RACEHORSE DEATHS - 'A HAT FOR CHANGE' - ROYAL ASCOT 2016 - PART 1
Wildlife Presenter Anneka Svenska wears largest hat in Ascot history containing over 1000 roses to symbolise equine deaths from horse racing since 2007. Created by milliner to the stars Louis Mariette, the hat hopes to create a conversation to how welfare standards can be improved at British racecourses.
PART 2 CAN BE WATCHED HERE:
People often just blame the steeplechase races for horse fatalities, but surprisingly Ascot has had its fair share of deaths, it actually ranks as Britain’s most dangerous Flat (turf) venue. In 2014, four horses died unbeknown to flamboyant racegoers: Case Statement died from a broken lower leg; Inchila and Sir Graham Wade suffered a fractured pelvis; and Tiger Cliff collapsed and died after the race. Two horses then died in 2015: Stravagante
who was destroyed due to a fractured cannon-bone and King Edmund who fell and broke his neck.
Anneka and Louis decided to create this hat this year, accompanied by this film talking about why and how horse welfare standards can be improved. The horse racing industry is deeply embedded in the British Culture however there is so much room for improvements.
Anneka would like to:
• END NATIONAL HUNT RACING. The Grand National and Cheltenham festival races are two of the largest and most dangerous steeplechases which have seen 40 deaths in the last ten years. Cheltenham saw seven deaths this year and five at Aintree.
Did you know that approximately one in every 37 horses who starts a season’s racing will have perished by the end of it. They will have died as a result of a racecourse or training injury, or they will be killed after being judged to be no longer financially viable
• END TO THE WHIPPING OF HORSES which has been shown to be ineffective and can cause painful welts. The use of the whip urges the horse to go beyond what it is able to comfortably do, and can result in injuries and stress. Norway banned the whip in 1982 and there is no reason why the UK cannot follow their example. In 2014, there were 586 breaches of the British Horseracing Authority rules against excessive whip use. Racing Writer of the Year, Alan Lee, declared in The Times that Royal Ascot is ‘a stage on which jockeys have regularly been guilty of a win-at-all-costs attitude with the whip in the principal races’.
• THE SHORTENING OF COURSES. Many horses can suffer stress, strokes and collapse if the course is too long

Black walnut (Juglans nigra) - leaf scar - January 2018
This Black walnut tree can be found in the Hill Barton industrial estate of Exeter, UK.
===
Other common names
black walnut
American walnut
It is a large tree which can reach 30 or 40 metres in height. The tree gets its name from its dark, heavily ridged bark which occurs even when it is still young.
The leaves are pinnate and larger than that of the common walnut (Juglans regia) with more leaflets. Individual leaflets are oval, pointed, irregularly toothed and hairy underneath.
Both male and female flowers appear from late May-early June. The male flowers are on 8-10cm long catkins that droop from the branches. Female flowers appear in clusters.
During autumn, flowers turn to a brownish-green plum-like fruit. The brown nut is held inside this large semi-fleshy husk which is rougher than that of common walnut. The shells are notoriously hard to break, drying them out makes it easier to crush and open the shells.
Inside the twig the pith, or spongy tissue, is segmented. Buds have horseshoe shaped leaf scars, or marks, left by fallen leaves, at their base.
Black Walnut is native to eastern north America and was introduced to Europe in 1629.
The roots contain a growth-inhibiting chemical which prevents many other trees and plants growing near it, this is said to affect tomatoes and apples in particular.
In Britain it thrives best in warmer regions towards the south. It prefers fertile, lowland soil and needs plenty of light.
Squirrels and some birds feed off the nuts of the tree whilst the flesh is still green and the husk easier to penetrate.
Black walnut is mentioned in Native American creation myths.
Black walnut has been used by native people for thousands of years. Native American ethnobotany has revealed many medicinal uses for the bark, leaves, husks, and nuts of black walnut, including its utility as a mosquito repellant, a dermatological aid, an antidiarrhoeal, a laxative, and an anthelminthic. In one form or another, this species has been used to relieve the symptoms of fever, kidney ailments, gastrointestinal disturbances, ulcers, toothache, syphilis, and snake bite, among others.
Western science has shown that the fruit husks of the black walnut contain juglone - a compound that inhibits bacterial and fungal growth, and may be valuable in controlling dermal, mucosal and oral infections in humans. It is also being tested for its anticancer properties.
Timber from the black walnut is very attractive and very valuable. It is a strong and naturally durable wood, and the heartwood shows desirable mottled effects. It polishes to a high shine and is therefore used by craftsmen around the world for high-end furniture and ornaments.
The nuts can be eaten but they have a bitter taste if picked when the casing has hardened. It is better to extract the nut from the tree whilst the husk is still green and then dry the nut, to ensure it is not rubbery, before eating.
The seeds also give out a dark coloured dye which is still used in craft.
In Europe the tree is planted as an ornamental.
The young tree can be devastated by the grey squirrel. It also susceptible to walnut leaf blotch.
Black walnut has a strong taproot which makes the seedlings resilient, but difficult to transplant.
Black walnut nuts are shelled commercially in the United States. About 65% of the annual wild harvest comes from the U.S. state of Missouri, and the largest processing plant is operated by Hammons Products in Stockton, Missouri.
The nutmeats provide a robust, distinctive, natural flavor and crunch as a food ingredient. Popular uses include ice cream, bakery goods and confections. Consumers include black walnuts in traditional treats, such as cakes, cookies, fudge, and pies, during the fall holiday season.

Tony Benn's Tribute to Emily Davison by Reg Meuross live at Hope Hall Exeter - a #TwiggsGigs event
A song about two legendary social campaigners.from Reg Meuross' latest album Album England Green & England Grey, about the plaque Tony had placed in a broom cupboard in The House of Commons to commemorate the night Emily Davison spent there on the eve of the 1911 census, so she could give that as her address and further the rights of votes for women. 2 years later Emily died after flinging herself under the King's horse in the Epsom Derby regmeuross.com
In this broom cupboard Emily Wilding Davison hid herself, during the night of the 1911 census. She was a brave suffragette campaigning for votes for women at a time when parliament denied them that right. In this way she was able to record her address on the night of that census as being 'The House of Commons', thus making her claim to the same political rights as men. Emily Wilding Davison died in June 1913 from injuries sustained when she threw herself under the king's horse at The Derby to draw attention to the injustice suffered by women. By such means was democracy won for the people of Britain Tony Benn MP
TONY & EMILY
She slips through the doorway
Away from the crowds down the stairs - she steals through the night
Just a plain looking woman
Concealed in her coat and her cares - pursuing her right
In a tangle of corridors
Furtively turning the locks - the day growing dim
Footsteps in the distance
She hears the men coming her way - the last door gives in
There in the dark with the mops and the brooms
She opens her handkerchief makes herself room
A small piece of bread and a small piece of cheese
And a jar filled with water between her knees
By the light of a candle she reads a small book
And she waits – and she waits
On the third day of April
Nineteen eleven she woke - and she gave her address
‘These houses of commons
houses of men and now me’ - she smoothed down her dress
‘I’m not asking for favours
Just claiming what’s rightfully mine’ - she cried to the world
‘To rebel against tyrants
Is to show your allegiance to god’ - she cried as she fell
A hundred years later he slips down the stairs
And he senses her purpose he breathes in her air
He’s made her a sign which he nails to the door
He knows the equality Emily gave her life for
He lights a small candle to honour her name
And he waits – and he waits
