Germany: One Day in Freiburg
It's summer in Germany! Well, it is supposed to be at least. The weather this week wasn't really good and didn't really look like summer. It was cloudy and sometimes raining almost all day but we still went to out for a day trip. Freiburg is our first stop for this week full of day trips to cities nearby. Freiburg is a beautiful city in the south of Germany and in the middle of the Black Forest. A lot of things to see and do in and around the city. Have you been to Freiburg or do you want to go there? How did you like the city? Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany with a population of about 220,000. In the south-west of the country, it straddles the Dreisam river, at the foot of the Schlossberg. Historically, the city has acted as the hub of the Breisgau region on the western edge of the Black Forest in the Upper Rhine Plain. A famous old German university town, and archiepiscopal seat, Freiburg was incorporated in the early twelfth century and developed into a major commercial, intellectual, and ecclesiastical center of the upper Rhine region. The city is known for its medieval minster and Renaissance university, as well as for its high standard of living and advanced environmental practices. Because of its scenic beauty, relatively warm and sunny climate, and easy access to the Black Forest, Freiburg is a hub for regional tourism.

Places to see in ( Freiburg im Breisgau - Germany )
Places to see in ( Freiburg im Breisgau - Germany )
The city of Freiburg im Breisgau sits austerely on the edge of the Black Forest. Home to one of Germany’s oldest universities and a Gothic sandstone cathedral, it’s a hub for academics and medieval history buffs. Chug German suds at a local brewery, then hop a cable car up Schauinsland mountain, where astounding views and a solar observatory await.
Freiburg im Breisgau, a vibrant university city in southwest Germany’s Black Forest, is known for its temperate climate and reconstructed medieval old town, crisscrossed with picturesque little brooks (bächle). In the surrounding highlands, hiking destination Schlossberg hill is linked to Freiburg by a funicular. Featuring a dramatic 116m spire, the Gothic cathedral Freiburg Minster towers over the central square Münsterplatz.
Freiburg im Breisgau, or more commonly Freiburg is known as the Jewel of the Black Forest. By German standards it is a major city in southwest Germany, situated on the edge of the Black Forest. When ordering train tickets and similar items online, be careful not to confuse Freiburg (im Breisgau) with Freiburg (an der Elbe) or Fribourg in Switzerland.
Münster cathedral is Freiburg's biggest sight in the city, one of the oldest and most beautiful in all of Europe. The gargoyles are not to be missed; be sure to study every corner of the Münster. Make the effort to climb the stairs to the top of the tower for the fabulous views (Entry €1.50). Every day in the morning until 13:00 Mon-Fri and 13:30 Saturday, there is a market on the square surrounding the church. Visit on Saturday morning, as it then will be the biggest and nicest. Vendors are pleasant and sell local produce and goods. Recommended fare is a Bratwurst mit Brötchen (Bratwurst in a bun) or Currywurst for around €2.20. They're inexpensive, authentic, and make a delicious lunch or snack.
Bächle are small canals that line the streets of the inner city. These canals were once meant as a way to fight fires in medieval Freiburg. The locals say that if you accidentally fall or step into one, you will marry a Freiburg resident.
Schwabentor. One of two remaining old city gates.
Martinstor. The other old city gate, which is well known locally for the McDonald's next door which has placed its logo on the gate.
Altes Kaufhaus, located at the square surrounding the Münster.
Rathäuser. The historic and current city halls are about a five minute walk from the Münster.
Augustinermuseum The new Augustiner Museum houses a renowned art collection with works ranging from the Middle Ages up to the Baroque period, as well as paintings from the 19th century.
Naturmuseum und ethnologische Sammlung (Museum of Natural History)
Seepark. A man-made lake and a popular escape from the urban housing estate of Betzenhausen. Complete with beer garden and a restaurant, Seepark is popular with families and those planning a walk around the stunning green-belt area.
Botanic garden Open daily 8:00am-6:00pm, Greenhouse: Mon-Thurs: 12:00pm-4:00pm, Sun and holidays 2:00pm-4:00pm.

