Black Tusk Gallery Whistler Features James McCue Woodland artist
James McCue (1972, Richmond, BC, Canada) is a Woodland artist living and working in the Semiahmoo Bay area of British Columbia. His work reflects the natural wonder of BC and is inspired by growing up on BC’s Sunshine Coast, the Kootenays and Whistler. These places and especially their wildlife, continue to have a great influence on his work.
James McCue Fine Arts is dedicated to the universal advancement of Woodland Art and its concept of color therapy. McCue, who worked under Woodland master and originator Norval Morrisseau, says, “We would talk and agree that the art form [Woodland] was evolving, that it was becoming something even larger than its beginnings as a native art form. It’s growing into something universal, something transcendent and at the same time reflective of what it is to be human.”
“Norval was passionate about this,” McCue continues, “and about the concept of color therapy. Universal themes, universal language, universal learning, and maybe most importantly, universal understanding and healing.”
McCue Fine Arts shares the belief that art is meant to inspire, to educate, and to open us to new possibilities… and through these new possibilities, art is also meant to heal. Art inspires thought. From thought flows understanding. When we come to new understandings, we are open to heal. This is the role of color therapy. This is the evolution of Woodland Art.
“McCue’s art blend powerful colors and imagery. It’s an amalgamation of human culture and primal force, a melting pot that connect to an ancient place within each of us.”

Black Tusk Gallery Whistler Features Christopher Smith Glass Artist
Artist statement - Christopher Smith on Glass Salmon
About Glass Salmon.
The economic, cultural and spiritual importance of Salmon to the Northwest Coast is reflected in the iconic manner and recognizable image of these fish. In pre-contact society, the abundance of this source of sustenance to the First Peoples was a divine gift from the Creator, harvested and used with great respect for it's origin. The image of spawning salmon, fighting through great cataracts and rapids, providing themselves to the bears, eagles, wolves and later in their death after a successful spawn, providing nutrients to the roots of the great giant fir, spruce and cedar of the coastal rain forest, is a powerful one.
The settler culture soon found great wealth in the abundance of fish and plentiful timber. Communities sprung up, up and down the coast, to capitalize on these resources. In fact the modern economy of the Northwest Coast is built on fish and timber.
It is the spiritual aspect of the Salmon that give me inspiration. Each individual fish, one of millions, has that aura of immortality, of a life given with a purpose, sustaining and enriching the other lives it contacts. Truly a gift from God
I make the Glass Salmon, not to reproduce the fish but to create a likeness in glass that is 'glass with Salmon appearing'. Each Glass Salmon is an individual, one of a kind. I do seriously try to make each fish a recognizable species and sex, with appropriate colouration. But I make them as glassy as possible and each individual has a personality and spirit.

Coast Mountains Backcountry Report - April 16 2015
The CMBR team was in the Spearhead Mountains on Thursday, with the increasing temperatures now and into the weekend, we are on the verge of a major change in hazard levels.
Wednesday presented no problems with temperature at elevations above 2000m on any aspect as afternoon cloud kept solar heating in check; however, by 1100hrs yesterday, temps reached 3C at 2350m and snow surfaces started pin-wheeling with wheels to 70cm across. Even snow on true north shaded aspects began to moisten on top.
We got SP results at 2330m N. asp down 30-32 at CTE(4) on SH (6mm), a layer buried 150411. No sign of the 150411cr at this elevation and asp. (1200hrs)
We got SP results at 2330m N. asp down 74cm on a density change with facets (1mm) at the same elevation. The block slid off on a 35 degree slope under its own weight. This is the same layer that resulted in the Sz2 remote triggered slab on 150414 on the upper Spearhead Glacier.
We bailed on the Spearhead and headed back onto southern aspects. Snow isothermal on steeper south facing slopes over 150411cr at 1220 from 15-30cm deep. No loose wet until 1400hrs on these asp. 7C at 1900m at that 1400hrs.
In the afternoon, we traversed the Chuting Gallery at 1950m and found isothermal to 150411cr with that crust beginning to break down. At 1500hrs we started to see Sz1.0 loose wet avalanches on northern asp in the Corral at 1900m running long.
We counted approximately 75 tourers in the Northern Spearhead around noon yesterday. In my opinion, a SPAW for this region is justified.
This will be the last CMBR of the season, thanks for watching and have a great summer. See you when the snow is flying again in Nov.

Christian Morrisseau Talks About Family and Woodland Art
Christian Morrisseau Talks About Family and Woodland Art
Brian Marion - Forever Thunderbird
Brian Marion was born October 6, 1960 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan growing up amongst the Saulteaux and Cree of the Prairies and the Ojibway of the Northern Woodland of Ontario. In 1975 Brian began a nine-year apprenticeship with Norval Morrisseau, the internationally renowned Canadian Native Artist and founder of the Woodland School of Art. In reference to Mr. Marion, the great artist has said, During those years of training, Brian learned both the spiritualism of the Ojibway culture and the technique of Shaman art. As an artist he has learned to apply colour to forms that were derived, in part, from ancient pictographs still found in the central region of Canada. While he developed his artistic talents, he was taught to use the meanings of the legends as a basis for composition in his painting. He has acquired the knowledge from the visions of our people and has come to understand our close ties with nature. He is able to get inspiration from his native spirituality and with the blessing of the Creator, add his own emotional and intuitive interpretations to produce beautiful art. Brian Marion's many achievements include a show with Norval Morrisseau at First Canadian Place, a mural commissioned by the African National Congress Mandela Free Leonard Peltier next?' and a mural Rainbow World for the Young People's Theatre. Other accomplishments include his artwork featured in a music video with Robby Robertson, John Tridell and Buffy Ste. Marie, three books published by Prentice Hall/Ginn Publishing, and a poster commissioned by IKEA Canada. In 1994 Brian was chosen to represent Canada at the 50th Anniversary D-Day Celebrations in Normandy, France. His work has been shown in Milan and at the Canadian embassy in Chicago, promoting aboriginal art as part of Canadian trade missions to these countries. His work is featured in many private and corporate collections around the world including that of the Prime Minister of Canada.
