Children of North Kensington - pt 2, 1970s - Film 99569
Recreation and playgrounds for children in inner city London, England, in the 1970s - particular focus is on North Kensington and Notting Hill.
Parents have to work so children go to the playground. Children play at the Portobello Road. Two eight-year old girls walk 1 mile home along Portobello Road on their own, they walk passed a street market. Girls in their house - a slum, falling to bits, the Housing people sent someone around to see how long it will take for it to completely collaspe. Holes in plasterwork. Girls live on 4th floor so when it rains the water comes in. Graffiti Revolt now, tomorrow will be too late. Little boy crying. Children are wary of adults when they first come to the playground. Some know the staff at the playground better than they know their own parents. Girl draws picture of a posh man holding a wine glass. Very good drawing. Charcoal drawing. Child digs with pickaxe. Some children prefer to play alone. Adults and children discuss how to make things and what projects they could do. Boys climb ladder with plank and hammer. Hammering nails into wood. If children are naughty they have to leave the playground, but they are soon allowed back in. Play fighting with wooden guns. Two boys fight with boxing gloves. Two girls fight with boxing gloves on - one girl smiles a lot. Using a crowbar to jemmy up wood. Adults may think the play ground is an eyesore but to the children it is fun ansd a bit dangerous though there have been very few accidents. Children gain self confidence and learn new skills. Two black boys run home, they spend the day at the playground while their mother is at work. Mother asks where they have been. Black family eat - four children round the table, mother standing over them. She works full time but can only just afford to feed her children. Since she arrived in the UK her standard of living has fallen, but she hopes it will be better for her children. Four children play fight on their beds. Black children play pinball. Children can accomplish something at the playground, but will end up in factories or on the street. Two boys wrestle out of doors. Children with toy guns made of metal. Tilt up Trellick Tower covered in scaffolding from railway. The council could change things.

Human Experimentation: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
In the early days of the space race, agency researchers in Russia and at NASA really weren't sure all what would happen to an astronaut in space. They didn't know if a human mind could handle actually seeing Earth or what would happen to the human body when exposed to long periods of weightlessness. Would their blood forget which way to pump? Would their eyeballs shift or their inner ears wig out? They sent up mice and monkeys and dogs, to see what happened, and in 1961, the Russians strapped a man to a rocket headed for orbit. Yuri Gagarin was the first person in space. The ultimate human guinea pig, he survived, becoming an international hero.

Henry's Downfall - Jim Moray

A few words from Mr. Moray:
Henry's Downfall came courtesy of Coope Boyes and Simpson who recorded it on their CD 'Hindsight' in 1998. The song is more usually known as 'Van Diemens Land' and can be found on recordings by Shirley Collins, A.L. Lloyd and Walter Pardon and others under that name.
There is some info here - [informatik.uni-hamburg.de] - with slightly different lyrics but you should be able to piece it together.
I particularly liked the CB&S version because of the words
I was brought up in Warwickshire
In Southam town did dwell
My name it is young Henry,
in Harbourne known full well
Harbourne being an area of Birmingham where some of my friends lived when I was a student. Imagine those lines in a proper Brummie accent and its hard not to be taken with it.
The hurdy-gurdy tune that goes with it comes from another song that I wrote then discarded called We Poor Souls.
~Lyrics~
Come all you wild and wicked youths wherever you may be,
I pray you pay attention and listen unto me.
To the fate of our poor transports as you shall understand
And the hardships that they undergo upon Van Diemen's Land.
Now my parents reared me tenderly, good learning gave to me
Until with bad company I was beguiled which proved my destiny
And I was brought up in Warwickshire, in Southam town did dwell
And my name it is young Henry In Harbourne known full well
Young men, all now beware
Lest you are drawn into a snare
I and five more went out one night to Squire Dunhill's park
To see if we could get some game the night it proved too dark
But to our great misfortune we were [?] with speed
And sent away to Warwick jail which made our hearts to bleed
And at the March assizes to the bar we did repair
Like Job we stood with patience to hear our sentence there
Being caught with old offenders my case it did go hard
And my sentence was for fourteen years I was quickly sent on board
Young men, all now beware
Lest you are drawn into a snare
The ship that bore us from the land the Speedwell was her name,
For four five months and better boys we ploughed the raging main.
No land nor harbour did we see, believe me it's no lie,
Around us one black water, above us one blue sky.
And the very day we landed upon that fateful shore,
The planters they stood around us boys for forty score or more,
They ranked us up like horses and sold us out of hand,
and they roped us to the plough me boys to plough Van Diemen's Land.
Now young men, all now beware
Lest you are drawn into a snare
It's oft times when I sleep at night I have a pleasent dream
With my pretty girl I've roved abroad by field and sparkling stream
Yes in england I've been rambling with her at my right hand
but I wake up broken hearted upon Van Diemen's Land
Although the poor of England do labour and do toil
They're robbed of every blessing and produce of the soil
Your proud imperious landlords if you break their command
Well they'll send you off on British hulks to plough Van Diemen's Land
Young men, all now beware
Lest you are drawn into a snare
Young men, all now beware
Lest you are drawn into a snare

David Johnston
David Lloyd Johnston CC CMM COM CD FRSC(hon) FRCPSC(hon) (born June 28, 1941) is a Canadian academic, author, and statesman who is the current Governor General of Canada, the 28th since Canadian Confederation.
Johnston was born and raised in Ontario, studying there before enrolling at Harvard University and later Cambridge and Queen's universities. He went on to work as a professor at various post-secondary institutions in Canada, eventually serving administrative roles as dean of law at the University of Western Ontario, principal of McGill University, and president of the University of Waterloo. At the same time, Johnston involved himself with politics and public service, moderating political debates and chairing commissions in both the federal and provincial spheres, his most renowned position in that field being the chairmanship of the inquiry into the Airbus affair. He was in 2010 appointed as governor general by Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper, to replace Michaëlle Jean as viceroy. At the time, Johnston was predominantly praised as a worthy choice for the Queen's representative, though his appointment was denounced by some Quebec sovereigntists.

The Evolution of Males and Females - with Judith Mank
Judith Mank leads a tour of how sex is genetically programmed and how sex differences evolve.

Males and females in many species are often quite different from one another. The sex of an individual can have profound effects on how an organisms behaves, how it looks, how it lives and, in some cases, even how it dies. These differences are the product of different evolutionary forces acting on males and females, sometimes creating substantial conflicts between the sexes. In this talk, Judith Mank gives a quick tour of how sex is genetically programmed and how sex differences evolve.
Judith Mank is Professor in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London. She is interested in understanding how form, behaviour and reproductive patterns have evolved through selective pressures.
