Black Mesa State Park
Black Mesa is located in Oklahoma's panhandle along the tri-state border with Colorado and New Mexico. The nature preserve consists of approximately 1,600 acres where visitors can hike and enjoy 23 rare plants and eight rare animal species. The unique area marks the point where the Rocky Mountains meet the shortgrass prairie and many species are at the easternmost or westernmost point of their natural range. In addition to being an excellent location for wildlife watching, Black Mesa State Park boasts some of the darkest nighttime skies on publicly accessible land in the country. The dark skies draw countless astronomy enthusiasts to the area every year as they make star gazing ideal.
Black Mesa State Park
On July 13, 2013 I took a road trip to Boise City and then on to the Black Mesa State Park. I had been there the same weekend after July the 4th of 2012 and the lake was almost completely dry. This spring there have been some good rains in the area and the runoff has put a lot of water into the lake. Being a state park, the lake is stocked with trout when the water level warrants it. It is a very scenic area more like New Mexico than Oklahoma. There is another area of interest at the Black Mesa summit, north of Kenton but I will save that for another video. Thanks for watching.

For a rewarding hiking or mountain biking experience, look no further than the Black Mesa Summit Trail. This trail will take you all the way to the top of Black Mesa, where you can stand at the highest point in Oklahoma - 4,973 feet above sea level. The trail will lead you to a granite monument that marks the Black Mesa summit and the highest point in the state. Take in the stunning view from the top, where you can see New Mexico and Colorado in the distance.
Black Mesa
Helicopter flyby of Black Mesa, OK in April 2017. At the 1:10 mark you can see a 8 foot tall marker just left of two cedar trees designating the highest point in Oklahoma of 4,973 feet. To the right of the two cedars you can see a well worn hiking trail leading up to the marker!

Oklahoma Panhandle - Where the Sante Fe Trail meets Dustbowl's Ground Zero
Photos from an extended weekend in late April, 2013. Based in Boise City, OK, photos include many from Black Mesa State Park and a few from around Clayton, NM. They reflect the landscape, both flat and not, Prong Horn (they are NOT antelope), cattle, vehicles from dustbowl days and even Dinosaur tracks. Some show the signatures and names of Sante Fe Trail travelers, others the simple beauty to be found in a cactus or some petrified wood. I hope you enjoy! Michael
