The head of the provincial government in Leon, Spain was gunned down on Monday in what appears to be an act of personal vengeance.
Isabel Carrasco from Spain's governing People's Party was attacked as she walked from her home to party headquarters at 5:30 p.m. local time. Witnesses report that a woman fired shots and killed Carrasco while she was crossing a footbridge over the Bernesga River in an area full of people and kids.
Police detained a mother, 55, and a women, 35, in connection with the shooting. The two women are reportedly the wife and daughter of a police chief inspector in the nearby town of Astorga. The daughter had recently lost her job at the provincial government.
Everything points to it being an act of vengeance unrelated to her public position, a spokeswoman for the Spanish interior ministry said in a BBC report.
The region declared three days of mourning for Carrasco. About 200 residents and local politicians, including the Mayor of Leon, Emilio Gutierrez, gathered at the crime scene to pay their respects.
This shooting takes place in the final of weeks of campaigning before the May 25th European Parliament elections.

Police Kill Dog - New Footage (Graphic Video)
The Police Department in Hawthorne, Calif., has released additional footage of one of its officers shooting a Rottweiler while police handcuffed the dog's owner.
The most recent video shows the police officer unsuccessfully trying to grab the dog, named Max, before it lunged at the police officer. The first video, uploaded to YouTube on July 1, showed the police handcuffing 52-year-old Leon Rosby as Max barked furiously in the car before jumping out to go to his owner.*
