Blacksod Bay (Irish: Cuan an Fhóid Duibh) is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean in Erris, North County Mayo, Ireland. The 16 km (9.9 mi) long and 8 km (5.0 mi) bay is bounded on its western side by the Mullet Peninsula. Its eastern side includes Kiltane Parish which extends southwards from Belmullet towards Gweesalia and Doohoma.
In June 1944, Supreme Allied commander Dwight Eisenhower made the decision to go ahead with the D-Day landings based on a detailed weather report from Blacksod Bay. Despite the official position of Irish neutrality, providing meteorological data on the Atlantic Ocean was just one of many things Ireland did to assist the Allies during the Second World War.

Blacksod Bay Emigration - Re-enactment walk
“Ionad Deirbhile, Information & Heritage Centre, Eachléim, Blacksod, are marking the “Assisted Emigration from Blacksod Bay” of the 1880s with a Family Fun Day & Re-enactment walk from Belmullet to Blacksod following the route the emigrants from Achill, Newport, Belmullet & Erris regions would have taken to the ships. Special guests include; Atlantic Rhythm, Achill Pipe Band, Dr. Gerard Moran NUIM & a Craft Circle from throughout Mayo. A free bus will be provided on the day. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. Atlantic Rhythm will be dressed in period clothing and everybody is welcome to join them in doing so. The Assisted Emigration was a scheme by which people in the most deprived areas of Ireland were helped to emigrate to the U.S. and Canada in search of a better life. Known as “The Tuke Fund” it was named after James Hack Tuke, a Quaker who for over 60 years sought to address starvation and deprivation in the West of Ireland.”
Deirbhle’s Twist – Ireland’s Stonehenge near Blacksod Pier (Mayo County)
Did you know that Ireland has it’s own version of Stonehenge? :) It’s called Deirbhile’s Twist and it is in County Mayo. It is a part of North Mayo's sculpture trail near the Blacksod pier.
Anyway, unlike the Stonehenge, Deirbhile’s Twist has no history. It is just a circle made from local granite stones in a spiral twist with 22 stepping stones.
Deirbhile’s Twist is the last part of the sculpture trail through North Mayo. It was made by Artist Michael Boffin sculptor.
