosses - the pilgrims journeyed from miles around.
The coastal city of Portabelo played host this year to an estimated ninety thousand visitors who came to worship the Black Christ of Portabelo.
In their hordes, many crawling, they entered the church for mass and to give thanks.
Many believe the power of Christ has saved them from disease and misfortune.
In gratitude, they come every year to pay penance and to congregate with their fellow believers.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
There's a lot of good and interesting people. They're mostly poor people with lots of problems, desperate people who come to ask for God's help. We live in a difficult world, one that has been practically made for the rich, for a few, and people have to come to God.
SUPER CAPTION: Father Antonio Onega, priest
At the mass, priests asked for peace and for citizens to make the effort to walk with God.
As night fell - the worshipping became more frenzied.
Some slowly crawled through the streets as hot candle wax was dripped over them.
Others continued the journey on bloodied knees.
In their thousands - they joined the procession through the streets carrying candles, photos and gifts.
It is a procession - which in its extremities of exuberance and pain - could only occur but once a year.

STORYLINE:
For the last three centuries, on the night of 21 October, the streets of the small town of Portobelo celebrate the feast of the Black Christ.
More than 60-thousand faithful make the annual pilgrimage to pay homage to the colloquial figure, who is commonly known as the patron saint of criminals.
Some walk the 53 miles (85 kilometres) from Panama City, thousands walk the last 22 miles (35 kilometres) from Sabanitas and many crawl the last mile on hands and knees to worship before El Nazareno - one of the many names given to the Black Christ by locals.
The local San Ignacio church becomes the focal point of the pilgrimage.
People assemble outside before 80 able-bodied men carry the adorned statue, depicting Christ carrying the cross, to begin a four-hour parade through the town.
Nobody knows exactly how or when the Black Christ (El Cristo Negro) arrived in the tiny community of Portobelo.
Some put the date at around 1658.
But there are so many stories of miracles associated with the figure, it brings tens of thousands of pilgrims to visit the Church every 21 October.
Many wear ornate purple robes that are discarded at midnight on the steps of the church when the saint statue is returned and a celebratory mass is given.
The event symbolises penance for wrongdoing or, simply, an expression of faith.
The sick, the troubled and the needy pray before the ornately robed statue of the Black Christ for the miracles they hope to receive.
People come here with the exact intention of paying homage to this Christ, a Christ bearing its cross, with whom people identify with his suffering and pain. They come to offer their gratitude and ask for blessing, said Jose Ortega, the local parish priest who held this year's mass.
The effigy, depicting Christ carrying the cross, normally resides on a podium to the left of the altar, but it is brought out to the centre of the church for the Black Christ Festival.
It is said that if a promise is made during the feast date and not kept there will be severe retribution during the year.

El cielo relampaguea y descarga un torrente de lluvia mientras los fieles sacan en procesión al Cristo Negro de Portobelo en su salida anual por las calles. Experiencia sobrecogedora.
The sky flashes and unloads a flood of rain as the faithful take the Black Christ on procession, on its annual stroll through the streets of Portobelo. An awesome experience.
The Black Christ Portobelo

The Procession of The Black Christ (Very Weird and Strange Must See
The Celebration and honor and tribute to the black Christ is in my opinion a very creepy and weird thing that people here worship and honor, walking miles carrying boxes where this statue sits in as a sacrifice for all the blessings this supposedly saint has done for them throughout the year.
Jeremiah 11:12
“Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.”

Panama's Black Christ Festival - פסטיבל ישו השחור- פנמה
צילום: עידית ברטוב
Beginning around the second week of October up to the week of the 21st when the culmination of the festival begins, community folks are all clad in purple and maroon carrying their offerings in bundles on their heads and backs in preparation for the arrival of the Black Christ statue. It is Panama's most revered religious figure, and the festival is by far the biggest event in Portobelo.
On the day of the festival, mass is called at 6 p.m., and at exactly 8 p.m., about 80 men remove the statue of the Black Christ from the church to begin a four-hour parade for the carnival-like celebration. The men carrying the heavy statue have freshly-shaved heads, wear purple robes and step barefoot to lively music. They believe it is an honor to be chosen to bear the Black Christ. At exactly midnight on the same day, the statue is returned to the church on the sore shoulders and aching muscles of the same noble men.
