SOUTH DAKOTA BEAUTY! | Black Hills National Forest
In the autumn of 2018 my friends and I took a trip to Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota, USA. One of the best trips recently, and I grabbed some awesome footage and photography. It took until now for me to compile the three days, simply out of lack of time. Also lack of trying. But now it's here and I hope to do some more vlogs in the future; it's honestly a really fun video style to film.

Black Hills Camping.
2010RoadTripUSA. Part 40. Black Hills Camping. August 2010. Music by Umiliani.
The Black Hills are a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming. Set off from the main body of the Rocky Mountains, the region is something of a geological anomaly—accurately described as an island of trees in a sea of grass. The Black Hills encompass the Black Hills National Forest and are home to the tallest peaks of continental North America east of the Rockies.
The name Black Hills is a translation of the Lakota Pahá Sápa. The hills were so-called because of their dark appearance from a distance, as they were covered in trees.
Native Americans have a long history in the Black Hills. After conquering the Cheyenne in 1776, the Lakota took over the territory of the Black Hills, which became central to their culture. When European Americans discovered gold there in 1874, as a result of George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition, erstwhile miners swept into the area in a gold rush; the US government re-assigned the Lakota, against their wishes, to other reservations in western South Dakota. Unlike the rest of the Dakotas, the Black Hills were settled by European Americans primarily from population centers to the west and south of the region, as miners flocked there from earlier gold boom locations in Colorado and Montana. Black Hills, SD - Custer State Park - Needles Highway - With Friends
We stayed in the Black Hills of SD with some friends and also met some new ones. It was a great stay with many laughs and food. (Boy was their food.)
We of course took the drive on Needles Highway inside Custer State Park and I pull out the quad even though it was quite windy. One issue you will notice in some of this video, the sun was in the wrong spot. As such, bad lens and prop wash makes for distraction of this wonderful birds eye view.

Black Hills, South Dakota - Custer State Park - Full Tour (2019)
Custer State Park is a South Dakota State Park and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills, United States. The park is South Dakota's largest and first state park, named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The area originally started out as sixteen sections, but was later changed into one block of land because of the challenges of the terrain. The park began to grow rapidly in the 1920s and gained new land. During the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps built miles of roads, laid out parks and campgrounds, and built three dams that set up a future of water recreation at the park. In 1964 an additional 22,900 acres (93 km2) were added to the park. The park covers an area of over 71,000 acres (287 km2) of hilly terrain and is home to many wild animals.
The park is home to a famous herd of 1500 free roaming bison. Elk, coyotes, mule deer, white tailed deer, mountain goats, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, river otters, pronghorn, cougars, and feral burros also inhabit the park. The park is famous for its scenery, its scenic drives (Needles Highway and the wildlife loop), with views of the bison herd and prairie dog towns. This park is easily accessible by road from Rapid City. Other nearby attractions are Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Badlands National Park.
Various movies have been filmed in Custer State Park, including The Last Hunt (1956), How the West Was Won (1962) and A Man Called Horse (1970).
South Dakota Highway 87 (SD 87) is a 37.894-mile-long (60.984 km) state highway in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of South Dakota. It travels through the Black Hills region. The highway's southern terminus is at an intersection with U.S. Route 385 (US 385), about 6 miles (9.7 km) southeast of Pringle, within the southwestern part of Wind Cave National Park. Its northern terminus is at an intersection with US 16/US 385 about 3 miles (4.8 km) south-southwest of Hill City, within the east-central part of the Black Hills National Forest.
The highway travels through Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park. The northern 14 miles (23 km) of the highway is also known as the Needles Highway. The Needles Highway, along with the concurrency with US 16A, are also part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. Portions of the highway are also a section of Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop.
After splitting from US 16A, the route is known as the Needles Highway. This segment is 14 miles (23 km) long. Finished in 1922, the highway is named after the high granite needles it winds among. Access to the Needles Highway requires a Custer State Park entrance license, making that portion of SD 87 a toll road. Along this stretch lies the Black Hills Playhouse. The highway passes through two tunnels blasted through sheer granite walls—Iron Creek Tunnel and Needles Eye Tunnel. Owing to the narrow roadway, sharp turns, and low tunnels, the road has very little traffic. The vehicles that do travel this road are almost exclusively sightseers.
Just after Needles Eye Tunnel, Highway 87 serves as the northern terminus of SD 89. After this junction, SD 87 has one more tunnel, Hood Tunnel. It then provides access to the Sylvan Lake Resort. The route finally ends at US 16/385 south of Hill City.

RV TRIP TIP: Mt. Rushmore, Custer SP & the Black Hills of SD
While Mount Rushmore is the most well-known attraction in the Black Hills of South Dakota, there are lots of great things to see and do here. We just scratched the surface on this easy, one-day scenic drive.
Although Yellowstone National Park is probably the most famous place to see bison (buffalo), Custer State Park has one of the largest publicly-owned herds in the world, roaming freely throughout the park and often stopping traffic along the the road.
Connecting Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Iron Mountain Road is a work of art in itself. The highway passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills and includes three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. The road is famous for its Pigtail Bridges that allow travelers to gain or lose elevation quickly.
The Needles Highway is a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen and rugged granite mountains. Completed in 1922, the road's name comes from the needle-like granite formations you'll see along the way. It also has the longest, and coolest, tunnel!
Of course we visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial too, as no trip to the area would be complete without experiencing this amazing site up close. We hike the easy 6/10-mile Presidential Trail for stunning views almost directly beneath the granite faces.
This is only the beginning of the spectacular scenery in the Black Hills. For the more adventurous, be sure to visit Wind Cave National Park and Harney Peak if you have more time to spend in this beautiful part of the world.
We stayed in one of the many full-hook-up commercial RV parks in the area, but there are lots of State Park and National Forest campgrounds to choose from as well.
If you haven't yet visited the Black Hills, maybe this quick snapshot of the area will inspire you to add it to your must-see list. The admission price to the Custer State Park is well worth it!
