Townsville Floods 2019 Continued - Black Weir, Framara Park & Riverway
Townsville Floods 2019 Continued. This was filmed a couple of days after my first video and the morning after the worst night of the flood. On top of that, the dam gates were opened to 100% at 8pm which lead to a huge amount of water heading downstream and inundating many areas. Worst hit were suburbs like Idalia, Oonoomba, Rosslea, Hermit Park. I can't get to those locations but if you complete a search, you will find lots of videos on YouTube and Facebook.

Townsville Floods 2019 video taken at Ross River Dam, Black Weir and Framara Park with comparisons to photos and videos taken before the flood. We are into day 3 of the one in 100 year flood for Townsville. A monsoon trough has appeared over Townsville and has no intention of leaving for the next couple of days at least. The power and force of Mother Nature and incredible and to be respected. Many thanks to the hundreds of emergency service personnel who are out there away from their families helping to protect others.

Black Weir, formerly Black School Weir, is the most upstream weir of those on Ross River. Built in the early 1930s, Black Weir is a hollow buttress weir with an ogee shaped face on the downstream side, a sloped face on the upstream face and stone pitched abutments. The weir's name is derived from the name of Black School which abutted Ross River near the location of weir when it was constructed. Following damage to the weir due to flooding, the weir underwent major renovations in 1934. These renovations included the addition of a second pump well, the addition of further buttresses and the underpinning of the original structure. It took until 1936 to fill the reservoir behind the weir, but only provided a few years water supply. During World War II the large influxes of population as a result of Townsville's heavy military presence necessitated the provision of more water. In 1940 a galvanized iron wall was erected atop Black Weir to provide additional storage capacity to supplement the town's water supply. This continued for many years in order to provide additional water which could be pumped from the weir

Australia weather: unprecedented flooding, Townsville warned as floodgates open.
Thousands of residents in and around the #Australian city of #Townsville have been warned of unprecedented #flooding after dam gates were fully opened on Sunday as monsoon rains continued.
Rain in the state of Queensland, where Townsville is located, has swollen the Ross River dam beyond its capacity.
Officials earlier warned that up to 20,000 homes could be flooded.
Cars and livestock have already been swept away around the coastal city in the north-eastern state.
On Sunday, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology warned of risk to life and property as the dam gates serving the Ross River were opened to their full setting.
Conditions will change rapidly and continuously. Stay informed, look for updates and follow advice of emergency services, the bureau said.
It added that the dam would release up to 1,900 cubic metres of water a second, a dangerously high amount.
Townsville has received more than a metre of rain in just a week, which is more than 20 times the average for the time of year - beating the previous record set in 1998, in what became known as the Night of Noah.
Thousands of residents in the area have already been affected, some left without power and others cut off by flooded roads.
Images and footage shared on social media show people wading through waist-high water in the streets.
Josh Bavas, a reporter with ABC News, posted a video showing floodwater pouring through a shopping centre car park.
The army has been helping to protect homes with sandbags, while rescue teams have been evacuating people using rafts.
Northern Queensland has a tropical climate and experiences monsoon rain from December to April. But the current conditions in the Townsville area are rare.
Meanwhile, parts of southern Australia are in the grip of a severe drought.
January was the hottest month on record for Australia as a whole, with the southern city of Adelaide breaking its own records twice in the month, first reaching 47.7C and then 49.5C.
The heat has caused bushfires and a rise in hospital admissions.
Several wildlife species have also suffered, with reports of mass deaths of wild horses, native bats and fish in drought-affected areas.
