Black Kettle National Grasslands
Oklahoma Gardening host Kim Toscano talks with Brian Hajny, Wildlife Biologist for the US Forest Service, about the Shinnery Oak and prescribed burning research at Black Kettle National Grasslands.
Black Kettle Destination Outdoors
Black Kettle Wildlife Management Area covers 30,710 acres near the town of Cheyenne in Roger Mills County and is the largest WMA in the western half of the state. Located in the mixed grass prairie, grassland cover most of the area accompanied by rolling sand hills, red shale hills, and scattered woodlands. Certainly one of Oklahoma’s most popular hunting destinations, Black Kettle WMA had more deer harvested during the 2016-17 deer seasons than any other Department managed land besides Three Rivers WMA in southeast Oklahoma.
Black Kettle Grassland Campsite
National Grasslands are a great resource for free camping, just like the national forest. The same rules apply, this campsite has a 14-day limitation. Black Kettle is located about 10 miles north of Cheyenne, OK on Hwy 283. Cheyenne has local supplies, grocery, ice, fuel, and restaurants.
We are traveling, camping, and boondocking across America in a 2014 Ram Promaster camper van.
Our van is a custom built RV and is called “Tiny.”

SUMMARY
=======
McClellan Creek National Grassland is a National Grassland located in southern Gray County, Texas, United States. It was purchased with the goal of restoring badly eroded land to its natural state. The grassland is administered by the U.S. Forest Service together with Cibola National Forest and Black Kettle, Kiowa, and Rita Blanca National Grasslands, from common headquarters located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The grassland is part of the combined Black Kettle and McClellan Creek Ranger District with offices in Cheyenne, Oklahoma.
In February 2006, all of McClellan Creek National Grassland was burnt out in the 750,000-acre (300,000 ha) Interstate 40 fire. The majority of the trees were lost. The grassland's area is only 1,449 acres (586 ha). The grasslands surrounds McClellan Lake, a reservoir on the namesake McClellan Creek.
Washita Battlefield
The Washita Battlefield National Historic Site near Cheyenne is such a beautiful and peaceful place that it's hard to imagine the horrific scene that unfolded here on November 27, 1868. Its a story that everyone should know about, Oklahomans for sure but all Americans should know what happened here because it did change our way of life forever on the southern plains.

America's Grasslands
2001. This is the story of our National Grasslands. These wind swept seas of grass and wildflowers have witnessed the pageant of the frontier, the Dust Bowl, and their reclamation. Managed for sustainable multiple-use as part of the National Forest System, these lands total almost 4 million acres. The USDA Forest Service contributes to the conservation of grassland ecosystems while producing a variety of goods and services which, in turn, have helped to maintain rural economics and lifestyles.