Walking in FREIBURG / Germany ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Freiburg im Breisgau is located in southwest Germany. With the Black Forest area around it has a reconstructed medieval old town and is also a vibrant university city.
We start the tour in the southern city centre at the Schwabentorbrücke. We head towards the Schwabentor which is a landmark city gate from the Middle Ages. Now on a summer evening in the old town people enjoy relaxing in many of the cities cafés and restaurants.
Near the Martin's Gate we go to several side streets and eventually the Rathausplatz, where the city hall is. We make it to the Freiburg Minster with a 116m spire, which is also impressive inside. This Gothic cathedral towers over the central square Münsterplatz and is one of the main attractions of the city.
We see more of Freiburg's lively streets streets and make it to the west side of the city centre with Freiburg Theatre and the modern design of the university library. Going further to the central station after seeing the Colombi Park the weather gets rainy.
We head back through the whole city and end the tour at the Schwabentor.

Black Forest Cake in Freiburg, Germany
I help an 8th grader with her homework, then I eat black forest cake.
I got an email from an 8th grader that has a project for an AVID class. The project was to interview someone, so I decided to help her out. Of course, in classic Brendan van Son style, I added her questions to the vlog.
Then, I did what adults do: I went and ate cake because I don't need an adult.
It dawned on me yesterday driving back from my shoot in the Black Forest that my favourite kind of cake, Black Forest Cake, must come from the Black Forest. It might have been obvious to most of you; but, hey, we all know I'm a little slow on the go some times.
So, after helping Jessica with her homework, I wandered down to Munsterplatz here in Freiburg, Germany to test out some of the dessert right from the origin of Black Forest Cake.
The verdict? It was delicious. Like, so good. It was the type of cake that might be a problem for me. I'm trying to eat healthy, but it's so hard when there are so many delicious things to eat here in Germany. German foods might be the death of me.
After devouring a proper German Black Forest cake, I wandered back to my apartment here in Freiburg to call it an early night. I have plans tomorrow to head out and look for some castles to photograph around sunrise. To get to them, I'll likely need to leave Freiburg at about 3am. So, it's going to be an early morning tomorrow.
Be sure to check back in for that travel vlog from here in Germany. I'll see you there.
Downtown Freiburg
A tour through the old town of Freiburg. You will see the pedestrian zone, the market hall, the Schwabentor, Martin's Gate, the cathedral, the market around the cathedral, the Colombischlößchen, the municipal theater and much more.

FREIBURG IM BREISGAU, GERMANY
We aren't having much luck with the weather today. It is really rainy here in Freiburg. It is Easter weekend but we are out an exploring and we want to show you the city. Let's go have a tour.
One of my first impressions of Freiburg is that it is such a great city to walk around in. That's all we've been doing so far. It's very picturesque. There are cobbled streets and it is also very historic.

Thankfully, the weather has shifted dramatically for the better. Earlier we had been rained out, so we had to head back into the hotel because it was cold and windy. Now we're seeing a few patches of blue skies, so we're going to keep exploring around Freiburg.

Freiburg (The Jewel of the Black Forest), Germany
Freiburg (The Jewel of the Black Forest), Germany
Freiburg is a is a beautiful, walkable German university city on the edge of the Black Forest. The university and its students keep it vibrant and cultural. The Altstadt (old town) is the best place to walk around with its historic buildings and relaxing squares. Go to the Freiburg Münster medieval cathedral and then Cathedral square in the morning to see the farmer’s market and eat a sausage from the stands there. Freiburg City Hall (Rathaus) have its own square and the pedestrian shopping streets are there too. The Martinstor, is one of the original city gates in Freiburg. Freiburg's Stühlinger Kirche or Sacred Heart Church, built in the style of the Limburg Cathedral, is behind the train station and a bridge ending at the church square in Stühlinger were and still are the connections to the city center. The bridge was originally named Stühlinger Bridge but is now named after the sister town Wiwilí in Nicaragua. It is also known as the Blue bridge, because of the blue paint coat.
Freiburg to Titisee - A Train Ride In The Black Forest!
A lovely train journey from Freiburg to Titisee during the Summer of 2016. A heavy gradient at times handled by a DB BR143 pulling our train through the Black Forest.
I played my arrangement of 'A Walk in the Black Forest' on the Yamaha Tyros 5 arranger keyboard for the background music...
