Black Sandy Beach, Langkawi, Malaysia II Black Sand II Beauty of Langkawi
Black Sand Beach Langkawi, located four kilometres southwest of Tanjung Rhu Beach, offers memorable photo opportunities and a peaceful retreat from the island’s often crowded areas. A 20-minute drive from the Langkawi Cable Car, it’s a popular hangout spot among locals, especially during weekends and public holidays. Despite its name, the beach is actually a mix of black and white sand, which some locals believe to be the result of a centuries-old curse laid by a mermaid because a fisherman had stolen her ring. Others claim that it’s soil from the rice paddy fields that were burned by farmers back in 1821.

3: Pantai Cenang Beach
Tanjung Rhu - northernmost tip of the island. Centuries-old limestone caves, mangroves, waterways, limestone crags and sandy beaches make it a nature lover's paradise. This beach is made up of 2 long stretches that include Tanjong Rhu Resort and Four Seasons.
Black Sand Beach (Pantai Pasir Hitam). The sand is mixed in white and black shades, due to rich tin and iron ore deposits. Tour buses stop here; souvenirs, restaurants, toilets available. During low tide you can explore the beach further west and find very tranquil spots for relaxing., toilets, mangrove tours and sun chairs available.
Pantai Cenang - The most popular beach in Langkawi, features fine powdery sand and many beachfront restaurants and bars. Located at the south-western tip of the island, 2 km long. This is also the busiest beach on island with jet-skis, banaboats etc. watersports. Along the beach there is market where you can find all type of shops (free duty, tour, bars etc)& restaurants. Unfortunately jellyfish are common here.

Beautiful Black Sand Beach Langkawi, Malaysia
It isn’t difficult to figure out how the beach earned its name – the sand really is black. The sand is actually a mix of black sand and normal sand but up to this day, scientists are still unable to figure out the truth behind the existence of the black sand.
While scientists remain baffled about the black sand on the beach, the locals have believed for centuries that the black sand’s origins are related to a mythical giant half-man half-eagle called a Garuda. The legend starts with the Garuda kidnapping a Chinese princess with a romantic intention in mind but the princess‘s heart has long belonged to her beloved fiance, a Roman prince. A battle soon broke out between the prince and the Garuda with the eagle seeking refuge in its homeland of the Langkawi Island. With the prince determined to defeat the Garuda, the war extended to the island and the black sand seen today are believed to be the remnants of the war. As the end to the story, the prince was reunited with his princess while the Garuda disappeared and was never seen again.

Pantai Pasir Hitam
Is the sand at this beach really black? Yes, well almost :). The sand is not exactly pitch black, it appears as if some kind of black dust has been mixed with the normal sand. In the earlier years, the sand looked more blackish than what it looks now. Black Sand Beach is locally known as Pantai Pasir Hitam. In Malay, Pantai means beach, pasir is sand and hitam stands for black, and therefore such name.
There are many stories that explain why the sand is black here. A popular mythological legend says that Garuda, a giant eagle picked up the Princess of China to seek some favors. However her fiancé, a Roman prince lodged a war against Garuda to get the princess released. It is said that the beach reflects the remains of the fierce war and therefore looks black. I have also heard some say that iron oxide in the sand causing the black pigmentation, and some wrongly think that washed up black particles from the nearby cement factory is probably causing this. But what is the real cause for the sand of Black Sand Beach turning black?
So why is the sand black?
Unlike some of the other island beaches where you can see black sands, this is not a case of volcanic eruption. In fact the real reason for the sand to be black here is given on the information boards at the beach itself. There exists huge amount of minerals called Tourmaline and Ilmenite in the granites of Gunung Raya (i.e. Mount Raya). These minerals are run down by the spring water from the mountain and cause the color of sand to turn black.

But this phenomena seems to be an exception in Langkawi. It has been observed by the scientists that these minerals rarely cause sand to turn black elsewhere in the world. In fact Ilmenite is the basic mineral used for producing Titanium Dioxide which is ground into powder form to create a highly white substance. It is used as the base in a number of products including in paint and paper. So why is it causing the sand to turn black here? There is no definite answer really. Do you know that Ilmenite has also been found in the moon?

Black Sand Beach Langkawi
Unlike other black-sand beaches, this sand isn't volcanic in nature but rather is streaked black by run-off from a nearby hot spring.

Langkawi's Best Beaches: Island Tour
Langkawi, Malaysia has several completely different (but equally enticing) beaches within a short scooter ride of the main beach in Pentai Cenang. You can even drive around the entire island in a few hours (but you should take all day) if you feel like it.
We spent a day driving around the island and another day enjoying our favorite beach (spoiler: it's Pentai Pasir Tengkorak), but explore and discover your own.
Pantai Pasir Tengkorak: Perfect white sand, warm shallow water, and shady trees. Bring your own snacks since there are few amenities here.
Tanjung Rhu Beach: Amazing beach walk and exploration at low tide. There's some signs for dangerous currents, so avoid at high tide. A few nice beach bars and vendors for food and drinks (good but a little pricey).
Eagle Square comes highly recommended by Google searches...but we weren't impressed. Skip it. Use that time on the beach!
Pantai Cenang: Great place to stay with loads of food and fun, including watersports, parasailing, jet skis, and more. End your day here with the sunset and bean bags on the beach bars by the bonfires!
