Kalkajaka - Place of Spears
Kalkajaka, the mysterious Black Mountain - This Place
To traditional owners, Kalkajaka is a sacred battle field of both spirits and warring clan groups.
To tourists, Black Mountain is the eerie and striking landform along the Trevathan Range many feel compelled to stop at on their drive to Cooktown in far north Queensland.
The mass of massive, granite boulders towers over the landscape; black and barren, in stark contrast to the scrubby green savannah below.
Black Mountain is a place of mystery and legend to Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, dubbed the 'Bermuda Triangle' of far north Queensland due to stories dating back to the late 1800s of disappeared people, horses and whole mobs of cattle.

Dark Figure Moving in Background at Kalkajaka Black Mountain Australia
All credit goes to the Science Channel's show What on Earth? Season 4, Episode 16 Nazi Stonehenge for this interesting footage used at 30:01 and again at 33:17.
Part of this episode is about Queensland Australia's mysterious Kalkajaka (Black Mountain), known for its rumors of strange events and documented disappearances. Indigenous beliefs hold it to be a taboo location and tribal elders urge both locals and visitors to stay away from it.
A dark colored figure can be seen moving through a eucalyptus forest clearing in the background in the upper right side of the screen, as two light colored birds suddenly fly up out of the trees in the middle of the screen, moving in the opposite direction.
Indigenous inhabitants avoid the area.

For me it's a sacred site and no-one is allowed to go to that area, if they do they will get very, very sick.

Cultural history of Black Mountain National Park:
The National Park's Black Mountains are a heavily significant feature of the Kuku Nyungkal people's cultural landscape known locally to Aboriginal Australians as Kalkajaka (trans: place of spear).
Queensland's Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been advised of at least four sites of particular mythological significance within the Black Mountains as follows:[5]
There are at least four sites of religious or mythological significance on the mountain. These are the Kambi, a large rock with a cave where flying-foxes are found; Julbanu, a big grey kangaroo-shaped rock looking toward Cooktown; Birmba, a stone facing toward Helenvale where sulphur-crested cockatoos are seen; and a taboo place called Yirrmbal near the foot of the range.
The Black Mountain also features strongly in local, more non-Aboriginal cultural landscapes, some of which has also been described by Queensland's Department of Environment and Resource Management as follows:[5]
When European colonists arrived late last century, they added to the many Aboriginal legends of the area with a few of their own. Stories abound of people, horses and whole mobs of cattle disappearing into the labyrinth of rocks, never to be seen again
It is believed that those who vanished most probably fell into one of the chasms under the rocks or after entering one of these places became lost. It is estimated only three in ten would survive such falls, wandering below the Earth's surface with only ground water streams and insects to nourish them. This minority group are referred to by tourists as Outback Moles (perhaps in reference to New York's underground population)
The national park's distinctive hard granite boulders and range originally formed out of magma that first slowly solidified under the Earth's crust about 250 million years ago

Lion Den Hotel Far North Queensland between Black Rock and the Daintree National Park.wmv
The very popular Lion Den Hotel is between Black Rock (just south of Cooktown) and the Daintree National Park. Many Cape York camervan travellers use this route.
The site is also home to a number of powered van sites plus some freedom bush camping areas plus a few dongers. Something to suit most people.
