-----------------------
Blackheath stretches across the very top of south east London.
It is governed and shared between both the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Lewisham.
It's a very large conservation area of green open space with a village in its centre. It's located east of the town of Lewisham, and south of the town of Greenwich and is 7 miles from Charing Cross.
Many people believe Blackheath was used as a mass burial ground for the victims of the 14th century pandemic 'Black Death' which wiped out about half the european population. However, the word 'Blackheath' just means the colour of the soil on the heath which was dark which seems more plausible.
For the last 34 years, Blackheath accommodates thousands of runners as the start of the London Marathon. It holds either a funfair or circus across most bank holiday periods and it also hosts a fireworks display for Guy Fawkes every year.
The area has a train station serving Charing Cross directly and several buses passing through the area.

West Midlands UK Shopping, 1960s - Film 97944
Coventry and Birmingham, West Midlands shopping.
Daytime views of Coventry Cathedral, a close-up of the Bull-Ring Centre sign with detail of bull image, a round office building stands behind. Scenes of outdoor covered market stalls with shoppers at various stalls - buying fruit and pillows. A merry-go-round turns in the background. A busy city centre street in the shopping district shows a Morris Traveller car, (the driver uses a hand signal to pass a stationary bus picking up passengers at a bus stop) and a Volkswagen Beetle. The lorry-driver of previous scenes is shown with his wife and children going shopping in a small town (good shot of Ford Anglia car and Hillman Imp parked at roadside) they walk past shops, Lloyds bank, fruit shop, butchers, electrical goods shop and chemists.

Blackheath Scenes, 1940s - Film 43715
Amateur Home Movie shot in rural England and Blackheath in South East London, UK.
A country house or farm surrounded by fields. A river winding through reeds. A panning shot of a couple of rural houses surrounded by trees. Grassy fields gentle sloping down to a curving river with trees in the near distance. A calm part of the river with a small island in the centre full of trees, a swan glides by preening itself. Closer shot of the swan by the grassy bank. A water mill with the wheel attached the building and the mill pond. Another stretch of the small river running by a house, a couple of white geese are waddling around nearby. A few children sit on a narrow wooden bridge spanning the river with their feet hanging over the sides. Panning shot of roads on both sides of the river and domestic buildings nearby. Many villagers gathered on and around the bridge and banks of the river.
Panning shot of a park with a couple of flowerbeds and deck chairs [Greenwich Park?]. People walking through the park. The Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London. The Observatory Dome with a statue of General James Wolfe on the left. A distant view of the buildings of the Royal Observatory.
A boat in full sail travelling down the Thames, an industrial chimney can be seen on the opposite bank. Elevated views of London, probably from Blackheath in South East London. Panning shot of the Georgian and Victorian villas that surround the grassy hill of Blackheath near Greenwich. A pond surrounded by people standing nearby and paddling, the steeple of All Saints church can be seen in the distance behind. A brief panning shot of large Georgian houses on the heath and the roads that criss - cross the plain. All Saints church.

A for sale sign in a hedge and a parked Mini in view. A blue Volvo estate car comes into view and the camera follows this car along the road. Open village green with park benches. The same car going the other direction. Children on the green. Surrounding buildings. Again we see the same car driving more slowly. Other traffic. Volvo moving toward camera before indicating and taking left turn. Stationary cars and pedestrians. Car comes into view up a hill and driver can be seen behind the steering wheel. Car goes down hill and up hill again.

Smethwick council buying vacant homes to prevent more coloured people moving in on Marshall Street
Video 2 of 3
In 1964 Peter Griffiths, Conservative candidate in Smethwick constituency won his seat using the slogan If you want a nigger for a neighbour VOTE LABOR
The general election was won by Labour, overturning 13 years of Conservative government. In contrast, largely because of the race issue, a Labour majority of 3,544 was turned into a Tory majority of 1,774, defeating the senior Labour MP Patrick Gordon in Smethwick.
The nigger for a neighbour slogan was attributed to the Griffiths campaign in a BBC interview by Labour leader Harold Wilson. Griffiths denied using those words, but said that they accurately reflected the frustrations of locals.
Immediately after the election Wilson (as prime minister) attacked Griffiths in the House of Commons, calling him the parliamentary leper.
Additionally the Tories had also taken control of the local council, instituting a policy on Marshall Street of buying houses which came up for sale and putting them back on the market for sale to whites only. In an attempt to better-integrated immigrants.
Soon after, Americas Malcolm X visited Marshall Street and was interviewed, saying:
I have come here because I am disturbed by reports that coloured people in Smethwick are being badly treated. I have heard they are being treated as the Jews under Hitler. I would not wait for the fascist element in Smethwick to erect gas ovens.
Malcolm X was shot dead in Harlem days after his return from this trip.
Later that year in October a bomb exploded at the home of Smethwick's new Conservative MP Peter Griffiths, causing extensive damage.
