The Beast Opening Day 2013/2014
Opening Day at Killington for the 2013/2014 season with Black Dog Sports.
Killington Bike Park: The Good Parts | Downhill’n Vermont Style
Welcome to Killington Bike Park. When not covered in snow, Killington Mountain has an impressive 30 miles of ridable terrain split between just under 30 trails. 3 Lifts bring riders to various peaks including the highest, K1, which provides roughly 3,000 vertical feet of downhill magic.
During our 2 day adventure in the park, my pal Ryan and I were able to squeeze in 25 runs for a total of 25,500 feet of vertical descent. We rode all of the classic trails, but started off on the easier ones to warm up and, even more so, teach myself how to ride park.
Step It Up and Jump Start are both tailor made for exactly this purpose. Trail features and difficultly gradually increase as you descend. This let’s newbies hone their skills and build confidence while veteran downhillers get a chance to warm up before moving on to the bigger stuff. I felt like superman flying through the air on these things, even if I was only a few inches from the ground.
So if you like to get airborne, Jump Start is a great trail for you. But if you prefer to stay grounded then please allow me to introduce you to Sideshow Bob. It’s exactly like the movie “Groundhogs Day”, but instead of an hour and 41 minutes of hilarious Bill Murray antics, you get 6 minutes of berms after berms after berms. To watch Sideshow Bob in all of its full length glory check the description below for a link to Ryan’s run.
Up until now we’ve only been riding blue trails, so what does a black diamond look like? Cable Trail and Snake Bite were two of my favorite descents and it should be easy to see why. Cable Trail follows an old lift line that has since been taken down, but old sections of infrastructure and cable are still visible throughout the ride. Unlike their blue counterparts, Snake Bite and Cable Trail have a lot of rocks and advanced technical features so be prepared to work. Snake bite has this awesome little bridge drop which took me a few runs to get work up the courage to hit.
But if those trails still seem too tame for you, then you’ll want to check out Scarecrow, Yo Vinny or any of the double black diamond trials. These runs are freaking nutty. I had to walk my bike in a few places for fear of smashing every bone in my body. Needless to say I was pushing my limits attempting these bad boys. I was really, really glad I rode a rented big hit bike rather than my pathetic 100mm travel all mountain rig.
So here we are, the last run of the day. Before we part, I think it’s worth mentioning again that there are a LOT more trails that we didn’t take a look at, including Black Magic which was a favorite among a few of the riders we talked to. If you’ve never gone down hilling on a big mountain before I highly recommend it. If cost is a factor you can do what I did and save a few dollars by bringing your own bike, just don’t case the concrete pad on “The Beast”, save that for the rental bikes.
So what do you think of Killington Bike Park? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks so much for watching. Now it’s your turn, get out there and ride!

Pico Peak, VT
My original plan, Mount Ellen, failed before I even got to the trailhead due to poor road conditions, so I turned around, drove to the Killington area and did Pico Peak (3,957') as a back-up hike.
