Our ACCOMMODATION & TRANSPORT : NZ South Island Road Trip Aug 2015 HD
Sharing our means of Accommodation and Transportation throughout our Road Trip Holiday in the South Island of New Zealand (9 - 17th August 2015)
After juggling with several different options on logistics arrangement (initially choosing the standard rent-a-car/motel route), we finally decided to go with the option of travel and accommodation via a camper van.
A vacation on a camper van proved to be a unique and exciting experience, it in and of itself being quite the adventure for us. Here are some reasons why:
- It was a long vehicle (6.9m in length) - driving it was like driving a bus : so we had to be extra super careful on our turning radius, and adjacent vehicles.
- We were practically driving our home - so whenever we needed a short power nap or a toilet break, we could just pull over and go back =)
- Driving your home adds another thrill to the experience: while driving you will be initially terrified by the sounds of plates, pans and glasses shaking and ground rattling, the sound of your house as if it was experiencing an Earthquake. You'll always look at the back mirror to make sure everything's okay, but you'll get used to it after a while.
- There was no back mirror for driving - the backmirror oversees the bedroom behind! So you'll have to rely completely on the side mirrors - it takes a while to get used to.
- We could always re-plan our accommodation and choose our overnight camping locations on the fly, since we were not restricted to any motel/accommodation reservations (provided of course it was a legal holiday park/freedom camping site - thankfully these days there are lots of online references and mobile apps, in addition to local information guides to help us give the exact locations for our planning) - for us, going in off-peak winter season means very high chances of vacancies in camping grounds.
- Depending on how you manage your camping/accommodation, camper vans can becomes a very economical option (compared to the car rental/motel option), since you're technically renting transportation and accommodation in one go - ours during off-peak winter season cost $79 per day (excluding insurance) - but there are cheaper, smaller options available. Couple this with the bonus of the flexibility of camping convenience - makes it definitely a worthwhile consideration.
- Bicycles! - it was one of the best ad-hoc decisions we made to hire bicycles attached to the camper van; whenever we'd see a beautiful harbor/lake and wanted to take some pictures which would take ages on foot, or perhaps when we wanted to do grocery shopping without facing the headache of driving a big vehicle in a crowded shopping mall parking lot - whop out the bicycle and go!
- our particular model was front-wheel drive only ; this being a heavy vehicle, this meant that, driving on mud/grass is DEFINITELY not a good idea! So driving at night gives the additional challenge and thrill of ensuring your tires don't end up in mud, and managing the momentum so that the van keeps moving.
- Utilities management - for cars, besides minor utilities like wiper fluid, coolant, battery water, engine oil, you'd mainly have to worry about your Fuel, on a daily basis. For a camper van, on a daily basis, you'll have to worry about managing Fuel, LPG gas bottles (for overnight heating/cooking during freedom camping), fresh water, effluent grey water (from our showers/sinks), effluent black water (from the toilets), and house battery supply. A shortfall in any of these utilities could mean some serious difficulty whilst camping overnight!
These are some of the many aspects which made it a unique and memorable trip for us. At times exciting, at times terrifying, all the way awesome - this was one for the books, walhamdulillah - All Praise and Thanks to Allah.

Air New Zealand Crazy About Rugby Campervan Convoy Arrives for Game Day at Carisbrook
Rippa Rugby is the new game of rugby for primary school children where, instead of tackling the other team, you rip the flag from the belt of the opponent. It's loads of fun for the little guys and they're just as crazy about rugby as we are! So we thought, why not let them have the campervans and meet up with All Blacks.
Two of Christchurch's Little Rippa Rugby teams, Burnside and New Brighton, were chosen to go on the Air New Zealand Crazy About Rugby campervan trip, meet the All Blacks and go to the All Black's Charity Match at Carisbrook. These little guys were so excited about their free New Zealand campervan hire.
The Air New Zealand staff still had a few more surprises up their sleeves yet. They had Crazy About Rugby jerseys and tickets to the All Blacks vs Fiji game for the Little Rippas and their families. Before heading off to the game, the little guys showed us their talents on the field, ate a few sausages at the Burnside Rugby Club and, most importantly, met a few of the All Blacks! Man they're big.
The following week the Air New Zealand Campervan journey began, departing Christchurch and heading down the coast to Dunedin in the rental campervans.
Along the way they saw some sheep (after all, it wouldn't be New Zealand without footage of sheep now would it?) and stopped off for morning tea at the Moeraki Boulders, which are pretty much the size of the kids. But none of that would even come close to what was about to happen once they arrived in Dunedin. The Little Rippas got to attend the All Blacks Captains Run training session the day before the big game at Carisbrook! There were rugby balls for everyone and Subway to go around too.
If that wasn't enough excitement, the next day was just as jammed packed with Tourism Dunedin having organised a day of fun-filled activities including heading to the Royal Albatross Colony, Cadbury World and New Zealand's most well-known landmark and only castle - Larnach Castle. Providing panoramic views as far reaching as Dunedin City and Otago Peninsula, this castle is something well worth visiting if you're travelling around New Zealand in a motorhome. It's also known for its magnificent architecture and history.
Then they headed to Carisbrook where the kids got to strut their stuff and play the pre-match before the All Blacks vs Fiji charity game kick off!
