Blacks and Whites' Carnival, Pasto, Colombia (Carnaval Negros y Blancos) - the warm-up days
Fact is that we came to Pasto because Skippy decided to stop the trip and Pasto is the last big city before the border. Then we heard of the upcoming carnaval and thought it would be a great opportunity to enjoy some nice moments in the end of our common trip. Blacks and Whites' Carnival (Spanish: Carnaval de Negros y Blancos), is the largest carnival celebration in southern Colombia, its geographical indication belongs to the city of Pasto. It is celebrated from 2 to 7 January of each year and attracts a considerable number of Colombian and foreign tourists.
In 30 September 2009, this Carnival was proclaimed by UNESCO, as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Source: Wikipedia

Que viva Pasto Carajo! Estuve en el Carnaval de Blancos y Negros la, fiesta más grande del Sur de Colombia. Se celebra en Pasto, mi ciudad natal, y desde mi infancia, el 6 de enero ha sido mi día favorito.
I was in the biggest carnival in southern Colombia. It is celebrated in Pasto, my hometown, and since my childhood, January 6 has been my favorite day. It's The Day of the Great Parade, el Día del Desfile Magno and the Day of the Whites, y el día de Los Blancos.

Description: Arising out of native Andean and Hispanic traditions, the Carnaval de negros y blancos (Black and White Carnival) in San Juan de Pasto in south-western Colombia is a great celebration lasting from 28 December to 6 January each year. The celebrations begin on the 28th with the Carnival of Water − the throwing of water in homes and on the streets to initiate a festive mood. On New Years Eve, the Old Years parade takes place, with marchers carrying satirical figures representing celebrities and current events, and culminating in a ritual burning of the passing year. The main days of the carnival are the last two, when people of all ethnicities don black cosmetics on the first day, then white talcum on the next to symbolize equality and integrate all citizens through a celebration of ethnic and cultural difference. The Black and White Carnival is a period of intense communion, when private homes become collective workshops for the display and transmission of carnival arts and a wide range of people come together to express their views of life. The festival is especially important as the expression of a mutual desire for a future of tolerance and respect.
