Russia: Five-year-old rescued black bear finds new home

Five-year-old Mikola the bear is a lucky survivor after being rescued from dreadful conditions in the Kemerovo region, as footage filmed earlier this month shows.
Mikola the black bear was a star of the travelling circus until it was kicked out for unfitness for work. Yurii Maslov took the animal to save its life but due to personal circumstances, the new owner found he was not able to keep the animal anymore.
The bear lived in an extremely small and oftentimes uncleaned cage. Maslov, who works in the neighbouring village, has come rarely to feed the animal. Locals were alarmed as the hungry and furious animal could easily harm someone.
Once the bear even tried to escape and scared all who was around. It was seen walking freely in the village. A couple of days after the incident Mikola the bear was found unable to move in its cage. Locals even claimed that Maslov gave some psychotropics to the animal and left him to die alone. The owner denies everything.
The bear has all the fur in the mud, all in faeces. Unsanitary conditions here do not meet the requirements of veterinary medicine, in my opinion. Valery Fedorov, head of the Department for the protection of wildlife of the Kemerovo region said.
Department for the protection of wildlife of the Kemerovo region employees and local authorities took the situation under control. Mikola the bear was transferred to Tanai Wildlife Park for a further rehabilitation just three days after its story appeared.
Everyone found out about sorrowful conditions of this bear's keeping it was decided that we took the bear with us, veterinarian Alexey Bukatin said.
The Department for the protection of wildlife of the Kemerovo region initiated the probe into Mikola the bear case.

Eerie drone footage: Russia’s ‘Plague Fort’ where scientists battled death
The history of Russia’s “Plague Fort” is colder and darker than the ice flows surrounding it in the murky waters of Saint Petersburg’s Neva Bay.
Also known as Fort Alexander I, it was originally built to defend the bay from foreign foes, however, the only action the fortification saw was the battle against the plague within its own walls.
Following the discovery of the plague pathogen Yersinia pestis in the late 1890s, named after the man who discovered it, Alexandre Yersin, the Russian government set up the “Special Commission for the Prevention and Cure of the Plague in Russia” at the fort.
After its reconstruction in 1899, the structure was fitted with heating, a lift for transporting lab animals and an incinerator for cremating them. Rabbits, guinea pigs, monkeys and horses were infected with the plague in the hope of extracting their blood serum to develop a vaccine. Despite strict hygiene control measures, there were two outbreaks of plague at the lab, one in 1904 and another in 1907, which resulted in two deaths and the fort’s grisly nickname.
By the end of 1917, most of the research assets were transferred to various research institutes around the country and the laboratory stopped functioning. Ownership of the fort was transferred to the Russian Navy, which used it as a storage facility. Since then the building has played host to rave parties in the 90s, two TV shows in the early 2000s and anyone brave enough to visit Russia’s infamous “Plague Fort” these days can take a boat excursion to the site.
