In November 2017, the Time + Tide Foundation together with partners at the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership, Fanamby, Ministère de l'Environnement, the University of Antsiranana, Zoos Victoria, and Time + Tide Miavana translocated 5 lemurs onto the protected island of Nosy Ankao. These lemurs were collared in September 2017, with the delightful addition of a baby born the day before translocation. All five have habituated to life on Nosy Ankao, where they are being monitored daily by our environmental team. The translocation is part of a multi-year Crowned Lemur conservation project with the community of Amparihirano on mainland Madagascar, through which the Time + Tide Foundation will ensure the short-term protection of family groups by safeguarding them on Nosy Ankao and long-term conservation by promoting tourism to Amparihirano. Wildlife tourism is the most viable future for the protected areas of Madagascar as long as residents feel the immediate economic advantages of conserving threatened species. Through this project, the T+T Foundation brings tangible social and monetary benefits to Amparihirano, while demonstrating to residents that showcasing endemic wildlife is more financially sustainable than poaching and habitat degradation.
Lemur Trekking with Time + Tide Miavana
Venture into the forested heart of Nosy Ankao in search of the island's resident crowned lemurs. While trekking through the maze of shady pathways, keep your eyes open for native birds, orchids, chameleons and geckos.
In October 2017, the crowned lemurs were translocated from an area of high poaching on the mainland to the safety of our island sanctuary. Since their arrival they have adjusted beautifully, even welcoming three new pups in 2018.
Come, let us show you the wonders awaiting you at Time + Tide Miavana...
A wildlife refuge, also called a wildlife sanctuary, is a naturally occurring sanctuary, such as an island, that provides protection for species from hunting, predation or competition, it is a protected area, a geographic territory within which wildlife is protected.
Such wildlife refuges are generally officially designated territories. They are created by government legislation, publicly or privately owned (the Chernobyl nuclear accident site has accidentally become a wildlife refuge). Refuges can preserve animals that are endangered.
