C3West: Blacktown Native Institution Corroboree, November 2015
On Saturday 7 November, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) collaborated with Blacktown Arts Centre and UrbanGrowth NSW to host a community Corroboree on one of Australia’s most important historical sites – the Blacktown Native Institution – and unveiled a series of site-responsive artworks
This third and last collaborative on-site event was the culmination of a year-long project, building upon the two Blacktown Native Institution Artist Camps which took place in June 2014 and March 2015. Over two days of culture, healing and sharing, these events offered an iterative and interlinked series of discussions, art-making workshops and storytelling sessions.
Artists Darren Bell, Karla Dickens, Steven Russell, Kristine Stewart, and Leanne Tobin came together with the community, local artists, academics and historians towards three intended outcomes: the creation of a website as a keeping place for personal stories about the site (unveiled in March this year, the bniproject.com website went on to win “Best Indigenous Project or Keeping Place” at the 2015 Australian Museums and Galleries National Awards), creative direction for future permanent usage of the site, and the creation of new temporary public artworks which were unveiled at the Corroboree.
The local community participated in free family activities, including storytelling, live music, traditional food and a BBQ, children’s workshops, a beautiful ‘tear catcher ceremony’ by Leanne Tobin, as well as performances by pioneering hip-hop artist Brothablack, who previously worked with the Blacktown Arts Centre through the Urban Theatre Projects collaboration Back Home (Sydney Festival 2006 and Canadian Tour 2007), Blues & Roots singer Krista Pav and Band, who has developed language research through the Blacktown Arts Centre Performing Arts Program, plus storytelling around the campfire with much-loved elder and storyteller Uncle Wes Marne.

C3West: Blacktown Native Institution Artist Camp #2 Highlights
The Blacktown Native Institution Artist Camp #2 was held on the weekend of 21 – 22 March 2015. The Blacktown Native Institution was a residential school for Aboriginal and Maori children that operated from 1823 – 29, and is one of Australia’s most important historical sites. The Artist Camps brought together community, artists, and experts to develop a vision for the future of the site, share and collect stories, and create new artworks. Watch this video to see activities and artworks that were created during the second Artist Camp.
The Blacktown Native Institution Corroboree will be held 5-9pm Saturday 7 November on the site – all welcome. More information at bniproject.com.

Blacktown Faiva
Ma'ulu'ulu
Sydney Sonata Singers sing Leron-leron Sinta at the Blacktown Arts Centr.
Leron leron Sinta is the first mother-goose song that a Filipino toddler learns to sing. It tells of the different vegies/crops that abound around the backyard. In the third stanza a boy asks a girl for her love claiming he is a brave man, that he owns seven swords and nine rifles (7 balisong and 9 armalites in the vernacular) and that he is not afraid to cross the dining table to face his formidable foe -- a big plate of noodles. The song was treated to a 3-level vocal arrangement and conducted by Loy Tagudin, the SSS choirmaster/conductor and was performed live at the Blacktown Arst Centre, Sydney Australia in the Blacktown council sponsored Music of the World celebration in June, 2013.

Blacktown Animal Holding Facility
Blacktown City Council acts as a holding facility or pound for a number of Councils across Sydney. The facility provides a service for stray, lost, or unwanted animals to be reunited with their owners, or where possible, to find new homes. We strongly encourage everyone who is thinking of getting a pet to contact us first rather than going to a pet shop. There are so many animals just waiting for someone to love them at the AHF. Desexing your pet is something we also encourage.

Book launch Emmanuel Attard biography Mark Caruana and Barry York Blacktown Sydney 10 March 1995
Launch of book, 'Emmanuel Attard: from Gozo (Malta) to Gallipoli and Australia' (by Mark Caruana and Barry York) at La Valette Social Centre in Blacktown, Sydney, on 10 March 1995.
Emmanuel Attard was born in Qala, Gozo, Malta, in 1898 and was one of more than 200 Maltese men who came to Australia in 1916 on the French mailboat, 'Gange'. The men were declared prohibited immigrants and not allowed to disembark in Australia; though later admitted after many weeks stranded at the ship's destination, New Caledonia.
Featuring Maltese folk music (ghana) and speeches. The Maltese musicians are Ronnie Borg, Charlie Bonello, Frank Saliba and Joe Bonello.
There is 22 minutes of folk music from the 20:15 mark.
Emmanuel Attard recites a poem in Maltese at 01:12:30. (His adult children, Monica and Brian are in the audience, along with Brian's wife, Josie).
Also features Frank Zammit, Mark Caruana, Mark Cranfield and Barry York.
Many other faces from the Maltese community of that period can be seen in the footage.
I was given the videotape of the event in 1995 and recently digitized it for preservation purposes and to share via youtube in the interests of enhancing an understanding of Maltese cultural life and history in Australia.

The mosaic seat in the new clinical services building at Blacktown Hospital is one of our centerpiece art projects. Created in collaboration with 500 local community members, staff and child care centre kids, it extends the length of our main foyer, called Hospital Street. The community's original designs were created in a series of workshops. Artist Malcolm Cooke then rendered the designs into mosaic, hand-cutting more than 100,00 tiles to create the stunning mosaic. The mosaic was installed by Malcolm, with fellow artist Terry Cook, over several weeks in early 2016. The work was inspired by the sky, and Van Gogh's Starry Night, after a member of our Aboriginal Advisory Group, Lynette Mieni, mentioned that “we look down to the ground but we don’t often look up to the sky”. Part of our BMDH Arts & Culture Program, coordinated by the Health and Arts Research Centre Inc (HARC).
