Blackbushe Market
The Hampshire - Surrey border.
The Sunday Market and the neighbouring Airport on the morning of Sunday the 31st March 2013.
It was a cold and breezy day with brief periods of sunshine.
The final Market opening day was Sunday, the 3rd of May, 2015
.
British Car Auctions (BCA), which had owned the land and the Market since 1984, confirmed on Tuesday the 5th of May 2015 that the market would no longer take place due to a decline in trade.
Rumours of the market's imminent closure had been circulating via social media since January 2015. However, BCA had vehemently denied that there was any truth in them.
At the time, BCA even began making regular announcements over the market's PA, refuting rumours that it would close, which continued into the last few weeks.
Despite this, traders were told that the market had been cancelled with immediate effect on Tuesday morning,
Blackbushe Airport (IATA: BBS, ICAO: EGLK), in the civil parish of Yateley in the north-east corner of the county of Hampshire, England. It comprises an airfield - much reduced in size since its hey day, a British Car Auctions site, a kart track owned by Camberley Kart Club, and a small business park.
Blackbushe Sunday Market is held on the car auction site.
Blackbushe Aerodrome has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P693) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction, as authorised by the licensee (Blackbushe Airport Limited). The aerodrome is licensed for night use.
Royal Air Force
The airport started life in 1942 as RAF Hartford Bridge, and it was used by RAF squadrons throughout the remainder of Second World War for reconnaissance, defence and strike operations using Spitfires and Mosquitoes. It was also the home of the Free French Squadron (Lorraine).
A number of important people landed at the airport including:
King George VI
Queen Elizabeth
Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower
Field Marshal Montgomery
The RAF Station was closed on 15 November 1946.

Pilots share flights with day trippers
(10 Sep 2019) LEAD IN:
While private aviation was once the reserve of the super wealthy, more opportunities to cut costs by flight sharing are now emerging.
'Wingly' is an online platform which enables private pilots to reduce the costs of their flights by splitting them with passengers, who in turn get to experience a day trip on a light aircraft.
STORY-LINE:
Paul Denbigh started learning to fly small Piper Arrow aircraft like this one in 2009 and got his Private Pilot Licence (PPL) a year later in 2010.
He's since achieved around 450 hours of flying and it's become a fun hobby which he enjoys sharing with his wife and two children.
But today his passengers are complete strangers who have signed up to 'Wingly' - an online platform which connects local private pilots with people, who then split the costs of the flight in order to experience a light aircraft flight and a daytrip. It claims to be the biggest flight sharing community available and is often described as a 'car pool for the skies'.
I obviously love flying, but it is an expensive hobby, explains Denbigh.
What Wingly allows me to do is to share the experience with people that love… you know outgoing people. So what happens is it cuts the cost pretty much into a quarter for me and I get to fly more, that's what I love about it.
Today's flight will take off from Blackbushe Airport in Camberley in the UK. It will land at Bembridge in the Isle of White around midday and the pilot and passengers will get to spend an afternoon there before returning around 5pm.
Denbigh had to hire the plane for today's trip and the cost per passenger comes to 63 British pounds each. The cost is worked out based on an hourly hire cost (which includes fuel), landing fees at the destination airfield plus a cut for Wingly.
Denbigh will not make any money from today's flight and will pay an equal share of the cost:
For me it's not a commercial venture, I'm not a commercial pilot so I'm not allowed to make money from this. The idea is that it uses technology to bring the experience of light aircraft flight to the masses really.
Today's Wingly passengers are a young couple: Tom Martin and Mehram Sumray-Roots. After an introduction and safety briefing with Denbigh they put on headphones (which drown out the noisy engine and allow them to listen in to air traffic control) and belt up for a short 25 minute flight to the Isle of Wight.
Shortly after landing at Bembridge Airport Martin says:
It certainly beats the car and a ferry. And it's quick, only took half an hour if that.
The pair stop for lunch and get to spend a few hours on the beach before flying back to the mainland. Speaking of her experience Sumray-Roots says:
It was a lot smoother than I thought, luckily we've got good weather today, so it was quite nice that way. It was bumpy at parts, when we saw the other plane I thought 'that's really small and we're flying in that!'. But besides that it's been really good fun and it's been a really nice area to come over, especially that end bit when we came over the sea, it was very pretty.
Paris based Wingly has 15,000 private pilots on its website offering flights flights to and from thousands of European cities.
Once signed up the pilot contacts the passengers directly to confirm details - and will also directly reschedule alternative dates if the weather isn't good enough to fly.
However he says there are many variables which can make such products difficult to operate and maintain as well as survive commercially.

SPEED AND SAFETY
Stirling Moss was at Blackbushe to see a British Dragsters team competing against the Americans. Dragsters sprint cars, costing up to 8,000 pounds, are designed to reach 200 miles an hour in just a quarter of a mile. ® The faster you go, the harder it is to stop. That was just one of the tests being carried out at the Road Research Laboratories, Crowthorne in Berkshire, to make driving safer. They deal with everything from the lay out and the surface of the road itself to the design of the vehicles which use it.

Blackbushe Air Day - In support of Aerobility
Blackbushe Air Day - In support of Arability
On Saturday 30th July, Blackbushe Airport opened it's gates to both the public and fly-ins for the first Blackbushe Air Day.
We couldn't have predicted such an amazing turn out - which may have left us short of a bus or two!
A wonderful mix of pilots, av geeks, families and local business joined us to support both Blackbushe Airport and Aerobility.
We have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback received and hope to bring on a bigger and better event next year - it is the Airports 75th Birthday after all!
So the question on everybody's minds - how much did we raise?!
Drum roll please...
£15,000!
What an incredible result for a first year event.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in planning, delivering and fundraising for Blackbushe Air Day, including The Big Pull teams and each of our amazing volunteers - without you the air day would not have been possible.

A man in a suit walks along the street in city of London. He pauses at a junction waiting to cross the road. He is next seen disembarking from a bus along with other passengers at London Airport. The sign at the bus stop says Hunting-Clan departures. Passengers walk across the tarmac to the waiting Hunting-Clan plane and are greeted by an air hostess as they climb the rear stairs of the aircraft. The plane taxis to the runway and is next seen in flight.
