Whitby Goth Weekend: What's it Really All About? Friday and Saturday - The Main Event!
Win my undying love!
I'm sure you've seen the pictures on news sites and social media. You know, the ones of people dressed up to the nines in Victorian attire, standing in cobbled streets or with a backdrop of gravestones. But did you know that Whitby Goth Weekend is actually a music festival with a 22 year history?
The festival attracts music lovers and bands from all over the world to a tiny North Yorkshire town twice a year, where we revel in being able to be 100% ourselves, to catch up with friends we only otherwise see on Facebook, and to get well and truly hammered on snakebite and black.
As you'll see from this video, the main event is something really special. The Bizarre Bazaar features many amazing stalls selling everything from clothes and jewellery to cake and booze! In the evening, the huge stage at the Spa Pavilion is the main focus, with bands playing to an extremely appreciative crowd. :-)
The song I used in this vlog is 'Adrianne Dances' by Das Projekt, covered by Rhombus. :-)

Whitby
Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. Prior to local government reorganisations in the late 1960s, it was part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has an established maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Caedmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port developed during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was (along with the nearby fishing village of Staithes) where Captain Cook learned seamanship.

Shoppers flock to Barnsley's Christkindlmarkt
SHOPPERS came in their droves to see what was on offer at this year's Christkindlmarkt.
Festive crafts and German food were sold on 40 stalls around Queen Street, May Day Green and Cheapside over the weekend.
Thousands of visitors were entertained by four international Guggenmusik groups who performed their sets in colourful costume.
June Maw, 74, of Tennyson Road, Monk Bretton, said she went to the Christmas market every year.
I come for the atmosphere, she said.
It just gets better and better every year I think. I love Christmas markets and think it's really nice for the town.
I used to work on the twin town society for many years and have seen a lot of Germany. I think it's a lovely tradition.
Margaret O'Grady, 75, from Royston, visited the market with her family.
We have come every year since it started, she said.
My son lives in Norwich but he has come up especially. It's a good build up to Christmas. Barnsley has not got much for shopping so it's nice to have this market.
Stalls included jewellery crafted from cutlery, Whitby jet jewellery, Matryoshka dolls from Ukraine, Christmas trees and wreathes and other festive gifts.
There were various food stands selling cheese, home-made jams and chutneys and traditional smoked Bavarian sausage.
EGYPT: EARLY GRECO-ROMAN BURIAL GROUND DISCOVERED
English/Nat
Archaeologists have discovered an early Greco-Roman burial ground in western Egypt.
It's believed to contain at least 10-thousand mummies and archaeologists say it's the largest such find to date.
The mummies include some of the wealthy and powerful who lived two thousand years ago.
This section of Egypt's Western Desert has been renamed Valley of the Mummies.
It's here that archaeologists have discovered an early Greco-Roman burial ground believed to contain at least 10-thousand mummies.
The site is near Bahariya Oasis, 400 kilometres (250 miles) southwest of Cairo and was accidentally discovered after a donkey slipped into the tomb complex.
So far it's taken researchers four years to unearth more than 100 of the mummies, including some of the wealthy and powerful who were alive two thousand years ago.
Fifty mummies were found in each of four rooms, some of them were adorned with gold, others were covered with plaster or resting in pottery coffins.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's like a festival of mummies. We found until now, we excavated only four tombs, but we found on them 105 mummies, some of them covered with gold and beautiful scenes, others covered with linen and some mummies inside pottery coffins. The discovery is very important because it gives you an idea about daily life and also about the religious significance in the Roman period around 2000 years ago, because Bahariya Oasis was a very important centre at that time and therefore this is the only site with mummies in the world.
SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Zahi Hawass, Head of the Discovery Team
A trove of items dating back to the 4th century BC, including pottery, copper, jewelry and funeral accessories was also found.

Watch Man Attempt To Kidnap 4-Year-Old Girl Right In Front of Her Mom
Shocking video shows the moment police say a man attempts to snatch a little girl as her mother stands just a few feet away in a California cell phone store. In the startling surveillance footage shows the suspect's arm reaching in through the front door after a woman entered with her infant and 4-year-old daughter. According to police, the alleged kidnapper - identified as 24-year-old Hesperia man Terry Ransom - lost his grip on the girl as she struggled to get away outside the store.

Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is the world's largest funfair held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It is a 16-day festival running from late September to the first weekend in October with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. To the locals, it is often simply called Wiesn, after the colloquial name of the fairgrounds (Theresienwiese) themselves. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the original Munich event.
The Munich Oktoberfest originally took place during the sixteen days up to, and including, the first Sunday in October. In 1994, the schedule was modified in response to German reunification so that if the first Sunday in October falls on the 1st or 2nd, then the festival would go on until October 3 (German Unity Day). Thus, the festival is now 17 days when the first Sunday is October 2 and 18 days when it is October 1. In 2010, the festival lasted until the first Monday in October, to mark the anniversary of the event. The festival is held in an area named the Theresienwiese (field, or meadow, of Therese), often called Wiesn for short, located near Munich's center. Large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed, with almost 7 million litres served during the 16 day festival in 2007. Visitors may also enjoy a mixture of attractions, such as amusement rides, sidestalls and games, as well as a wide variety of traditional food such as Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezen (pretzel), Knödel (potato or bread dumplings), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Sauerkraut or Rotkohl/Blaukraut (red cabbage) along with such Bavarian delicacies as Obatzda (a spiced cheese-butter spread) and Weisswurst (a white sausage).

SUMMARY
=======
England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers five-eighths of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North Atlantic, and includes over 100 smaller islands, such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight.
The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, a Germanic tribe deriving its name from the Anglia peninsula, who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law – the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world – developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.England's terrain is chiefly low hills and plains, especially in central and southern England. However, there is upland and mountainous terrain in the north (for example, the Lake District and Pennines) and in the west (for example, Dartmoor and the Shropshire Hills). The capital is London, which has the largest metropolitan area in both the United Kingdom and the European Union. England's population of over 55 million comprises 84% of the population of the United Kingdom, largely concentrated around London, the South East, and conurbations in the Midlands, the North West, the North East, and Yorkshire, which each developed as major industrial regions during the 19th century. The Kingdom of England – which after 1535 included Wales – ceased being a separate sovereign state on 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union put into effect the terms agreed in the Treaty of Union the previous year, resulting in a political union with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, Great Britain was united with the Kingdom of Ireland (through another Act of Union) to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922 the Irish Free State seceded from the United Kingdom, leading to the latter being renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
